What is your plan?

When I am talking with leaders about preparing groups to multiply, we will often look at the example Jesus set for us. How did Jesus raise up new leaders in His small group? He invited twelve men to follow Him, instructed and modeled the life of a disciple, and then sent them out to do as He had shown them. Throughout the New Testament we read about the effectiveness of His plan to reach the world by beginning with just twelve.

In his classic book, Master Plan of Evangelism, Robert Coleman writes, “The ultimate goal of Jesus for His disciples was that His life be reproduced in them and through them into the lives of others. The fact that the group of men He led was small made little difference. If they were adequately trained, they would produce lives which would be like theirs. Lives like these would produce the same kind of fruit until Jesus could envision the whole world hearing His message.”

We ask our leaders to always be in the process of developing members into leaders. Our cultural context (near a military training base) dictates a constant flow of new people through dGroups. This necessitates open groups and sometimes groups that grow numerically very quickly! The cell model is perfect in these circumstances, not only because it was started by the Perfect One, but because it is designed to get everyone involved and engaged right away.

One of the ways we develop members into leaders is what Coleman calls “delegation” or giving out an assignment. This week, in the group that I lead, I asked one member to lead our Welcome activity and another the Word portion. This enabled me to sit back and be even more attentive to how the Spirit was moving. The Lord gave me eyes to see how He is working in each of the women to have more of His character and love reflected in them. By God’s power and grace, these lives will produce the fruit of more of the world hearing His message.

How do you encourage your leaders to reproduce themselves into their members?

  • Very interesting point of view. As leaders we are leading people somewhere. That implies we have already visited the future ourselves.

Modeling life styles is therefore a must. The challenge therefore is for the leader them-self to have the correct picture of what must be in the area they lead, otherwise we multiply the wrong traits!

Delegation is apparently the key aspect of leadership development
