Praying for the Sick in the Cell

mario

by Mario Vega

When we talk about the gifts of the Spirit, we tend to limit them to speaking in tongues and prophecy. But we must not forget that healings and miracles are also gifts of the Spirit.

In a congregation whose membership is growing, it is increasingly difficult for the pastor to pray for all the sick. This is not because of the lack of willingness, but because it is increasingly difficult to devote adequate time to pray for a growing number of needs.

Yes, the pastor can pray for as many sick people as he wishes, but the Bible also says that we need to pray for one another (James 5:16). This is a duty that all believers should practice as part of their priestly role.

The best place to pray for each other is in the cell. It is the place where people know each other intimately, can fully share what’s happening in their lives, and where emotional ties are established. Personal healing also takes place in this atmosphere as believers pray for one another.

In the larger celebration services, the pastor can make a general prayer for all the sick, even for those who are not present. But in the cell, each believer can confess faults to one another, place hands on the sick, and then pray for the gifts of healing. The cell is the ideal place for believers to serve each other through their spiritual gifts.

Invitation and Feedback (Invitación y Comentarios)

I remember the day that my wife (then girlfriend) and I were walking across our college campus, and Linda said to me, “I think you would make a good pastor someday.” The idea of being a pastor had not occurred to me before then, but I am now completing my 28th year as a pastor. (I often say Linda is still hoping I’ll be a good pastor someday!)

There are people in your group who never thought of sharing a thought from the scripture, organizing an outreach, or offering a prophetic word. And yet, with some encouragement they may excel at those things.

As a leader you can encourage the release of spiritual gifts in your group through a) invitation and b) feedback.

When you invite (not force) someone to use a gift, they feel they have permission to step out. You might assume they know they have permission, but until they try it the first time, most people don’t feel that empowerment. And as they do serve, it is important to offer feedback, usually in the form of appreciation. Letting someone know they helped others and glorified God will help them overcome the natural nervousness which can prevent them from serving.

Just like I remember Linda’s encouragement, someone in your group might always remember the day you spoke into their life with special encouragement to serve.

Bringing Out the Best in Others

By Michael Sove

Last week I was talking about how everyone is a “10” somewhere.  Everyone is good at something and can benefit the whole group when they use their gifts.  I tell my leaders all the time, “You are successful not if you do all the work.  You are successful if you bring out the best in others.”  A good leader is a facilitator who understands that everyone has a part to play and no part is too small.

One of the great blessings of utilizing the gifts of all the members is that they feel like they have something to contribute and that they belong.  The more the ministry is shared the better off everyone is.  In almost every case of groups disbanding in my experience, I have found a leader who was doing everything and not sharing the ministry.  The most effective groups form core teams.

I like what Michael Mack says in his book, The Pocket Guide to Burnout-Free Small Group Leadership “Your role as cell leader is not to lead the entire cell of eight or ten or twelve.  Your role is primarily to shepherd and disciple (develop) two or three people in your inner circle – and then to share ownership and leadership with them. “

My group has come alive since praying in and incorporating a core team approach.  But don’t settle with simply forming a core team and utilizing the gifts of the team.  Everyone who gathers with the group has something to share.  Obviously people are at all different levels of discovering and using their gifts.  As a leader I focus on how I can bring out the best in others.  The main question I ask myself after the group has met is this:  Did everyone participate and did people walk away edified or built up?

Next week I will share a tool I use to get everyone involved and how this leads to shared ministry.  Comments?

¿Comentarios?

Exercising Gifts in the Kitchen

by Jeff Tunnell

Tonight, around my kitchen table, a group of women from the church family are gathered.  Their focus is on creativity in projects of hand-made items, many of which will no doubt adorn their homes after the evening comes to a close.  The fellowship is sweet (although I am probably not supposed to be listening in) and a couple of babies sweeten the atmosphere with playful demands for attention.

The conversation turns to the morning’s Celebration gathering of cells.  One spiritually maturing lady (surrounded by those considered mentors and examples) states that God had given her a “word” to share with the gathered saints, but that in the larger group she felt a certain amount of fear to step out and present.  She asks for advice about how to enter this arena of operating in the gifts of the Holy Spirit.  Some of the women here are from her cell group and encourage her to capture the essence and bring the exhortation or prophetic sense this week in the supportive atmosphere of the cell.  I can hear the cheer in her voice as support comes from those who know her best.  There is little doubt that the Holy Spirit will speak to the cell and, one day, this choice vessel will be used by her Lord to edify the entire large gathering of cells!!

She is learning to walk in the Spirit, those closest will protect her from falling or experiencing rejection.  Together they will grow into maturity and ministry in the safest environment I can think of, the small group cell.  Really, I treasure what God has done!

Comments: How do you see it?  What is God doing in your midst this week?

The Cell Atmosphere and the Gifts of the Spirit

joelBy Joel Comiskey

The blogs last week established the fact that the New Testament church continually met in houses, which gathered in celebration when feasible. Paul wrote the gift passages to house churches where each person could exercise his or her role as a priest of the living God. The intimate home atmosphere continues to be the best place to find and exercise the spiritual gifts. Here are a few reasons why:

1. In a small environment everyone can participate. This is not true in the celebration service, where only one person will preach or lead worship. Some will do other tasks, but in the small group, the goal is for everyone to discover and exercise his or her spiritual gift. Cell ministry is face to face ministry and part of such relational ministry is getting to know the gifts of each member. We are not neglecting the celebration wing of the cell church. Rather, when someone is using their gift at a smaller level, they can then be asked to use it at a more public level.

2. A small group gives liberty to step out. It’s okay to make mistakes in a small group. Most cells have between 4 to 10 people. They are held in a relaxed atmosphere (my own cell is currently meeting at Dennys Restaurant). Give and take is the norm. Informality rules. The best cell leaders ask the members to share the load of the lesson, prayer time, and vision casting. In such an atmosphere, it’s easy to spot how God has wired or gifted each person because there’s freedom to step out.

3. It’s a perfect environment to observe the exercise of spiritual gifts. Perhaps you notice that John has the capacity to clarify the meaning of Scripture. Tell him that you believe he has the gift of teaching. Perhaps you notice that Joan always gravitates toward one-on-one conversations with needy people during the refreshment time. Tell her she might have the gift of exhortation. Perhaps Kirk likes to share “words from God.” Confirm Kirk’s gift of prophesy. The gifts were given to edify the body of Christ, and when people are built up through their use, others will feel strengthened and encouraged. Once the group becomes comfortable with each other and more knowledgeable about spiritual gifts, ask them to confirm in each other their spiritual gifts.

4. Gift use helps leaders not to become over-burdened with doing everything. Cell leaders need to delegate cell responsibilities according to the giftedness of those present, rather than trying to do it all themselves. We need to steer away from the lone-ranger mentality in cell ministry and focus on the team, the concept that each member is a minister.
