Two Winged Discipleship

Living with an introvert, and being a bit of an extravert, I am surprised by the number of introverts who prefer to remain anonymous and even hidden in a group. Some people prefer large crowds because they can hide better. For some people, the entry point is the celebration rather than a cell. If the Holy Spirit draws an unchurched person to the celebration, isn’t this a good thing? After all, cell growth can occur with people who have come to the celebration first as well as with people who have never attended a celebration. We are part of a two-winged church.

The beauty of being a cell pastor is that I understand that both cell and celebration are part of a balanced ministry. Evangelism and discipleship need to happen in both gatherings. Too many small groups miss this point. Any group, any ministry, even any worship experience that does not reach out to the unchurched person is missing the commandment in the Great Commission.

Guests are checking out the church to see if they will be accepted. Some may think that the roof will fall in on them if they attended a worship celebration. Many wonder if they will be welcomed or if they will find a cold dead religion. When cell members understand that they will have the opportunity to welcome the unchurched with every new guest, they are more prepared to share Christ’s love. Cell members use what they have experienced in the cell and show that love to the unchurched. Who would you prefer to greet the guests visiting your celebration times? I want somebody greeting our guests who will listen and love on them.

In fact, the celebration is a great way for cell members to utilize their spiritual gifts. They can minister to people who are not connected to the body of Christ. They can assist with all of the aspects of worship because they have experienced the blessings of worship in their cells. These are the people who understand that we are all called to be ministers, and they are more ready to encourage and serve people at the celebration.

So often people come to the celebration with a spiritual need. We pray that the message will touch their hearts and even be used to draw them closer to the Lord. Sometimes the call to commitment comes just at the time that the conviction of the Holy Spirit and the love of a friend have drawn them to attend. Shouldn’t we use cell and celebration as entry points into the Kingdom? If anything, we need more emphasis and work on the Great Commission. Pray that God uses your cells and your celebrations to draw people to himself. What can you do to make sure that both are outreach focused? Wasn’t Jesus concerned about this when he discipled the disciples even in the crowd?

God bless you!
