In 1 Corinthians 12:7-11 we get a glimpse into the home group meetings of the 1st century, when Paul says:
“Now to each one the manifestation of the Spirit is given for the common good. To one there is given through the Spirit the message of wisdom, to another the message of knowledge by means of the same Spirit, to another faith by the same Spirit, to another gifts of healing by that one Spirit, to another miraculous powers, to another prophecy, to another distinguishing between spirits, to another speaking in different kinds of tongues, and to still another the interpretation of tongues. All these are the work of one and the same Spirit, and he gives them to each one, just as he determines.” (NIV)
This little video clip of body life shows each member using the Spirit’s gifts to minister to one another in power.
But exactly how does this work in the average small group like yours and mine? There are lots of different ways to do Spirit-led ministry in a small group, here’s one pattern that we teach leaders to use in the groups of our church.
The Five W’s
Like many churches we teach our leaders to follow a pattern of 5 W’s. Our groups typically use this order:
Welcome – Groups use an icebreaker or opening question to connect people to one another and get everyone engaged.
Witness – People pray for their friends that need God in pairs or triads. (We used to do this at the end of the meeting but found that it consistently got squeezed out when done then, because inevitably some other part of the meeting went long.)
Word – We look at God’s word together to let him shape our minds, hearts and actions.
Worship – Typically this involves singing a couple of God-centered songs to help us respond to God and listen to him.
Wind – Spirit-led ministry to one another.
It’s easy to get in a rut as a small group in terms of ministry if all you do is say something like, “What would you like prayer for today?” The main problem with this approach is that God may want to do something entirely different than what is on people’s mind.
To tune into what the Spirit is saying, we encourage leaders to invite the Holy Spirit to speak to people during the worship time and to release his supernatural gifts to each person. This is also the time for the leaders to tell group members to listen to the Spirit for any impressions—pictures, phrases or scriptures he might give—during worship.
The worship time is then followed by a time of silence and then people are asked to “give expression to their impressions.” After people have been ample given time to share impressions, we typically move into smaller groups—perhaps forming groups of four or five people or breaking into groups of men and women. In these smaller groups we ask what impressions spoke to people. That is where we begin our ministry. If there is time after that, we then take personal prayer requests.
For example, one evening in my small group, the person leading ministry time, after a time of silence, asked what impressions or sensations people had experienced. In response I shared that my hands were tingling. The ministry time leader then asked, “Does anyone have a problem with their hands that they would like prayer for?”
A young woman in the group who was a new believer said that she had a condition that caused the skin on her hands to peal off and that her doctor had told her that there was no cure and that she would have this condition for the rest of her life.
So we laid hands on her hands and prayed for her. After a brief time we asked her if she sensed anything. She said, “Yes, my hands are getting very warm.” We told her that this was a sign of God’s healing activity and we prayed some more. Again asked her what she was experiencing. and she said, “My hands are getting very hot.” She had a concerned look on her face, but we were getting more excited and prayed for her once more. Then she reported, “It feels like my hands are on fire!”, and she went to the bathroom and ran cold water over them perhaps to keep them from igniting!
Jesus totally healed her hands and they have given her no problems since that time several years ago!
In John 14:12-14, Jesus says: “I tell you the truth, anyone who has faith in me will do what I have been doing. He will do even greater things than these, because I am going to the Father. And I will do whatever you ask in my name, so that the Son may bring glory to the Father. You may ask me for anything in my name, and I will do it.”
Ask for awesome, God-sized things in your group. Invite God to do things so big that people will realize how amazing and big his love and power are.
I like to pray what the early church prayed in Acts 4:30: “Lord, stretch out your hand to heal and perform miraculous signs and wonders through the name of your holy servant Jesus.” God wants to do just that and is waiting for us to ask.

Liberando los dones del Espritu y poder en tu pequeño grupo.

En 1 Corintios 12:7-11 tenemos una idea de las reuniones de los grupos de origen en el siglo primero, cuando Pablo dice:
“Pero a cada uno le es dada la manifestación del Espritu para provecho.
Porque a éste es dada por el Espritu palabra de sabidura; a otro, palabra de ciencia según el mismo Espritu; a otro, fe por el mismo Espritu; y a otro, dones de sanidades por el mismo Espritu. A otro, el hacer milagros; a otro, profeca; a otro, discernimiento de espritus; a otro, diversos géneros de lenguas; y a otro, interpretación de lenguas. Pero todas estas cosas las hace uno y el mismo Espritu, repartiendo a cada uno en particular como él quiere” (RV)
Este pequeño vdeo de la vida corporal muestra a cada miembro usando los dones del Espritu para ministrar a otros en el poder.
Pero exactamente, ¿Cómo funciona esto en el pequeño grupo como el tuyo y el mo? Hay muchas diferentes maneras de hacer el ministerio dirigido por el Espritu en un grupo pequeño, quiero compartir un patrón que enseñamos a los lderes para su uso en los grupos de nuestra iglesia.
Cinco palabras fundamentales
Al igual que muchas iglesias nosotros enseñamos a nuestros lderes a seguir un patrón de las Cinco palabras fundamentales. Nuestros grupos tpicamente usan este orden:
Bienvenido – Los grupos utilizan un rompe hielo o la pregunta de apertura para conectar a las personas entre s y conseguir que todos participan.
Testigos – La gente ora por sus amigos que necesitan a Dios en parejas o tros. (Solamos hacer ésto al final de la reunión, pero nos pareció que constantemente quedaba excluida, porque, inevitablemente, otra parte de la reunión se haca más larga).
La Palabra- Juntos nos fijamos en la palabra de Dios y le dejamos que moldee nuestras mentes, corazones y acciones.
Adoración – Generalmente, ésto implica cantar un par de canciones centradas en Dios para ayudarnos a responder a Dios y escucharlo.
Viento – El Ministerio guiado por el Espritu a otros.
Es fácil conseguir una rutina en un grupo pequeño en términos de ministerio, si lo único que haces es decir algo como: “¿Qué te gustara orar hoy?” El principal problema con este enfoque es que Dios quiere hacer algo completamente diferente a lo que está en la mente de las personas.
Para sintonizar con lo que el Espritu está diciendo, animamos a los lderes a que inviten al Espritu Santo a hablar a la gente durante el tiempo de adoración y para liberar sus dones sobrenaturales en cada persona. Éste es también el momento en que los lderes le dicen a los miembros del grupo que escuchen al Espritu por impresiones-imágenes, frases o pasajes de las Escrituras que podran dar durante la adoración.
El tiempo de adoración es seguido por un momento de silencio y luego se le pide a la gente que “plasme sus impresiones.” Después de que a la gente se le ha dado bastante tiempo para compartir impresiones, normalmente nos movemos en grupos más pequeños, tal vez formando grupos de cuatro o cinco personas o entre grupos de hombres y mujeres. En estos grupos más pequeños nos preguntamos qué impresiones hablaron a la gente. Ah es donde comenzamos nuestro ministerio. Si hay tiempo después de eso, entonces, tomamos peticiones personales.
Por ejemplo, una noche en mi grupo pequeño, la persona que lideraba la ministración, después de un tiempo de silencio, preguntó qué impresiones o sensaciones las personas haban experimentado. En respuesta compart “siento un hormigueo en mis manosâ€. El lder del tiempo de ministración preguntó luego: “¿Alguien tiene un problema con sus manos y les gustara que oremos?”
Una mujer joven en el grupo que era nueva creyente dijo que tena una condición que le causa a la piel de sus manos que se desprenda y su médico le haba dicho que no haba cura y ella iba a tener esta condición por el resto de su vida.
As que nos pusimos las manos en sus manos y oramos por ella. Después de un breve momento le preguntamos si haba sentido algo. Ella dijo: “S, mis manos se están poniendo muy caliente.” Le dijimos que se trataba de un signo de actividad sanadora de Dios y oramos más. Una vez más se le preguntó lo que estaba experimentando. y ella dijo: “Mis manos se están poniendo muy caliente.” Ella tena una mirada de preocupación en su rostro, pero estábamos cada vez más emocionados y oramos por ella una vez más. Luego ella informó: “¡Siento mis manos en llamas!”, Y se fue al baño y se pasó agua fra tal vez para evitar que se incendiaran.
Jesús sanó completamente sus manos y no le han dado ningún problema desde entonces, ¡esto fue hace varios años!
En Juan 14:12-14, De cierto, de cierto os digo: El que en m cree, las obras que yo hago, él las hará también; y aún mayores hará, porque yo voy al Padre. Y todo lo que pidiereis al Padre en mi nombre, lo haré, para que el Padre sea glorificado en el Hijo. Si algo pidiereis en mi nombre, yo lo haré. ”
Pide cosas impresionantes, del tamaño de Dios en su grupo. Invita a Dios a hacer cosas tan grandes que la gente se dará cuenta lo increble y grande que su amor y poder.
Quiero orar lo que la iglesia primitiva oraba en Hechos 4:30: “Señor, extiende tu mano para que se hagan sanidades y señales y prodigios mediante el nombre de tu santo Hijo Jesús.” Dios quiere hacer eso y está esperando que le pidamos.
