The Power of the Flock

Cesar Milan is known as “the Dog Whisperer.” On his U.S.-based TV show he works with dogs who have behavioral problems others can’t solve.

One of the ways he rehabilitates dysfunctional dogs is by using the “Power of the Pack”. He brings the needy dog to live with him and his large group (pack) of well-adjusted dogs. He observes that dogs best learn how to behave through the example and influence of other dogs in a pack.

If you’ll forgive the stretch, perhaps we could think of cell ministry as leveraging the “Power of the Flock”. God brings healing to broken people through the example and influence of a Christ-centered community, such as a cell group. As broken people do life with other followers of Jesus, they will absorb how to deal with stress, love their spouses, handle temptation and other essentials of living for Jesus. Simply living in authentic Christ-centered community is a healing and transformational experience.

I have seen troubled couples become stable by watching how other couples in their group treat one another and handle differences. (That accomplishes more than a bunch of marriage counseling!) People learn how to show grace to others then they experience it from other group members. I have seen people start tithing simply because they hear fellow group members’ experience with obeying God in this way. We influence each other!

In order for the power of the flock to be effective, however, the group must have enough health flowing to influence the broken, and not the other way around. If there are several significantly broken people in one group, there may not be enough community health to overcome the dysfunctions.

One of our church’s most effective group leaders (and coach) was once leading a group in which there were several people with life-controlling problems. Though she spent countless hours individually ministering to them, the result was that the group disbanded. That is because the woundedness level of those individuals kept the group from having an outward focus, and any new people who did visit the group did not perceive it as a life-giving community. And the weight of those needs eventually wore out the leader.

When the flock is healthy (not perfect), it has tremendous capacity for healing simply by inviting others into their community.

How have you seen the power of a healthy community at work in bringing healing to the broken?
