What is Family For?

There’s an old saying that when you marry a woman, you also marry her family. When we become followers of Jesus, we also get a family in the deal: the family of God! All those who have God as their heavenly father are now your brothers and sisters. This Family is called “the Church.”

The church family is expressed in several ways. I like to think of the cell group immediate family – they know the details about what’s happening in your life, and you know them well. Then, on the weekend, all the immediate families gather for a family reunion – that’s the extended family. You may not know everyone in the worship service, but you know they are part of your family.
Of course, there are the family members belonging to different local churches scattered around the city and the world.

A few ways to live out the truth that church is family include:

  • Be open to midnight calls. Rom. 12:10 says “Be devoted to one another in love.” Many versions say “in brotherly love…” So, if your brother called you at midnight, you’d take the call wouldn’t you? Who can you call at midnight? We need to go beyond politeness and press in with a few people who can inconvenience us and we them. What’s a family for?
  • Commit to imperfect people. One guy said “I love the people in my group, don’t like everyone, but I love everyone.” Some of the people in his group rubbed him the wrong way at times. He wouldn’t naturally choose to hang out with them. But he was committed to them, because family is that way. (And God was doing powerful things in that group!). Family is not a collection of people who have similar tastes and like each other, it is a people who love and are committed to one another. Romans 12:16, says, “Live in harmony with one another. Do not be proud, but be willing to associate with people of low position. Do not be conceited.” None of us can think we’re too good, or shouldn’t be bothered with others who aren’t as cool, smart, socially gifted as us. This is about family; not convenience!
  • Commit to meeting needs. In a healthy family members care for one another. Romans 12:13 says “Share with the Lord’s people who are in need. Practice hospitality”

In God’s family we serve each other, watch out for one another. This will move us from beyond just going to meetings to being truly connected.

  • Comprométete a personas imperfectas.
