Children Cells

by Mario Vega

When we first started our cell work, we really weren’t focused on ministry to children. We simply needed someone to take of the children, while the adult cell gathered together. The children were normally taken to another area of the host house where somebody entertained the children. Usually, the responsibility was delegated to another child barely older than the rest of the children present. We basically just hoped that the person responsible would “make it happen.” We left the children “at the mercy” of this untrained volunteer.

Years later I started to reflect on this serious lapse in our cell system. I realized that children were people with real needs, and it was not possible to continue just entertaining them for an hour. Without knowing that other cell churches practiced cells for children, I dedicated myself to design a more effective cell model for children. I did not know I was re-inventing the wheel.

Once God gave me an initial plan, I gathered the leaders together in a training conference on children’s cells that lasted a couple weeks. I defined the content we wanted to see in each children’s cell group as well as the requirements for leaders. I then taught the first week’s training.

We laid down the following components:

  • Children’s cell leaders must be called.
  • Children’s cell leaders need to receive training. We proceeded to lay out the specific training steps.
  • Children’s cell leaders should receive the cell lessons. We then wrote out the cell lessons for children’s cells which correspond to the social reality of our Salvadoran culture.

We started the children’s work with these components and saw amazing fruit. Today, thanks to the support of the brothers and sisters, we are seeing a noticeable difference in our children’s ministry.

At Elim we take our children’s work seriously and, in fact, it takes three times longer to train a children’s cell leader than to train an adult cell leader!

As I look back years later, I realize that other cell churches have also developed wonderful ministry for children through the cell system. I am grateful that God is stirring his worldwide church to take seriously the needs of children, prioritize their evangelism, and to make clear steps to disciple them through the cell structure.

A Strategic Opportunity

Those who are interested in fulfilling the Great Commission will do well to make a deliberate effort to reach children. Studies of the U.S. church reveal up to 85% of Christians came to faith in Christ before the age of 18. That makes the childhood years the most strategic evangelistic opportunity. Children are also very open and receptive to the faith.

Our church uses the weekend worship time as the primary setting for our children’s work. As the adults worship, the children have a time of worship and then go to their groups.

However, neighborhood children’s cells can be very strategic for reaching children whose parents may not be willing to take their children to church on a weekend. If the cell is located a few doors down at a trusted neighbor’s house, the barrier for the children to attend is gone.

One practical note: regardless of whether the cell is in the neighborhood or at a weekend worship service, it is important to follow the “2 adult” rule when working with children. That is, no adult should be working alone with children. This is for the protection of both the children and the adults. We might not like to believe child abuse could ever happen near us, but no one wants to try to sort out conflicting accounts of what happened in the other room.

Ministry to children is a great opportunity to influence a generation and fulfill the Great Commission.

Mobilizing the Children

daphne

Until Christian parents are empowered to disciple, church focus generally is toward their children instead of being turned outward. The parable of the lost sheep in Matthew 18 is about children. The 99 are secure while the shepherd goes after the lost one because “it is not the will of your Father in heaven that ONE of these little ones should perish” (v.14). If we really desire to do the will of the Father we MUST go after His lost little ones.

There is a growing awareness of the 4/14 window, the demographic group from age four to fourteen years old. This age window is the most open and receptive to every form of spiritual and developmental input (http://4to14window.com/introduction). Can the cell church movement ignore this awakening?

Children’s cells can be mobilized on this rescue mission, in the community where the children and their families live, mobilized by any cell or ministry so long as child protection issues are clearly addressed.

Children’s ministry is a great opportunity to transition into children’s cells. These bring peer group dynamics and adults who “facilitate,” can transition to peer led cells by children who are experientially trained, resourced, and supported. They also provide a place where children with no home discipleship can grow and learn. A great way to integrate these children AND reach their families is for a Christian family to “adopt” them, reach out to their family, and care for them within the context of the church– especially in celebration with adults. This prevents losing the powerful dynamic of worshipping in the context of family.

A child evangelist is a child who is an evangelist! We cannot raise another generation of inward looking Christians. They can run cells in their schools, homes, streets etc. Children love running clubs… that natural ability can be mobilized for the kingdom.

Sadly the majority of material for children’s ministry has virtually no envisioning or training for evangelism and mission. Remember that the “witness” section of a cell is for children as well. I have a dream that parents raise soldiers (disciples) and bring those soldiers (children) to the body of Christ which forms them into an army (cell group) to win the lost. The 4 /14 window is waiting. Children’s cells are an important answer.

The 1st Children’s Bible

jeff

by Jeff Tunnell

Parental examples are God’s directive. The Scriptures I listed last week were not exhaustive by any means and a comment from blog reader Oscar Coronado reminded us to examine Deuteronomy 6. Please open your Bible to this passage and note the following instructions that apply to you as a believer and follower of God and His word:

  • vs. 2 your life will touch 3 generations simultaneously
  • vss. 5-6 this love for God and His words must be in you first
  • vss. 7-9 then will you be able to teach and model them to your children
  • vss. 10-19 blessing and possession of the land are the results
  • vs. 20 your children will ask and examine the truth of your life (not just your words)
  • vs. 21 your words will confirm the truth of your example

The principles of this passage tell us that you are the first Bible that your children read. Your example and demonstration of loving God and following His ways are the most powerful training event in history! If you are not yet a parent, or if your own children are grown and living on their own, please offer the open book of your life in God to the children in your cell families.

Welcoming Children into the Family of God

joel

by Joel Comiskey

As I travel around the country, I rejoice to hear stories of children following Jesus because of the godly example of their parents. Pastors and leaders agree that the parents first ministry is their children. Paul tells parents to “bring them up in the training and instruction of the Lord” (Ephesians 6:4). There’s one huge problem. What about the children who don’t have godly parents? How will they find Jesus?

The answer is that God has established the church to be an alternative family. The church also has brothers, sisters, and spiritual parents (1 John 2:12-14). Paul says in Ephesians,”For this reason I kneel before the Father, from whom his whole family in heaven and on earth derives its name” (Ephesians 3:14-15). Earlier in Ephesians, Paul talks about the church as “God’s household” (2:19).

The early church understood their role in ministering to the children. Some of the early historical writings about the ministry of house churches declare that these house churches “welcomed ragamuffin children” and as an extended family evangelized, taught, and cared for the neglected and orphaned children (A Women’s Place: House Churches In Earliest Christianity, pp. 76-78, kindle edition).

In the cell church today, many non-Christian children will chiefly be discipled in the household of God, the church of the living God. Intergenerational cell groups, after-school cell groups, children’s church on Sunday will all contribute to the team effort in reaching out to children and welcoming them as part of God’s family. In this sense, the church today is an extended family, just like the primitive church of the New Testament period.

¿Cómo van a encontrar a Cristo?
