Retreat Illusions

The main danger of any type of retreat is the thinking that the retreat will bring instant sanctification. The reality is that there are no shortcuts or alternative ways to a holy life. The only way is the daily application of the Word of God under the anointing of the Holy Spirit. When the Word reaches the heart of the Christian, it produces the discipline of self-denial, the passion to pick-up Christ’s cross daily, and the desire to follow Jesus every day.

This road is not a “nice” or “easy” one. But there is no alternative. Human beings have a preference to go the easy way and to avoid death to self. And if a retreat is presented as a way to acquire holiness in a 1,2,3 quick step solution, people will be inclined to go for it because it’s an easy way out. Thus, you take the risk of neglecting the path of renunciation to replace it for an automatic sanctification event.

That deviation from the path of self-denial becomes a danger to a devout life of holiness and it develops unrealistic expectations on people. Those expectations can cause disappointment and frustration when the promised blessings are not received.

No doubt, retreats have their benefits. But they must not be elevated to a level of expectations that exceed the biblical framework. Retreats are spaces dedicated to a special devotion to God. That close relationship with God facilitates understanding His will, and in that environment new resolutions are made. But then, inevitably one will have to travel the road to the cross. There are no shortcuts.

  • Hello Pastor,
This is a very good observation.
In our country, there has been a movement that emphasized too much on the retreat and forgot the essentials for daily living.
Your view on retreat is very refreshing.
    Keep on writing. 🙂
