Patterns or Fabric?

by Ralph Neighbour

Garment designers create patterns on paper to be traced onto fabric. The fabric is then cut according to the pattern. Depending on the pattern, the fabric can become a shirt, a jacket, a pair of slacks. Note: the composition of the fabric does not change because of the pattern that cuts it. Silk is silk, whether it becomes a shirt or a dress.

Patterns must always consider the size of the person who will wear the garment. A small body does not need an XXX size shirt.

In the same way, each cell church must “tailor” the pattern to the field assigned by God for it to plant seed, but the fabric does not vary. It will be the same in every single case. The size and shape of the garment must fit the congregation and the community.

Back in the ’90’s, I began to work with a 300 member church in Singapore. We grew to 7,000 in 5 years. As we exploded, we began to offer annual Cell Seminars. Hundreds flew in from all over the world. We proudly displayed our “model,” unaware that one size did not fit all. Then we began to realize this problem so we had breakouts for pastors of churches of 100, 250, 500, etc. The fruit from those conferences was little better. We were missing the most important issue: we were handing out paper patterns of different sizes but we did not stress the importance of using the right fabric.

Pardon me for repeating over and over, but do remember it takes six times before something sticks! I repeat what I shared last week. This is what the fabric MUST BE if the cell church is to be valid:

CELL FABRIC – CUT TO YOUR PATTERN:

1. All believers possess equally the complete righteousness of Christ.

2. All believers can manifest the energeia, the charismata, of His Power.

3. Authentic evangelism is the body of Christ so exposing His indwelling presence that observing unbelievers will fall on their faces and worship Him.

4. Each cell, a body of Christ, exists to experience Him working out His salvation from the power of sin within them.

5. Each cell practices its prime mission: to assist Christ to fulfill His final mission: to draw all men to Himself. They cannot do this for Him; instead, they surrender themselves to Him to do this through them.

6. The local church does not form cells; the cells form the local church.

¿Patrones, o Tejidos?

As como explotó, comenzamos a ofrecer seminarios celulares anualmente.

  • Great article, especially from a tried and proven perspective. I was surprised to see the first principle being highlighted as essential. My first thought is that there must be churches that don’t believe this and it ultimately holds them back in cell ministry. Are there other reasons I’m not aware of that create the situation to emphasize that “All believers possess equally the complete righteousness of Christ?” Thanks again!
