When a cell reaches the multiplication point, it should be divided to make way for a new younger cell that will continue with the Gospel’s expansion process.
Sometimes, however, multiplication can be a source of sadness for the cell members. They know that they will all have to take different directions after sharing and fostering a relationship of mutual friendship. This sadness can even reach the extreme level of becoming a barrier for multiplication when the members wish to continue their comradeship for an indefinite time.
For the multiplication to be a joy and not sadness, it should be sown from the outset into the hearts of the cell members. They should know that multiplication is the goal of the cell. Fellowship is not the ultimate goal. When multiplication is positioned as the primary goal the people will expect to reach that moment.
The multiplication day must be a day of joy and mutual congratulations. Multiplication should be seen for what it is: the expansion of the message of salvation among the lost. Those who experience resistance to multiplication due to the fellowship that has being developed are the ones that do not have clarity on the true purposes of the cell model.

Cuando una célula llega al punto de la multiplicación debe dividirse para dar paso a una nueva célula joven que continuará con el proceso de expansión del evangelio.
Sin embargo, algunas veces la multiplicación puede ser motivo de tristeza para los miembros de la célula. Ellos saben que deberán tomar rumbos diferentes personas que un por un tiempo convivieron fomentando una relación de amistad mutua. So, I’ve moved to a completely different approach that seems to be very well understood in America… “Your group is like a healthy family. There are spiritual children, young people, and parents in the group. A healthy family’s parents help the young men and women grow up and have families of their own, which is easier to do in their own home.”
This probably doesn’t work culturally in El Salvador as it does here, but when I explain group expansion/birthing/multiplication in this way, everyone says, “That makes sense… staying at home your entire life and living with your parents is weird.”
Solid comment, Randall. You, more than most, have wrestled with how to contextualize multiplication within the North American context. I do love Mario’s blog here becuase he does hit on the bedrock principle that the cell must move forward toward multiplication. Yes, there are different analogies and ways to help people understand the bedrock truth. Yet, after 18 years of focusing almost entirely on cell church ministry, I do believe that the truth of making disciples who make disciples through the multiplication of cell groups is still at the core of cell ministry. I’m there right now guys. I have trained my apprenctice and have just released my cell to him. I made the mistake of planting a cell in my house. I grew it quickly and then got stuck because raising the apprentice took sometime. The cell remains in tact but is moving away from my house. I’m going out to rescue a cell and raise apprentices. Once that is accomplished I will plant a new cell with new people. I like cell planting as a multiplication method.
