It was a Sunday morning in 1989. My wife and I had been praying and planning for this day for a decade. We stood in the parking lot of the day care center wondering if anyone would come to the first gathering of a new church. By 10:30 a.m. cars started coming in. They kept coming…and coming! 165 people came. 89% of them were unchurched before that morning.
The service was unimpressive by most church standards. The singing wasn’t dynamic. No one knew any church songs. The setting wasn’t fancy. It was a day care center. No one could follow along in a Bible. They didn’t own one.
When I stood to speak I simply said, “I don’t have much to offer you. I have no money. I have no members. I have no property. All I have is a dream. It is a dream that asks, ‘What If.’ ‘What if what happened in the first century church happened again in our lifetime? What if a group of people in this century stripped away the bureaucracy, the politics and the programming that tends to characterize modern churches and just focused on community with God and one another? What if they did it like the early church did; i.e. meeting in large groups to celebrate and in homes to connect with each other and their neighbors.’ I briefly described Acts 2:42-47 to them and simply asked, “What if we could do that again?”
It’s 22 years later. I have just come from a room with about 100 people in it. Most of them were unchurched before tonight. One of our 100+ cell groups brought them. This time I didn’t say we don’t have any members. We do. More than two thousand in fact. 60% of whom were unchurched before coming to us. I asked them the same question I asked so long ago; “What if we stayed committed to “doing church” the way the early church did?”
As I sit there and type these words, I find myself wondering if we will reach the known world in our lifetime like the 1st century church did? The honest answer is, I don’t know. But what if…

La Célula y La Celebración

Era una mañana de un domingo en 1989. Mi esposa y yo habamos estado orando y planeando este da desde hace una década. Nos quedamos en el estacionamiento del centro de cuidado y me preguntaba si alguien vendra a la primera reunión de la nueva iglesia. A las 10:30 am empezaron a llegar los autos. Ellos seguan llegando… y llegando! 165 personas vinieron. 89% de ellos no tenan iglesia antes de esa mañana.
El servicio era impresionante para los estándares de la mayora de la iglesia. El canto no era dinámico. Nadie saba las canciones de la iglesia. El escenario no era de lujo. Era un centro de cuidado. Nadie poda seguir la lectura Bblica. No tenan una.
Cuando me paré a hablar simplemente dije: “No tengo mucho que ofrecerte. No tengo dinero. No Tengo miembros. No tengo ninguna propiedad”. Todo lo que tengo es un sueño. Es un sueño que se pregunta, ‘¿Qué tal si? “”¿Qué tal si ocurre lo que paso en la iglesia del primer siglo de nuevo en nuestra vida? ¿Qué tal si un grupo de personas en este siglo, se despoja de la burocracia, la poltica y la programación que tiende a caracterizar a las iglesias modernas y se centra sólo en la comunidad con Dios y con los demás ?¿Qué pasa si lo hicieron como hizo la iglesia primitiva, por ejemplo, reunión en grandes grupos para celebrar y en los hogares se conecten entre s y con sus vecinos?”. Que se describen brevemente Hechos 2:42-47 a ellos y simplemente pregunto: “¿Y si pudiéramos hacer eso de nuevo?”
Es 22 años más tarde. Acabo de llegar de una habitación con cerca de 100 personas. La mayora de ellos iban a la iglesia antes de esta noche. Uno de nuestros más de 100 grupos de células los trajo. Esta vez yo no he dicho que no tiene ningún miembro. Lo hacemos. Más de dos mil de hecho. 60% de los cuales iban a la iglesia antes de venir a nosotros. Yo les hice la misma pregunta me preguntó hace mucho tiempo: “¿Qué pasa si nos quedamos comprometidos a” hacer iglesia “el camino hizo la iglesia primitiva?”
Mientras me siento all y escribo estas palabras, me pregunto si vamos a llegar a todo el mundo conociendo nuestra vida como en el primer siglo en la Iglesia La respuesta honesta es que no lo sé. Pero ¿y si? …

This post begs 2 questions (at least from me). First, how did you bring together 165 unchurched people in 1989? Then second, how would you do this again in 2012?
