Two Extremes to Avoid

By Michael Sove

As the saying goes, “There is a ditch on either side of the road.”  When it comes to spiritual gifts and the cell church there are two extremes to avoid.  On one side of the road is the ditch of silence and under-usage of gifts.  I have been in settings where spiritual gifts were not taught about or even mentioned.  People were not given the opportunity to discover and use their gifts.

Paul said, “Now about spiritual gifts, brothers, I do not want you to be ignorant.”  (1 Cor 12:1)  A few verses later he says, “Now to each one the manifestation of the Spirit is given for the common good.”  (1 Cor 12:7)  I think that it is very important to have in your discipleship or training track some basic teaching about spiritual gifts.  Even more important than that, is having a way to help people discover and release those gifts both in the Celebration side of things (large group) as well as the cell side of things (small group).  As we said previously the cell is a wonderful setting for people to discover and use their gifts.

The ditch on the other side of the road is what I call abuse or over-usage of gifts.  In one of my church plants I had a guy who claimed to have the gift of words of knowledge.  Although I believe in that gift, and saw the power of it at work on many occasions, in my opinion, as time went on, he began to abuse the gift and its usage.  He didn’t want to be accountable in the use of this gift.  He would approach almost every person who walked into celebration or cell and give them a word from God.  I had this sense that he was using it to try to impress or manipulate people.  My concerns proved to be true when I had to relieve him from leadership for moral failure with another man’s wife.  Paul reminds us, “If I have the gift of prophecy and can fathom all mysteries and all knowledge…but have not love, I am nothing.”  (1 Cor 13:2)

Let’s release the people to be all God intended them to be as His Body.  Watch out for those two extremes of under-usage or over-usage of gifts.  Teaching and accountability are so important and will help you and those you lead to avoid the ditches on either side of the road.
