The Cell as First Aid for the Needy

When a church is responsible for tens of thousands of people, it is extremely difficult for the pastor to counsel each person. Personally, counseling is one of the things I enjoy most. I counsel several people each day, but it is humanly impossible for me to counsel all the members.

But the beauty of the cell model is that it provides counseling for ordinary people, regardless of how numerous. Obviously, there are different levels of assistance. When a person has an immediate need, the place to go is the cell. In the cell a member can find guidance, advice or consolation from the leader or other cell members. Many difficulties can be solved at this level.

Often, a person simply needs a listening ear. They really aren’t looking for advice. They simply want to be heard. To help a person like this, a fellow cell member simply needs a willing, listening ear, and the commitment to keep matters confidential. No special counseling skill is required at this level.

Prayer is another important resource in the cell. People know that receiving prayer from a group of believers is a powerful tool to solve their difficulties. Prayer encourages them, comforts them, gives them strength and inspires them. These elements are simple but very effective in helping people. Of course there will be situations that need more specialized help, but the big advantage is that the cell is not an isolated island. The cell belongs to a system where there are greater resources, and it is not complicated to refer people to counselors within the cell system.
