In cell ministry it is important to have clear concepts of the system. Those concepts are the values, principles and models. It is important to understand each of these elements to know what is essential in cell ministry in order to focus more effectively.

The values are the most important elements of cell ministry because they are related to the great truths of the Gospel. The principles are those truths that are related to cell practice, and the models are those forms which relate to how the work is done in a specific place.

The values are extracted from the Word of God. The principles are drawn from the cell experiences that have been accumulating for half a century–since the modern cell movement started. Finally, the models are built by applying the values and principles to a particular reality.

Because the values are the expression of biblical teachings, their applicability is perpetual and valid for all cultures. They are good at all times and places. The principles are universally applicable since they were defined as a result of the work that many churches have fulfilled in various parts of the globe and throughout the decades. The ones that are not valid in every place and time are the models. They respond to the unique characteristics of each church’s time and place. Therefore, the main effort should be placed in living out the values and principles of cell ministry.

En el trabajo con células es importante tener claros los conceptos básicos del sistema. Esos conceptos son los valores, los principios y los modelos. Es importante comprender cada uno de estos elementos para saber qué es lo esencial del trabajo y en qué se debe colocar el mayor esfuerzo.

Los valores son los elementos más importantes del trabajo celular y están relacionados con las grandes verdades del evangelio. Los principios son aquellas verdades que se relación con la práctica del trabajo celular.

Los modelos son aquellas formas de trabajo que se relacionan con la manera de hacer el trabajo en un lugar especfico.

Los valores se extraen de la Palabra de Dios. Los principios se extraen de la experiencia del trabajo celular que se ha ido acumulando por ya medio siglo desde que comenzó al movimiento celular moderno. Finalmente, los modelos se construyen al aplicar los valores y los principios a la realidad particular.

Dado que los valores son la expresión de las enseñanzas bblicas, su vigencia es perpetua y valedera para toda cultura. Son buenos en todo tiempo y lugar. Los principios también son de aplicación universal ya que se fueron definiendo como resultado del trabajo que diversas iglesias han realizado en distintos puntos del planeta y a lo largo de varias décadas.

Los modelos son los que no son valederos en todo lugar y época. Ellos responden a las caractersticas únicas del tiempo y del lugar de cada iglesia. Por tanto, el empeño principal debe colocarse en vivir los valores y los principios del trabajo celular.

Early one morning more than 10 years ago I sat in our church’s prayer room asking “But can it work here?”

I had just read Joel Comiskey’s book Home Cell Group Explosion. I was captivated as I read about churches in Latin America which grew to amazing sizes while producing high quality disciples. The promise of a church which made disciples which made disciples was pulling me strongly.

But suburban Pittsburgh is a long way from Latin America. Would it work here? In prayer that morning I sensed God giving me two seemingly contradictory answers: 1) “What you read won’t work in Pittsburgh”, and, 2) “do it” (implement cell ministry at our church).

As we became a cell-based ministry, I was pleased at the results in the lives of our people, and I was highly committed to the foundational principles. It was “working” in many ways. We have grown significantly in both number and maturity. But I knew that God had also shown me “it won’t work here,” and I didn’t know what to make of this contradiction.

Today, I realize that God was showing me that copying what happened in Bogota or elsewhere would not work in Pittsburgh; I would need to keep listening to the Spirit about how to shape the ministry around the key biblical principles while learning from others.

For example, our Encounter Retreat is different in many ways from the ones in Bogota or Baton Rouge. Yet, yesterday I was moved to tears as I read accounts of last weekend’s Encounter: a man with no feeling in his feet and walking for years with a cane left healed and no longer uses a cane. A couple that had been ready for divorce and to walk away from God has been transformed. They recommitted to God and to each other. They are growing and testifying to God’s power. They credit their group for embracing them with love and guiding them toward the weekend.

I hear so many leaders ask the same question: Will it work here? Answer: What they are doing elsewhere won’t work for you, but the Holy Spirit will show you how to employ the key principles where you are.

¿Funcionará aqu?

Temprano una mañana más de 10 años me senté en la sala de oración de nuestra iglesia preguntando “¿Pero puede trabajar aqu?”

Yo acababa de leer Inicio Joel Comiskey el libro de la célula Grupo de explosión. Me cautivó cuando le acerca de las iglesias en América Latina que creció a tamaños increbles, mientras que la producción discpulos de alta calidad. La promesa de una iglesia que hace discpulos que hicieron los discpulos me empujaba con fuerza.

Pero los suburbios de Pittsburgh es un largo camino desde América Latina. ¿Funcionara aqu? En la oración de la mañana sent que Dios me da dos respuestas aparentemente contradictorias: 1) “Lo que se lee no va a funcionar en Pittsburgh”, y, 2) “que hacen” (poner en práctica el ministerio celular en nuestra iglesia).

A medida que se convirtió en un ministerio basado en células, me quedé contento con los resultados en las vidas de nuestro pueblo, y yo estaba plenamente comprometida con los principios fundacionales. Se trataba de “trabajo” de muchas maneras. Hemos crecido de manera significativa, tanto en número y madurez. Pero yo saba que Dios también me haba mostrado “no va a funcionar aqu”, y yo no saba qué hacer con esta contradicción.

Hoy en da, me doy cuenta de que Dios me estaba mostrando que la copia de lo que sucedió en Bogotá o en otra parte no iba a funcionar en Pittsburgh, que tendra que seguir escuchando al Espritu sobre cómo dar forma al ministerio torno a los principios bblicos clave, mientras que aprender de los demás.

Por ejemplo, nuestro Retiro de Encuentro es diferente en muchos aspectos de los que están en Bogotá o en Baton Rouge. Sin embargo, ayer me conmovió hasta las lágrimas al leer las cuentas de encuentro de la semana pasada: un hombre sin sentir en sus pies y caminar durante años con un bastón izquierdo curado y ya no se usa un bastón. Una pareja que haba sido preparado para el divorcio y alejarse de Dios se ha transformado. Se comprometieron nuevamente a Dios y entre s. Ellos están creciendo y dando testimonio del poder de Dios. Que dan crédito a su grupo para abrazar con amor y guiarlos hacia el fin de semana.

He odo a tantos lderes hacen la misma pregunta: ¿Va a trabajar aqu? Respuesta: Lo que están haciendo en otros lugares no va a funcionar para usted, pero el Espritu Santo le mostrará cómo emplear los principios fundamentales donde se encuentra.

Theology always breeds methodology! In 1969, I left a secure position with the Evangelism Division of Texas Baptists to plant an “experimental church.” I knew nothing about Yonggi Cho or the cell movement. I only knew American churchianity violated the priesthood of all believers and failed to harvest the unreached. So we threw the mold away. I knew we needed to meet in homes, but we failed to grow as we met in “host homes” each week. Then I read in Acts that the first Christ bodies moved from house to house, breaking bread and fellowshipping. By forming cells meeting in the same house every week, we failed to follow the pattern of the early church. The very month we began to move from house to house, we began to grow, harvesting unbelievers at a rate of 1 conversion for every 4 believers!

This caused me to realize there were core values we had missed. We began to follow exactly the pattern of the early church. There was a theology behind the method of moving from house to house. It was the need to transport Christ, the Head of the Body, to be revealed to the families and neighbors of the cell members. One unbelieving husband who was watching TV in the den while his wife’s cell met in the living room, became aware of the healing and deliverance taking place in the group. Over and over, we saw family members (including him)  move from another room to inquisitively sit in our midst. This is the way we first experienced the reality of 1 Corinthians 14:24-25! Stating “God is certainly among you,” family members and then neighbors began to fall on their faces and open their hearts to the cell members.

The most sacred community on the face of the earth is the ecclesia, gathered in many homes, revealing the Presence and Power of the indwelling Christ. The same Spirit of the Son that resided in the body of Jesus now dwells in the cell group. In Jesus, Christ  the Son fulfilled several missions: He atoned for the sin of mankind and revealed the presence of the Kingdom of God. Now, in His new body, He invades the kingdoms of satan. His remaining mission is to personally empower each member, revealing to skeptics He has come to occupy their lives.

The methodology of moving “from house to house” provides Christ the opportunity to invade all the families and friends not exposed when a single residence becomes the weekly meeting place for the cell. The theology behind this is the desire of Christ to expose His presence in all the households (oikoses) of the cell members. If your cells are not fully exposed to all the oikoses they represent, you are making it harder for Christ to fulfill his present mission. It may be more convenient to meet at the same place each week but it smothers the witness of His body.

¡La teologa siempre sustenta la metodologa! En 1969, dejé una posición segura con la División de Evangelismo de los bautistas de Texas, para plantar una “iglesia experimental.” Yo no saba nada acerca de Yonggi Cho o el movimiento de las células. Yo sólo saba iglesianismo Americano, violado por el sacerdocio de todos los creyentes y que falla a cosechar a los no alcanzados. As que bote el molde. Yo saba que tenamos que reunirnos en los hogares, pero fallamos a crecer al reunirnos en “casas acogidas” cada semana. Después le en Hechos que los primeros cuerpos de Cristo se trasladaron de casa en casa, partiendo el pan y la comunión. Al formar reuniones celulares en la misma casa cada semana, fallamos el patrón de la iglesia primitiva. El mismo mes en que comenzó a moverse de casa en casa, empezamos a crecer, la cosecha de no creyentes a una tasa de conversión de ¡1 a 4 creyentes!

Esto me hizo entender que haban valores que se haban perdido. Empezamos a seguir exactamente el patrón de la iglesia primitiva. Haba una teologa detrás del método de pasar de casa en casa. Fue la necesidad de transportar a Cristo, la Cabeza del Cuerpo, que se reveló a los familiares y vecinos de los miembros de la célula. Un marido infiel que estaba viendo la televisión en el cuarto, mientras que su esposa reuna la célula en la sala, se dio cuenta de la sanidad y liberación que da lugar en el grupo. Una y otra vez, vimos a miembros de la familia (incluido él) moviéndose de un lugar a otro para sentarse con curiosidad en medio de nosotros. ¡Esta es la forma en que experimentó por primera vez la realidad de 1 Corintios 14:24-25! Afirmando que “Dios está entre vosotros”, los miembros de la familia y los vecinos comenzaron a caer sobre el rostro y abrieron  sus corazones a los miembros de la célula.

La comunidad más sagrada sobre la faz de la tierra es la ecclesia, se reúnen en muchos hogares, revelando la presencia y poder de la presencia de Cristo. El mismo Espritu del Hijo, que resida en el cuerpo de Jesús vive ahora en el grupo celular. Si sus células no son completamente expuestas a todas los hogares (oikoses) que representan, tú lo estás haciendo más difcil para Cristo para cumplir su misión actual. Puede ser más conveniente reunirse en el mismo lugar cada semana, pero desenfoca el testimonio de su cuerpo.

We value what we do and we do what we value. If you observe yourself objectively, discovering your values is not difficult. Also, you don’t have to be around someone else very long to discover what their values are. We all spend our time and resources on our values.

Principles change us, we don’t change them. That is, we may rely upon their unchanging nature, understanding that if we take contrary actions, the principle will win out in the end. Principles are universal as well and therefore applicable in every part of the world.

When cell church values and principles are developed and followed (instead of following a model) we can make decisions and act confidently. When we divert from our commitment to those values and principles that we espouse, our conscience will offer a warning; I suggest you listen!

Sobre los principios y modelos

Valoramos lo que hacemos y hacemos lo que valoramos. Si tú te observas objetivamente, el descubrir tus valores no es difcil. También, no tienes que estar alrededor de alguien por mucho tiempo para descubrir cuáles son sus valores. Todos gastamos tiempo y recursos en nuestros valores.

Los principios nos cambian, nosotros no cambiamos los principios. Es decir, podemos confiar en su naturaleza inmutable, entendiendo que si nosotros tomamos acciones contrarias, los principios ganarán en el final. Los principios son universales y por lo tanto aplican en todas partes del mundo.

Cuando los valores y principios de la iglesia celular son desarrollados y seguidos (en vez de seguir el modelo) podemos tomar decisiones y actuar con confianza. Cuando nos desviamos de nuestros compromisos a esos valores y principios que adoptamos, nuestra conciencia nos ofrecerá una advertencia; ¡Te sugiero que escuches!

Principles Versus Models

Many pastors believe that finding the right model will unlock their success. They might have heard the pastor of a growing cell church say something like, “All you have to do is follow what I’m doing and your church will grow.” You are then instructed to come back multiply times to learn the correct procedures. But is this the right way to go about it?

The reality is that principles-not models-produce fruitfulness. Principles leapfrog models every time. Principles allow for flexibility and apply to a wide range of situations. Models are culturally bound.  Models are inflexible and often require the exact set of circumstances to make them work. Principles apply to any denomination, culture, or situation. The growing cell churches are innovative and break the molds.

David Cho, for example, became convinced of the cell strategy on his death bed. He realized that Jethro’s advice to Moses in Exodus 18 applied to his own situation. He then read about the house churches in the book of Acts, and God gave him the vision to start home groups. He had to innovate and tweak his structure as he went forward because he was pioneering new ground. He followed the Spirit of God based on Scripture.

The Elim Church did something similar. They became excited about cell ministry after visiting Cho’s church in Korea, but they realized that they had to adapt to the Salvadorean culture. Cho’s exact model didn’t work for them. They decided that each cell needed a weekly planning meeting to prepare for the cell group. This was one of the keys that unlocked cell fruitfulness in their own culture.

Values come from biblical truths while principles come from what cell churches are actually doing (practice). Models come from the application of biblical values and cell church principles in one’s own context. The formula might go like this: biblical values + time-tested principles= contextual models. Yet, after arriving at one’s own model, it should never be promoted as “the” model. The values and principles should always be promoted.

• Week 1 (September 4-10). We’ll talk about how biblical values + time-tested principles= contextual models.
• Week 2 (September 11-17). The cell church world has been rocked negatively with castle builders and those who want everyone else to follow “their model.”  I call this phenomenon “model sickness.” The cell church movement has learned the need to move together as a movement based on principles.
• Week 3 (September 18-24). We will be sharing those biblical values and key principles. Some of the biblical values are: community, priesthood of all believers, relational evangelism, and multiplication. Key principles: prayer, senior pastor guiding the cell vision, cells as base of the church, and a clear definition of the cell.
• Week 4 (September 25-October 01). Some cell churches become models (not all) as they work out the values and principles in their own context. We’ll talk about some of those models who are in turn promoting the values and principles.

Muchos pastores creen que encontrar el modelo adecuado desbloqueara su éxito. Ellos podran haber escuchado el pastor de una iglesia celular cada vez que dicen algo como: “Todo lo que tienes que hacer es seguir lo que estoy haciendo y su iglesia crecerá.” Entonces, eres instruido a regresar varias veces para aprender los procedimientos correctos. Pero, ¿Es esta la forma correcta de hacerlo?

La realidad es que los principios— no modelos–producen frutos. Principios saltan modelos cada vez. Principios permiten una mayor flexibilidad y se aplican a una amplia gama de situaciones. Los modelos están vinculados culturalmente. Los modelos son inflexibles y requieren a menudo el conjunto exacto de las circunstancias para que funcionen. Principios se aplican a cualquier otra denominación, cultura o situación. Las iglesias celulares que están en crecimiento son innovadoras y rompen los moldes.

David Cho, por ejemplo, se convenció de la estrategia de la célula en su lecho de muerte. Se dio cuenta de que el consejo de Jetro a Moisés en Éxodo 18 aplicaba a su propia situación. Entonces, al leer acerca de las iglesias en casas en el libro de los Hechos, le dio la visión para empezar las células. Yo llamo a este fenómeno “mal modelo”. El movimiento de la iglesia celular ha aprendido la necesidad de avanzar juntos con un movimiento basado en principios.
• Semana 3 (septiembre 18-24). Vamos a compartir los valores y principios bblicos. Algunos de los valores bblicos son: la comunidad, el sacerdocio de todos los creyentes, el evangelismo relacional, y la multiplicación. Los principios clave: la oración, un pastor guiando la visión celular, las células en base a la iglesia, y una definición clara de la célula.
• Semana 4 (septiembre 25-octubre 01). Algunas iglesias celulares se convierten en modelos (no todos), as que trabajan en valores y principios en su propio contexto. Vamos a hablar de algunos de los modelos que están promoviendo los valores y principios.
