Numerical and Spiritual Growth

When we talk about cell multiplication, I think both quantity and quality are necessary to consider.  Within the discussion, setting goals for increasing and improving is essential. When we set realistic numerical goals, we tend to work more diligently, giving care and coaching in order to increase the quality of group life.

While numbers are not the only indicators of group health and growth, they can tell an important story.  The term “leading indicator” is often used in the financial arena as something that can help point toward, or indicate, a future event.  I believe that numerical statistics can be leading indicators for a group multiplying or dying.

For instance, a group that has grown in number, with members participating in a training track, is likely headed for multiplication sooner than later.  A coach can continue to prepare the leader for that inevitable future.  Conversely, a group with declining attendance or a sporadic meeting schedule is likely to die.

Leading indicators of numerical growth tell one part of the story.  But the quality of that growth is important to look at as well.  Joel Comiskey quotes Werner Knielsel in his most recent book, Myths & Truths of the Cell Church as saying “Then multiplication depends also on whether the individual cell members are in a healthy process of discipleship.”

Asking diagnostic questions of the group, commitment to outreach and the fruit of it, preparation of a new leader/disciple-maker, evidence of spiritual growth, etc.  There are also many wonderful assessment tools available to help examine group readiness.

The balance of setting realistic numerical goals and then providing the leadership and coaching toward meeting those in a healthy way leads to both numerical and spiritual growth.

  • Very well balanced article. I like the emphasis on both spiritual and numerical growth. Seems like some people think you only need to focus on one but you have stated very well that both are needed. At our church I have been overseeing Small Groups for the past 7 months and am still refining the “training track” which you referred to. It would be great to hear about some of the training tracks churches have used effectively with people when they start off as an assistant leader/apprentice. Thanks for the article Liz!

  • Thanks for taking time to share your thoughts, Andrew. I, too, would love to hear from readers about some the training tracks that have worked in their church contexts.

Blessings to you as you follow the Lord’s lead to expand His Kingdom!
