The Balance Between Quantity and Quality

david

By: Msc. David Jaramillo Burgos

Several times I have heard pastors say the following phrases:

  • “God does not ask for numbers but quality.”
  • “we are few but we are good”
  • and others, urge their members to become a mega church and place their people under constant pressure by monitoring all statistics.

Faced with this reality, the following question arises: What is the right balance between quantity and quality?

To answer this question let me reflect on the ministry of the apostle Paul who wrote to the Corinthians: “… and besides all this, every day is about my anxiety for the church. Who is weak, and I am not weak? Who makes you stumble, and I am not worthy? “(2 Cor 11.28-29). In these verses we see a leader who feels a sincere concern for his people–the very ones he brought to the knowledge of the truth. The Apostle didn’t see these people as “just numbers” but those with whom he had created a relational bond that made him sincerely interested in their needs and struggles. This interest led the apostle to say that he “travailed in pain ” until Christ be formed in them (Gal. 4:19). He longed for his people to arrive at the “whole measure of the fullness of Christ” (Eph. 4: 13).

However, the apostle’s interest in people stirred him to “fully proclaimed the gospel of Christ” (Rom. 15:19). His dream to reach all the inhabitants of the empire stirred him to feel indebted to all of them (Rom.1:14). This passion stirred him to preach in their homes, synagogues, and even in the Areopagus in Athens.
Paul’s example is a model for the cell church pastor today: A leader who feels genuinely interested in the emotional and spiritual life of his people, but at the same time, a passion to fill all the land with the glory of God until one day people from every tongue and nation worship the Lamb of God.

A pastor with this ministerial life balance is a leader who understands that the most important thing is the formation of Christ in the life of each member which results in reaching the multitudes.

Dear Pastor, focus on the people beyond the statistics. Developing people who love God must be your passion, and then they will imitate your passion and vision. And as you do this, you will form a cell church that is balanced and will glorify God.

David Jaramillo Burgos

¿Quién enferma, y yo no enfermo?

Feet of Clay

by Jeff Tunnell

Leaders may display their “feet of clay” to their followers, but our followers should never see us “in the shower”.

People are fine with knowing their leaders are human and face difficulties just as they do, but they also need to see a confidence in God showing that the leader has not moved away from the vision received. I like the moment when Moses is at the edge of the Red Sea and crying out to God in Exodus 14. The people are filled with fear as Pharaoh’s army approaches and wishes to return to the old ways of Egypt while Moses is trying to hold it together and saying to them, “Stand still and see the salvation of the Lord…” as he leads them into this new vision of freedom.

Here is how I see this occurring: Moses faces the people and tells them everything will be fine and reminds them of the vision even though he is also crying out to the Lord for help (feet of clay). Then he turns toward the Red Sea, looks up to God and says something like, “what is happening here, what am I supposed to do, where are YOU?” (total naked “in the shower” before God, but not exposing his shakiness to the people). Upon this, God gives the solution to the next step in fulfilling the vision, Moses comes out looking like a great leader and the people, even though aware of Moses’ clay-footed weakness, they are willing to follow him through the miraculous parting of the Red Sea.

You can be shaky in yourself, but don’t give the people your entire condition. Let God see your need, but hold the vision before the people as you let them know you struggle at times too. They will relate to you even more and willingly follow you as God provides your next step, miraculously!

Balancing a Positive Vision with Transparent Sharing

joel

by Joel Comiskey

A famous pastor in the U.S. was known for sharing his struggles. I once read an article in a well-known magazine about this pastor which said the reason people flocked to his church was because he “laid his soul bare” and shared exactly what was happening in his life. Then he crossed the line. He shared his “doubts” about God’s Word and whether hell even existed. Some might say he was simply being ‘transparent’ by sharing his doubts about God’s Word, but in reality, he had crossed the line and was now leading people astray by his doubtfulness.

A similar fine-line exists between transparency and maintaining an inspiring faith-filled vision. On one hand, it’s important for pastors to share struggles and let people see their humanity. Even Jesus wept (John 11:35). Often the best illustrations come from real struggles, so transparency is essential.

Yet, biblical, visionary pastors don’t share their doubts about God’s Word and His faithfulness to fulfill His promises. Rather, they inspire people to expect great things from God and to attempt great things for God (Isaiah 54:2). They encourage leaders to press ahead and believe that God will come through. They take advantage of public preaching, staff meetings, coaching sessions, and even personal leadership to proclaim God’s power and His ability to do all things. They help others to see the biblical base for cell ministry, which ultimately inspires people for the long-haul.

What about you? How do you maintain this delicate balance? How do you maintain a positive vision based on God’s Word, while continuing to share struggles?

The Word of God Sustains the Vision

mario

by Mario Vega

The vision has the ability to capture people. The vision is always challenging, exciting and inspiring. But, no matter how much the vision captures the people´s strength, over time it becomes a routine. The extraordinary for many, becomes ordinary for those who live it.

Under such conditions, the only thing that is capable of sustaining the vision is the Word of God. It is the spiritual food that sustains Christians in pursuit of their ideals. Human emotions are always up and down. They are precisely emotions because they vary from day to day. But a vision requires a sustained effort extending over mood changes.

That can only be accomplished by the Word of God. That’s the difference between those who had great visions and then lost them, and those who have them and hold them until they are fulfilled. So, it is not enough to be a great visionary, you also need to be a connoisseur of the Word of God.

The difference between a vision that withers and another one that comes true is the ability of the man of God to feed it with the Word of God. People cannot live on emotions alone; they need to be nourished with the constant teaching of the Bible.

Why Cell Ministry?

steve

by Steve Cordle

“Why?” It’s one of a child’s favorite questions. When asked to do something (especially something they don’t like), children want to know the reason behind the request. Have you noticed that adults are the same? When we know why we are to do something, we can persevere even when the going gets tough.

So why do cell-based ministry? If our motivation is numerical growth, to be trendy, or to copy another church, we will most likely quit. Those reasons are not sufficient to overcome the barriers.

When our church made the switch to a cell-based ministry more than a decade ago, not everyone was pleased. In fact, 30 people left the church. That wasn’t what I was hoping for.

However, I was determined to press forward because I was convinced that cell-based ministry was the best way to make disciples who make disciples in the New Testament mold.

Because I had dug deep into the scriptures and studied cell ministry ahead of time, I was able to answer the many questions from people about what we were doing and why.

Today our church is much larger and spiritually mature than it was 11 years ago. I know it wouldn’t look the same if I hadn’t started with a foundation of “Why”.
