Everything Through Cells

One great hindrance to a denominational or independent cell-based church is the myriad of “other” ministry opportunities that come along. Whether offered by the denominational leadership (maybe even required) or presented by an attendee of the congregation, every good idea must be qualified by a simple criteria; does it advance the body by and through the cell ministry?

The enormous pressure accompanying a potential new program is felt in undeclared expectations for loyalty to the denominational program structure, or from the well-meaning person indicating that if you do not accept their ministry idea, attendance and support will be withdrawn. Do not become a hostage!!

Both of the above situations, and the myriad of others that will arise over the years, must be screened by whether or not they function within and support the cell structure. If they do not, “NO” is the best answer, every time. They will drain resources, people and finances, while diluting your energies for accomplishing the vision God has given.

Recently talking with Jorge Pena, pastor of Iglesia Restauracion Elim, in Reseda, California, a church of 300 cells, he told me that everything they do is accomplished THROUGH the cells. The cells are the church. As you read this blog, the youth of his congregation are preparing for their annual retreat, taken over the American Thanksgiving holiday weekend. Everyone attending must be registered through a cell group and there will be over 600 young people at this event!!

How are you accomplishing “Everything Through Cells”? Give me some feedback!

  • Very interesting, Jeff. I would say that where I am, we are not accomplishing everything through cells. I belong to a denominational church and a cell within that church (I would call my growth group a cell). The Sunday services are considered, however, as the ‘main event’ IMHO. It is the focus of all activities.

  • Steve, Yours is a common observation. The church must become a church OF Cells, rather than a church WITH cells (growth groups in your case) for the possibility of accomplishing everything THROUGH cells. May the Lord Jesus use you and your group to move the vision of cells forward by demonstrated fruitfulness!!
