Team Encouragement

Discouragement is one of the biggest problems that leaders confront. Dr. John Stott in his book “The challenges of Christian leadership,” shows us that the two biggest challenges of leadership are discouragement and physical weakness. Dr. Joel Comiskey, in his book, “How to be a Great Cell Group Coach,” dedicates chapter 3 to teach coaches how encourage their leaders.

I believe God wants us to raise up teams of leaders who know how to encourage others. When leaders minister out of discouragement, at least five negative things happen: mistaken prayers (Numbers 11 : 14-15, 1 kings 19:4), mistaken words (Numbers 21: 4-5), mistaken thoughts (Matthew 11:2-3), mistaken vision (Numbers 13:25-33), mistaken actions (Numbers 20:7-11), and they end up in the wrong, mistaken places (Jonah in a fish, Abraham in Egypt, Peter in front of the fire of Christ’ s enemies).

Encouragement must begin in the leadership meetings. That’s why the Apostle Paul traveled to the churches he started to encourage them (Acts 14:22). Paul did this many time as we see in Acts 15:36, “Let us go back and visit the brothers in all the towns where we preached the word of the Lord and see how they are doing”.

In the Old Testament there is a Hebrew word “Kahah,” that means “loose encouragement.” In Isaiah 61:3 the phrase “spirit of affliction” is used for Kahah. This word is very much related to darkness. And we all know we must fight against darkness to win souls because the god of this world has blinded the minds of unbelievers , so that they cannot see the light of the Gospel shine upon them.(2 Corinthians 4:4). When we fight the evil one, it’s easy to get discouraged and to wear down. This is another reason why we need constant encouragement.

What does encouragement mean? In Philippians 2:19, the word encouragement appears as the Greek word ‘eupsujeo’ which means to be in good spirits, or to have a good attitude . And this is the principal purpose of encouragement: to instill or recover a good attitude.

A good attitude results in a willing leadership spirit. Peter had this in mind when he said, “Be shepherds of God’s flock that is under your care, serving as overseers-not because you must, but because you are willing, as God wants you to be; not greedy for money, but eager to serve” (1 Peter 5:2). The word “encourage” in Spanish means to give life, expression, communicate cheer and enthusiasm, movement , warmth, vigor ,etc. The Holy Spirit must produce this encouragement so it’s the leader’s job to reunite the team with the encouragement of the Holy Spirit, allowing encouragement to overflow to the team.

El equipo es un antdoto contra el desánimo

El desánimo es uno de los problemas mas grandes que enfrentan los lderes. El Dr. John Stott en su libro “los desafos del liderazgo cristiano”, muestra que los dos grandes desafos del liderazgo es el desánimo de los lderes y la fragilidad del cuerpo. También el Dr. Joel Comiskey, dedica todo el capitulo 3 de su libro “Como ser un excelente asesor de grupos celulares”, a “animar” y enseña cosas como se debe empezar las reuniones animando. Esto nos lleva a afirmarnos en la necesidad de un equipo de lderes que genere, a través del poder de Dios, mucho ánimo y mucha fortaleza.

Cuando los lderes trabajan en desánimo, la escritura nos muestra que caen en cinco cosas: hacen oraciones equivocadas (Números 11:14-15; 1Reyes 19:4), tienen palabras equivocadas (Números 21:4-5), pensamientos equivocados (Mateo 11:2-3), visión equivocada (Números 13:25-33), acciones equivocadas (Números 20:7-11), y se acaba en lugares equivocados (Jonás en el pez, Abraham en Egipto, Pedro frente al fuego de los enemigos de Cristo).

Las reuniones de equipos de lderes deben proveer principalmente de ánimo. Es por eso que el Apóstol Pablo recorra las Iglesia para confirmar los ánimos de los discpulos (Hechos 14:22). Y esto lo haca repetidas veces, como dice en “Hechos 15:36 Después de algunos das, Pablo dijo a Bernabé: Volvamos a visitar a los hermanos en todas las ciudades en que hemos anunciado la palabra del Señor, para ver cómo están”.

En el Antiguo testamento hay una palabra hebrea que es la palabra “kahah”, que significa “perder el ánimo” (Isaas 61:3, “Espritu angustiado”). Esta palabra está muy relacionada con la oscuridad. Y todos sabemos que ganar almas es una lucha contra las tinieblas, porque el dios de este siglo cegó el entendimiento de los incrédulos, para que no les resplandezca la luz del evangelio (2 Corintios 4:4), y esa lucha contra las tinieblas desgasta el ánimo, por lo que requiere ser renovado constantemente.

¿Qué significa animar? En Filipenses 2:19, la palabra ánimo, aparece como la palabra griega “eupsujéo” que significa “estar de buen espritu”, es decir, de buena actitud. Y ese es el propósito principal de infundir animo, recobrar la buena actitud. Porque el liderazgo debe realizarse con buena actitud, voluntariamente, como dice “1Pedro 5:2 Apacentad la grey de Dios que está entre vosotros, cuidando de ella, no por fuerza, sino voluntariamente; no por ganancia deshonesta, sino con ánimo pronto”. Por otro lado, la palabra “animar” en castellano, significa: dar vida o expresión, comunicar aliento y entusiasmo, dar movimiento, calor, fiesta, infundir vigor a un ser viviente, etc. Y como esto es una tarea exclusiva del Espritu Santo, la responsabilidad del lder es reunir al equipo para que ese ánimo del Espritu Santo, aflore y se manifieste en todos.
