Factors to Consider When Setting Goals

Goals should be challenging enough so that you feel rewarded when they are fulfilled. The balance between challenge and reward varies according to the particular church and context.

When the Elim church made its transition to the cell model, it was already a vigorous church that had reached its first three thousand members. The church growth at that time allowed Elim to have enough available people who were willing to lead cell groups. In the beginning, the goals were very aggressive. We sought to achieve one hundred percent growth every three months.100% growth every three months sounds presumptuous, but I will not forget the quarter from January to March of 1989 when the growth was 120%. The growth rate was extremely high, but we were also living during the hardest years of the civil war and the need for leadership was great–as well as the harvest of souls.

Later on, the goal was changed to 100% growth in one year. That goal still sounds pretty ambitious, but it was feasible because of the ripe conditions in El Salvador. Today, our churches are free to set their own goals according to their own situation, but we do evaluate their progress with the same measurements.

The lesson from all this is that goals should be set according to the characteristics of each city and church. Yet, they also must be challenging enough to create a sense of reward when they are fulfilled.
