Guard and Guide Your Families

Inland Christian Center’s Founding Pastor, Leonard F. Fox, Sr. passed to Jesus early Saturday morning, April 7, 2012. Located in San Bernardino, California, Pastor Fox’s ministry was instrumental in birthing Big Bear Christian Center, where I have served Jesus since 1971. At my Ordination service in 1982, Pastor Leonard Fox, spoke these words to me, “Remember this as you enter ministry today, strong couples lead to strong marriages, strong marriages to strong families, and strong families lead to strong churches.”

Pastor Fox’s nuclear family of six, boasts two pastors and one missionary that have trained more than 200 pastors and leaders worldwide. His grandson, Zachary Fox has recently become pastor of the church, succeeding his father Pastor Steven Fox (deceased). Every afternoon while the family was young, Leonard would call the children into the house where they would listen to the Bible on a record player. Then they would pray and discuss what they had heard. This family knows God and His word!!

We shared children with a family in our congregation for over 17 years, as we raised our children. We napped, fed, changed diapers, coached and home-schooled our four and their 6 as though we were one nuclear family at times. By now, 8 of 10 have married and grandchildren are already learning the ways of Jesus in these 2nd generation homes. Proverbs 17:6 states, Grandchildren are the crowning glory of the aged; parents are the pride of their children. My interpretation: you know you’ve imparted the faith well, when it comes out in the grandchildren!

We must not neglect the nuclear family. Cell churches should make their support for families obvious, assisting parents in their God-given task of raising children who will not depart from the faith. Cells can offer much to the families in our congregations, such as friendships for our children as they mature in Christ. Church leaders be specific in supporting the parents you serve, help them get their job done well.

  • Totally agree Sadly most churches preach about family but give no context where family can be lived out within the context of life in the church, giving no opportunity for family to be modelled and experientially supported this series is inspiring Thank you

  • Daphne,
Thanks for the encouragement. Your passion on this topic has inspired me as well. Keep shaping the kingdom of God; as it is in heaven, so let it be on earth!
