Finding “a person of peace” isn’t difficult, although many Christians I know do not have one unsaved friend. Even though they’re surrounded by unchurched people at their workplace and in their community, they choose to spend all their time with people like themselves … Christians already living in community. I find this incredibly sad, and not just for the people who want and need Christ in the world. I’m also sad for the Christian who hasn’t yet discovered the most exciting and fun part of being a follower of Christ! Here’s a few principles to pass along to friends who know Christ but don’t have a clue as to how to go about meeting a person of peace:

Principle #1: Leverage an interest or hobby to find persons of peace

I enjoy a couple of hobbies, one of which is pen making. It’s a unique hobby that requires hours of patience with a half-dozen woodworking tools. Just like Jesus instructed the disciples in Luke 9, I drove to a guy’s house empty-handed every Saturday for over a year to learn how to take blocks of material and turn them into one-of-a-kind writing instruments. I had no money for shop equipment at the time, and just enough of a budget for fuel and the materials with which to make a pen each week.

Over the course of that year, my mentor and I enjoyed many hours together. I discovered that my pen-making mentor considered himself a “God-loving ex-Catholic” in dire need of fellowship and encouragement. I was introduced to three of his close friends, his son, his wife, and two business contacts. And I have prayed for and with each of these people at one time or another for financial, physical, or emotional breakthroughs.

Principle #2: Humbly ask persons of peace to serve you.

Western Christians quickly become cocooned after just a year or two after conversion. They’re living differently now, “going to church” each Sunday, and have a new set of friends that live with similar values. Truthfully, they don’t need the help of a person of peace because they get all their needs met within the Christian community. So breaking out of one’s comfy cocoon is important for success, but only to the extent that the believer asks the person of peace for help with something important.

In Luke 9, the disciples need food and shelter. My pen making lessons weren’t nearly as important in comparison. However, my new home office renovation was of critical importance to me. So, I asked my pen making mentor to drive 45 minutes from home for three weekends straight to help me build a closet into the room and work on my project and I asked his son, who owned a pickup truck, to come along and help me get the wood home from the lumber yard. And you know what he and his son said when they left that weekend, exhausted and covered in sawdust? “Thank you for asking me us help you. We really enjoyed it!”

To successfully find and engage a person of peace, you must share common ground with the person and remain humble enough to ask them to serve you. None of this is rocket science, but so few Christian’s with whom I connect understand it, so share this blog entry and get the word out.

Finding the Person of Peace

michael

By Michel Sove

1 Peter 3:15 (NIV) “But in your hearts set apart Christ as Lord. Always be prepared to give an answer to everyone who asks you to give the reason for the hope that you have. But do this with gentleness and respect”

Everywhere I go I go with the mindset that I am God’s ambassador. Everywhere I go I go with the expectation that the “Person of Peace” (those open to the Message of the Kingdom) may be present. But how do we find them; how will we know?

Let me tell you an amazing story I call the “Pete” story. One day after getting stirred by a message at Founders Week in Chicago, I went out into my town, Crown Point, Indiana, at the time. I was determined to find someone who would be open to the message.

I went to the local McDonalds and as I went in I prayed, “Lord , show me someone here who needs You in their life. Open a door of opportunity and I will walk through it as You lead.” As I sat there I saw a man with crutches sitting in the corner talking with a bunch of guys. The Lord impressed on me to refill his coffee when he needed it, so he wouldn’t have to hobble over for it. So as I saw him trying to get up for more coffee I brought the pot over to him, and that opened the door to introduce myself and meet Pete.

Day after day I went back to the same place at the same time and sure enough Pete was there sitting with the guys. After the guys left I would sit and talk with Pete and very quickly was able to share my story/testimony. He listened to me and gave me the name “preacher boy” from that day forward. Every day I would return and talk with Pete and share what God was doing in my life, asking him about his life and how I could pray for him.

Next week I will continue this story but for now I want to share some practical principles about finding the man or woman of peace.

Pray and go expecting – The harvest is plentiful but the workers are few. We need to be willing to go and represent Christ. As we go, we are to pray for eyes to see. Expect God to show you the man or woman of peace. He is not willing that any should perish.

Look for needs to meet – One of the greatest ways to see a door open for conversation is to meet a need. Look and listen and you’ll be amazed at all the potential opportunities to assist, encourage or pray for those around you.

Frequent the same places – People are creatures of habit and if you go to the same places at the same time you will begin to build relationships and know people by name.

Share your story – People are open and like to hear stories, so ask if you can tell your story. Your personal testimony is a powerful tool in God’s hands.

Ask how you can pray for them – People like to be prayed for, so ask how you can pray for them and the next time you see them ask about what you prayed for. This conversation opens many doors and shows you care.

I currently have three places I frequent and keep my eyes open for the man/woman of peace. Yes, I still frequent the McDonalds in town, I take walks in my neighborhood and I play golf seeking to meet people and get to know them by name. I’m praying daily for those I’ve met and watching for opportunities to share. Finding the person of peace is an exciting daily adventure. What ideas do you have?

The Person of Peace

jeff

by Jeff Tunnell

The church birthed in Philippi is a favorite for me. Two households (oikoses) provide the launching of a glorious and strong local church with which Paul will continue in relationship and sharing for the rest of his ministry!! Lydia responds to the gospel, her household is baptized, and then she opens her home to provide a base for evangelism in the city. Next stop, power encounter with the local demonic forces and JAIL for the apostles, with a surprise ending of the jailer’s family (oikos) following the same process of baptizing everyone and ministering to the apostles.

The kingdom of God accompanied the disciples and brought peace to these households. As they followed the command of Jesus to “go into the world making disciples”, He granted them peace to extend to those who would receive them and the message of salvation. We too must believe that HE will grant us this same peace to present to the households that welcome us today. As we watch for our Lydia, Jailer, and Cornelius types, God will lead us to homes which willingly accept gospel workers who bring good news! These homes will become the base for new cell ministry that reaches an entire oikos.

Pray as you go, look for the man of peace, walk through the door, extend the blessing!

Hechos 16

Jeff

Divine Appointments

joel

by Joel Comiskey

In Luke 9:1-6; 10:1-11, you’ll notice how Jesus told his teams of house church planters to look for a person of peace. In other words, Jesus asked his disciples to look for divine appointments. The phrase “peace to this house” was also used in the literature of that time period and described someone who was qualified to receive peace.

Jesus wanted his disciples to find people open to the gospel message. Anyone who accepted the messengers and their peace greeting also accepted the message of the coming kingdom. Who was supposed to receive the peace greeting? Most likely the disciples would win the head of the house. Then the conversion process would spread from there in ever widening circles, reaching its climax once the entire town had heard the kingdom message.

A person of peace is someone who God has sovereignly prepared to receive the gospel before you arrive. The essence of effective cell evangelism is finding those who God has already sovereignly prepared. We must remember that God wants to minister to new people more than we do, and he makes it happen. He often does this by opening the hearts of key people.

In the early church, God opened the heart of Cornelius to hear and respond to the gospel (Acts 10). God prepared Cornelius to receive the ministry of Peter. The same thing happened with the conversion of Lydia. Scripture says: “One of those listening was a woman named Lydia, a dealer in purple cloth from the city of Thyatira, who was a worshiper of God. The Lord opened her heart to respond to Paul’s message. When she and the members of her household were baptized, she invited us to her home. “If you consider me a believer in the Lord,” she said, “come and stay at my house.” And she persuaded us (Acts 16:14-15). The same thing happened with the jailer in Philippi (Acts 16:31-34). God used an earthquake to awaken him to the gospel. When planting new cells and cell churches, the key question is: “Where is God working?”

Pray for your oikos contact, watch God’s work in their lives, and then proactively reach out to them.

Citas Divinas

Early Christians and Mutual Care

Untitled Document

mario

By Mario Vega

The New Testament is crystal clear that the early Christians lived in intimate community. Part of that community involved love, encouragement, acceptance, and esteem for one another. Here are some excerpts of the Bible: "…that is, that you and I may be mutually encouraged by each other’s faith" (Romans 1:12) "Be devoted to one another in love. Honor one another above yourselves" (Romans 12:10-11). "Accept one another, then, just as Christ accepted you, in order to bring praise to God" (Romans 15:7).

It is important to notice in the above passages how many times "one another" is used. There are many more New Testament passages that insist on the idea that Christians should comfort, prefer, love, receive, and exhort "one another." The Christian life is a joint and plural effort; starting from the ministers who exercised their ministry as a team, to the members that met in the houses to care for one another.

The idea of passive Christians who only bring their offerings to hire a pastor that dedicates himself to comfort, edify and exhort other Christians did not exist. The tasks of evangelism, discipleship and mentoring belonged to every believer. This explains the explosive growth and roots that the early church developed in its first two centuries of existence.

Cell ministry today awakens each part of the body of Christ to fulfill his or her role as priests of the living God who are sent out to reconcile people for Jesus. We must once again rescue those New Testament values because Jesus initially gave them to the early church.
