John 4:34, Jesus said to them, “My food is to do the will of Him who sent Me, and to finish His work.”
Matthew 25:21, His lord said to him, ‘Well done, good and faithful servant; you were faithful over a few things, I will make you ruler over many things. Enter into the joy of your lord.’
2 Timothy 4:7, “I have fought the good fight, I have finished the race, I have kept the faith.”
Luke 14:25-35 gives us a teaching of Jesus on Discipleship which to many seems harsh. Simply, He teaches us that we should count the cost, decide to follow Him daily, and focus on finishing the work we started. His ‘work’ for us is to ‘make disciples as we are going on our way’.
Here is an expanded translation of Matthew 28:18-20 from Kenneth S. Wuest; And Jesus, having come, spoke to them, saying, There was given to me all authority in heaven and upon earth. Having gone on your way therefore, teach all the nations, making them your pupils, baptizing them into the Name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit, teaching them to be attending to carefully, holding firmly to, and observing all, whatever things I enjoined upon you. And behold, as for myself, with you I am all the days until the consummation of the age.
Jesus’ promise to accompany us, personally, to the very end is an enticing motivation! Do you see His companionship as conditional in this case? We focus on finishing the work He gave us, HE is with us as we do, and JOY is the result!
Our city is a vacation resort with work following the rotating seasons. This means we see the entire congregation change every five years or so. A few locals stay in the body here for more than 10 years, however, in general we must process disciples quickly, knowing they will be moving away soon. This dynamic is found in military towns as well, where assignments often move personnel within a couple of years.
Our goal is to make disciples in the cell church so they can stay close to Christ and His community of believers wherever He moves them. Preparing them to carry a cell vision is important too, as they may become missionaries in the place He takes them. Stay focused, finish the work, receive JOY!
