The final paragraph Joseph H. Hellerman’s book, “When the Church was a Family”:

“Jesus and His followers took their culture’s strong-group approach to family life, appropriated it as the preeminent social model for their local Christian communities, and lived with one another like Mediterranean brothers and sisters.  And the early Christians turned the world upside down. When the church was a family, the church was on fire.  May God help us recapture Jesus’ vision for authentic Christian community in our churches today.”

Just prior to this, Hellerman quotes Luke’s glowing description of the evangelistic power of the Jerusalem church in Acts 4:32-35:

“All the believers were one in heart and mind. No one claimed that any of their possessions was their own, but they shared everything they had. 33 With great power the apostles continued to testify to the resurrection of the Lord Jesus. And God’s grace was so powerfully at work in them all 34 that there were no needy persons among them. For from time to time those who owned land or houses sold them, brought the money from the sales 35 and put it at the apostles’ feet, and it was distributed to anyone who had need.”

I understand that this comes at the end of 229 pages of his work and much is said in the book that we do not have room for in a blog.  A point he makes and that I wish to bring today is this;  the church’s grace and power flowed out to the world around it BECAUSE they lived as FAMIILY in every way.  Social solidarity and sharing of material resources marked them as God’s people.   Much of the church’s credibility stemmed from the family values and behaviors that characterized that first Christian congregation.

How will we achieve this again in our generation?  How are you seeing this occur in your church?

La familia de Dios, nuestra necesidad

El párrafo final del libro de Joseph H. Hellerman: “Cuando la Iglesia era una familia”:

“Jesús y sus seguidores tomaron su fuerte cultura de grupo en el enfoque a la vida familiar, y lo apropiaron como el modelo por excelencia social de sus comunidades cristianas, y vivieron entre s como hermanos y hermanas del Mediterráneo. Y los primeros cristianos voltearon el mundo al revés. Cuando la iglesia era una familia, la iglesia estaba en llamas. Que Dios nos ayude a recuperar la visión de Jesús para la auténtica comunidad cristiana en nuestras iglesias hoy en da. ”

Justo antes de esto, Hellerman expresa una brillante descripción de Lucas acerca de la fuerza evangelizadora de la iglesia de Jerusalén en Hechos 4:32-35:

“4:32 Y la multitud de los que haban credo era de un corazón y un alma; y ninguno deca ser suyo propio nada de lo que posea, sino que tenan todas las cosas en común.
4:33 Y con gran poder los apóstoles daban testimonio de la resurrección del Señor Jesús, y abundante gracia era sobre todos ellos.
4:34 As que no haba entre ellos ningún necesitado; porque todos los que posean heredades o casas, las vendan, y traan el precio de lo vendido,
4:35 y lo ponan a los pies de los apóstoles; y se reparta a cada uno según su necesidad.”

Entiendo que esto llega al final de 229 páginas de su obra y mucho se dice en el libro que no tenemos espacio para poner en un blog. Un punto que hace y lo que deseo traer hoy es lo siguiente, la gracia de la iglesia y el poder fluyó hacia el mundo que los rodea, porque vivieron como una Familia en todos los sentidos. La solidaridad social y la distribución de los recursos materiales los marco como pueblo de Dios. Gran parte de la credibilidad de la Iglesia deriva de los valores familiares y los comportamientos que caracterizan a la primera congregación cristiana.

¿Cómo vamos a lograr esto otra vez en nuestra generación? ¿Cómo se está viendo que esto ocurra en su iglesia?

About seven years ago, I noticed a trend sweeping through the cell church world that deemphasized intergenerational/ family cells while promoting only gender specific cells (e.g., men, women, youth, children).

The source of this trend came from the International Charismatic Mission in Bogota, Colombia, which asked all of its associated churches to adopt (not adapt) its entire homogenous model. Thus, churches had to organize into four homogeneous categories; men, women, youth, or children. I began to hear of the marvels of gender specific cell groups from those churches who were a part of ICM.

I do believe gender specific cells have their place in the cell church. David Cho’s church (Yoido Full Gospel Church) has approximately 25,000 cells, of which 70% are women’s cells.Ralph Neighbour has often talked about starting family cells (i.e., intergenerational cells) that would eventually spawn off male and female gender specific cells.I personally believe that men’s cells are great. I just started one, in fact. Women’s cells are also marvelous. My wife leads on. The danger is rigidly promoting only one type and then saying it’s the secret to success. What about the family?

Dividing strictly into men’s groups or women’s groups, while deleting intergenerational family cells is not a good idea. The family in many cultures around the world is rapidly deteriorating. The great need today is for couples to learn how to work together as a team. Husbands and wives are already separated enough. Should we add to this?

Family cells help the couple to learn together. I like the example of the Elim church in San Salvador. Their cells are primarily family oriented. Elim understands that the key to their amazing success is hard work, planning, evangelism, and prayer, rather than homogeneity. They major on the main things and grow stronger as a result.

I believe that healthy cell ministry will emphasize intergenerational cell groups, while allowing for gender specific cells to flow naturally as groups multiply. What do you think?

La Necesidad de Células Familiares

Hace siete años, note una tendencia que esta barriendo a través del mundo de la iglesia celular que restó importancias intergeneracionales/células familiares, mientras que se promocionaba sólo las células especficas por género (por ejemplo, hombres, mujeres, jóvenes, niños).

El origen de esta tendencia provino de la Misión Carismática Internacional en Bogotá, Colombia, que pidió a todos sus iglesias asociadas que adoptaran (no adaptar) su modelo homogéneo. Por lo tanto, las iglesias tuvieron que organizarse en cuatro categoras homogéneas, hombres, mujeres, jóvenes o niños. Empecé a or hablar de las maravillas de los grupos celulares por género especficos de esas iglesias que formaban parte de ICM.

Yo creo que las células especficas por género tienen su lugar en la iglesia celular. La iglesia de David Cho (Yoido Full Gospel Church) cuenta con alrededor de 25.000 células, de los cuales 70% son células de mujeres. I believe that one key to multiplication is the host family. Hosts are in a advantageous position to win friends and neighbors to the cell group since the cell meets at their house. This is an advantage that none of the other cell members have.

For this reason, the ministry of the host is critical for achieving the goal of multiplication. Yet, the influence of the host can be annulled when things are not going well in the family. People are hesitant to attend the cell when they perceive problems in the home. They began to excuse themselves from attending when the real reason is the cell atmosphere.

I would go so far as to say that the health of the host family determines the health of the cell. Since the church is the family, people need to see Christ’s love and power demonstrated in real-life families. Family health characterizes the gospel. This is why it is important that churches continue to teach on how to strengthen the family in order to produce healthy relationships between parents and children, couples, and even how the family should relate to the neighborhood.

People believe a lot more in what they see, rather than what they hear, and therefore all the effort we invest in educating and strengthening Christian families (especially the host families) will never be too much.

La familia de los anfitriones.

Sin duda que la familia anfitriona de una célula es clave para lograr la multiplicación. Los anfitriones se encuentran en una posición de fortaleza pues su influencia sobre sus amigos tiene como centro su casa, donde se realiza la célula. Esta es una ventaja que no tiene ninguno de los otros miembros de la célula.

Por ello, el trabajo de los anfitriones es esencial para alcanzar las metas de multiplicación. Pero, esa influencia, puede ser anulada cuando las cosas no marchan bien en la familia. Las personas son muy susceptibles a los problemas que perciben en los hogares y eso les da la excusa perfecta para no asistir más a una célula.

La salud de la familia de los anfitriones determina la salud de la célula. El tema de la familia ha sido trabajado bastante por las iglesias cristianas. Es uno de los énfasis que caracterizan al evangelio. No obstante, cualquier esfuerzo que se haga nunca estará de más. Por ello, es importante que las iglesias continúen trabajando en enseñanzas tales como el fortalecimiento de las relaciones entre padres e hijos. Las relaciones de pareja e incluso la manera de relacionarse de la familia con el vecindario.

Las personas creen mucho más a los hechos que a las palabras y, por ello, nunca será demasiado todo el esfuerzo que se invierta en instruir y fortalecer las familias cristianas especialmente la de los anfitriones.

One of the great leaders of Israel, Joshua, launched a challenge to the people: “If you think it is wrong to serve the Lord, choose today whom you will serve. Choose the gods your fathers worshiped on the other side of the river, or choose the gods of the Amorites in whose land you are living. But as for me and my family, we will serve the Lord” (Joshua 24:15, NLV)

We see three key points in the decision of Joshua

1. Me: He took the leadership, initiative

2. My house: It involved a family

3. Serve: The home and serving the Lord only and sovereign.

Cell churches should assess the involvement of the heads of each household and make sure the their families are also involved.

When a cell group reaches out, it not only ministers to individuals but to entire families. In fact, only as entire families are reached for Jesus will the church achieve a solid, qualitative foundation.

Leaders are the key to making this happen. As leaders model family wholeness, they will exemplify this health to the rest of the church. Leader modeling is essential. Like Joshua, leaders must take the initiative and decide “as a family” to serve the Lord wholeheartedly.

Uno de los grandes lderes del pueblo de Israel, Josué, llega un momento de la historia que toma una decisión y lanza un gran desafo al pueblo: “Y si mal os parece servir a Jehová, escogeos hoy a quién sirváis; pero yo y mi casa serviremos a Jehová”.

Josué 24: 15

Tres puntos clave en la decisión de Josué:

1. Yo: El tomó el liderazgo, la iniciativa

2. Mi casa: Involucró a la familia

3. Serviremos: El y su casa sirviendo al Señor único y soberano.

Una iglesia que está estructurada por un sistema celular deberá evaluar que tan involucrados están los cabezas de cada hogar y que tanto están involucrado a sus familias.

Cuando una célula apunta no solo alcanzar individuos, sino familias enteras lograrán poner bases sólidas en el crecimiento cualitativo de la iglesia en general. Si bien es cierto, todos ó por lo menos la gran mayora anhela que la iglesia crezca, esta aspiración se cumplirá integralmente cuando lideres toman decisiones y modelan con el ejemplo mostrando a la familia en el servicio al Señor.

Los modelos son importantes, el liderazgo debe tomar iniciativas y decidir tal como vemos en el ejemplo de Josué, involucrándose él y toda su familia en el servicio a Jehová.

A critical key to having healthy cells is having healthy nuclear families! Cells will never rise to ‘good health’ if husband, wife, and children are in disarray. The early church required that house church elders first be good administrators of their own families. Otherwise, how could they take care of the church of God? (1 Timothy 3:1-7.)

The health and well-being of families of cell members must be a ‘top priority’ of any cell that wishes to enjoy good health, and ‘fruit’ that results from such good health. This principle outranks the priority of outreach and any other cell group activity.

Group members must be encouraged to first look-out for the well being of their own families. No one in the group should be loaded-up with group responsibilities unless their families are in order. This rule must first be modeled by the facilitator of the group.

Remember: Nuclear family issues always come before cell family life and business. Yes, at times, important situations at home will prevent cell participation by a member (including the leader!). When this happens in your group, don’t panic – its ok!

Células saludables provienen de familias saludables

Una clave fundamental para tener grupos celulares sanos es tener ¡núcleos familiares sanos! Las células no se levantará a una “buena salud” si el esposo, la esposa y los niños están en desorden. La iglesia primitiva requera que el hogar/iglesia de los ancianos, primero que sean buenos administradores de sus propias familias. De lo contrario, ¿cómo iban a cuidar de la iglesia de Dios? (1 Timoteo 3:1-7).

La salud y el bienestar de las familias de los miembros del grupo celular deben ser una ‘prioridad’ para cualquier grupo celular que se desea disfrutar de buena salud, y «fruto» que resulta de tan buena salud. Este principio es mejor que la prioridad de difusión y cualquier otra actividad del grupo celular.

Los miembros del grupo se deben alentar a la primera observación para el bienestar de sus propias familias. Nadie en el grupo debe ser cargado con responsabilidades del grupo a menos que sus familias estén en orden. Esta regla debe ser modelada primero por el facilitador del grupo.

Recuerde: los problemas del núcleo familiar siempre vienen antes de la familia celular y los negocios. S, a veces, las situaciones importantes en casa impedirán la participación de un miembro en el Grupo Celular (¡incluyendo el lder!). Cuando esto pase en su grupo, no se preocupe – ¡Esta bien!
