Key Cell Church Principles

mario

by Mario Vega

As I explained before, principles are those truths that relate to the practice of cell ministry. You don’t find principles written in the Bible. Rather, principles have been formulated as cell churches apply biblical values to their own contexts.

The principles are the sum total of a great deal of reflection and concentrated wisdom. It is important to reflect carefully on each principle to extract its riches. The following are some principles I’ve been collecting from various men of God.

Let’s start with a couple of principles enunciated by Pastor David Cho:

  • “To succeed you must fail three times.”
  • “If goals for the leaders are not set they only meet to cohabitate.”

Here is another principle from Randall Neighbour:

  • “Multiplication is the visible sign of discipleship and spiritual health.”

I also have principles that I have heard from Joel Comiskey:

  • “Have only one training track but there are a variety of training methods.”
  • “The training track is the key to key to multiplication.”
  • “The model should be continually adjusted.”

Let’s look at another principle from Roberto Lay:

  • “Cells multiply only when leaders multiply.”

And as an apprentice, I suggest the following ones:

  • “In the cell work it is not about dismissing anyone but instead about making up for their deficiencies.”
  • “The goals in smaller churches are easier to reach than those of larger churches.”

There are other principles as well.

What is valuable about these principles is that they can apply to each church and are not limited by context or culture. They can help churches build their own unique models.

Surviving the Winter of Transition

jim

Jim Wall

Last Friday, Pastor Vega pointed out that the “more essential” things are often the “less visible” things; but, they are harder to see.  Our church is blessed. Before we even started the transition from a program/celebration paradigm to that of cell/celebration, we were warned about that. We were also told that unless the Senior Pastor is totally convinced this is God’s direction for the church, the cell groups would never be more than one of the programs.

Heeding those two warnings, I put together a small team of key influencers. We committed to meet weekly, to pray and worship together, to dig deep into the biblical values and key principles that would serve as the foundation for our new ministry paradigm. We wanted to learn from others. Even more we wanted an organic system that would thrive in our soil, not a transplanted one that would shrivel in the winter of transition.

It took time! The prototype cell met weekly for 18 months. We read every book we could find. We attended every cell seminar we could get to. We fasted and prayed and argued (admittedly not the most spiritual part of the journey, but essential!) and made up.  By the time we felt ready to go to the congregation, we had two important things in place; 1) The first wave of cell leaders had been to the “upper room” (for a lot longer than 10 days). We were filled with the Spirit and in unity; 2) We had a compelling Biblical foundation for why we were calling on the congregation to make such a dramatic change. The result was great response from the congregation and a successful transition.

It was hard at times.  There were people who left the church during that period. But those Biblical values and key principles held us together during the those days.

In the 15 years since we started this journey the model has changed along the way. Sometimes the changes were driven by number of cells we had to support (from the original 7 cells to more than 100 now). Sometimes they were driven by the need to “freshen up the paint.” What has remained constant are the Biblical values and key principles that serve as our foundation. Next week, I’ll write about some of those.

For now, can you articulate the underlying the principles of your model?

Sobrevivir el invierno de Transición

Jim Wall

The Hunter, the Monkey, and the Peanuts

ralph

by Ralph Neighbour

Have you heard about the trapper who found a way to catch monkeys? He attached a glass bottle with a narrow neck to a tree and put peanuts in it. The monkey would see the peanuts, slide his hand into the bottle’s neck and snatch the peanuts. His clenched fist would not allow him to remove his hand. He would stand for hours holding onto the peanuts until the trapper captured him.

It’s amazing to see the values traditional Christians hang onto rather than release them so they can move on. The peanuts are quite conventional: the clergy are superior to the laity; “church” is a building where we serve the Lord; seeker sensitive services grow Sunday audiences, and “small groups” are tools to keep members happy. There may be variations on these themes, but in the end they’re still peanuts that hinder the emergence of the authentic Body of Christ.

The Supreme Value: The Body of Christ

The triune God is an invisible Spirit. He cannot be seen or known unless He assumes some visible form. Romans 1 explains He revealed Himself as Elohim, the Creator, by speaking the universe into existence. He revealed Himself as Jehovah, Who “will always be what I have always been,” by inhabiting the body of a man sired by the Father. In John he stated, “for the works which the Father hath given me to finish, the same works that I do, bear witness of me, that the Father hath sent me.”

Inside the skin of Jesus lived both a human and God the Son. His works to finish were to declare the reign (Kingdom) of God over all created things and to atone for the sin of all mankind. On the cross, He cried, “It is finished!”

But the Father had another further assignment for the Son. It would require a second body, one that could exist simultaneously in every generation and in every ethnos. The removal of the Jesus body was followed ten days later by the Son descending in Shekinah tongues of fire as He entered His new body. Instantly He began to function to fulfill His final assignment. As Peter explained He was revealing His indwelling Presence inside the skins of these new body members. Thousands bowed before Him and entered the Kingdom to live under His Lordship.

We are ecclesia, “called out ones” who have received the fullness of the Godhead residing inside their skin. After being baptized by the Holy Spirit to become body members, they transport the indwelling Christ into their oikoses. According to Paul in 1 Corinthians 14:24-25, Christ Himself then energizes prophecies in these small groups to reveal His Presence, causing unbelievers to fall on their faces confessing “God is among you.”

The Cell Is the Most Valuable Treasure of God On The Earth Today

We must “let go” of our peanut-sized misconceptions about “church” and value what God values: a basic community of Christ-filled body members controlled by the Head, exposing His Presence and Power to unbelievers and ungifted ones.

Key Principles

1. All believers possess equally the complete righteousness of Christ.

2. All believers can manifest the energeia, the charismata, of His Power.

3. Authentic evangelism is the body of Christ so exposing His indwelling presence that observing unbelievers will fall on their faces and worship Him.

4. Each cell, a body of Christ, exists to experience Him working out His salvation from the power of sin within them.

5. Each cell practices its prime mission: to assist Christ to fulfill His final mission: to draw all men to Himself. They cannot do this for Him; instead, they surrender themselves to Him to do this through them.

6. The local church does not form cells; the cells form the local church.

by Jeff Tunnell

Sorting out our biblical values will lead us to principles and conducts that glorify God and His ways, which ultimately make the Gospel irresistible to some and repulsive to others. As we are consistent in our faith and practices He will reap the harvest and gain the reward of His suffering!

Values – related to the great truths of the Gospel, values are extracted from the Word of God

  • The Bible is our authority
  • Prayer is our means
  • Dependency on God is our posture
  • Restoring relationship between man and God is our passion
  • Love is our motive
  • Service to God and others is our expression
  • His promise to return is our urgency; to hear Him say, “Well done good and faithful servant” is our goal

Principles – essential rules for conduct that are consistent with truth

  • All the believers devoted themselves
    • to the apostles’ teaching,
    • and to fellowship,
    • and to sharing in meals (including the Lord’s Supper),
    • and to prayer. Acts 2:42
    • They worshiped together at the Temple each day,
    • met in homes for the Lord’s Supper,
    • and shared their meals with great joy and generosity – praising God
    • and having favor with all the people.
    • And the Lord was adding to their number day by day those who were being saved. Acts 2:46-47

Biblical Values and Time-tested Principles

joel

by Joel Comiskey

At the Dallas JCG conference last February, Mario Vega spoke on values, principles, and models. Before hearing Mario, I knew about Biblical values, time-tested principles, and cell church models. Yet, Mario connected them for me. God used Mario to show me that the Bible must be the basis for all the values we hold dearly. Cell church allows us to live out those biblical values to a fuller extent. In other words, we believe in the cell church strategy because cell church allows us to truly live out Biblical values. I’m sure there are many, but the foundational biblical values are:

  • community (God is a Trinity)
  • priesthood of all believrs (everyone is a minister)
  • relational evangelism (Jesus and His incarnation)
  • discipleship (Christ’s last command)
  • multiplication (be fruitful and multiply)

We do cell church because we believe that a two-winged strategy will help us to live out the biblical values. Why do we need cell church principles? Once we’re committed to do cell church because it’s biblical, it’s important to know how to cell church the most effectively. We can do this by following the time-tested principles that fruitful cell churches follow. In other words, what do they all growing cell churches have in common, regardless of culture, denomination, or history. My research on worldwide cell churches highlighted five key principles:

  • commitment to prayer and spirituality (God is the fuel behind the cell church)
  • lead pastor and team giving clear vision and direction to cell ministry (in contrast to a church with cells).
  • cell ministry promoted as the base of the church (not just another program)
  • clear, holistic definition of a cell group (the cell is the church)

I noticed additional principles as well, such as:

  • The passion behind cell ministry is evangelism and church growth.
  • Reproduction (multiplication) is the major goal of each cell group.
  • Cell and celebration attendance expected of everyone attending the church.
  • Clearly established leadership requirements for those entering cell ministry.
  • Required cell leadership training for all potential cell group leaders.
  • Cell leadership developed from within the church itself, at all levels.
  • A supervisory care structure for each level of leadership (G-12 or 5×5).
  • Follow-up system of visitors and new converts administered through cell groups.
  • Cell lessons based on pastor’s teaching to promote continuity between cell and celebration (although flexibility might be given to meet the needs of specific homogeneous groups)

I talk extensively about all of the principles in my book Reap the Harvest.

As a church follows Biblical values and time-tested principles, God will raise up models for others to follow. Model cell churches should always point people back to biblical values and time-tested principles, while generously welcoming people to see what God has done in their midst. Often people need to see practical examples to really understand the cell strategy.
