We are frequently asked whether we use children to lead cells. The answer is no. We ask those who lead our children’s cells to be at least 16 years old. We made this rule because of the high expectations we have for our children’s cell leaders. It might seem paradoxical, but our training for children’s cell leaders is more extensive than the training for our adult cell leaders.
Besides the cell basics, we add additional courses for our children’s cell leaders. We instruct them on how to teach others (pedagogy), the mistreatment of children, and child abuse. Most of our children’s cells are led by adults, and we believe their ministry to children are a key factor in counteracting the growing phenomenon of youth gangs ravaging our country.
The common profile of children and youth who enter the gangs is that they come from famililes who have disintegrated. Becuase they have never experienced a sense of belonging, which comes from a close-knit family, these wayward children join the gangs for love, affection, and a sense of belonging. Cells for children provide youth and children the sense of belonging they are looking for, and we believe in this way, we are preventing the gang activity from spreading.
Today, in the mother church in San Salvador, we have approximately 27,000 children in our children’s cells each week. Our goal is to reach 100,000. This would be 10% of the population in the capital, and in this way we would have an even greater impact on the society.

Células infantiles frente a la violencia juvenil.

Una pregunta que me hacen comúnmente es si los lderes de nuestra células infantiles son también niños. La respuesta es no. La edad mnima para ser un lder de célula infantil es de 16 años. Eso es as debido a las expectativas que tenemos de esos lderes. Aunque parezca paradójico, el entrenamiento para ser lder de célula infantil es más extenso que el que usamos para ser lder de una célula de adultos.
Además de aprender los fundamentos del trabajo celular, el lder de células infantiles también debe aprender elementos adicionales para trabajar con niños. Entre esos elementos se encuentran la pedagoga y temas como el maltrato y el abuso infantil.
Buena parte de los lderes de células infantiles son adultos y, en la actualidad, este es un elemento importantsimo frente al fenómeno de la pandillas juveniles que vive el pas. El perfil de los niños y jóvenes que ingresan a pandillas normalmente incluye la desintegración de sus familias. Sintiéndose vacos de lazos familiares buscan en la pandilla la pertenencia y el afecto. Las células infantiles salen al paso de tal situación abriendo los brazos para otorgar a estos niños y jóvenes la atención y el cariño que necesitan. De esa manera, se realiza un trabajo de prevención de la violencia.
En la actualidad, atendemos a un aproximado de 27,000 niños en nuestras células pero la meta es poder llegar a los 100,000. Eso sera el 10% de la población en la capital y con ello estaramos impactando de manera más amplia a la sociedad.
