Hear and Obey Disciples, the Goal of the Cell Church

The goal of the cell church is to make disciples. That is not unique. Every church, no matter what its ministry philosophy, would say the same.  After all, Jesus gave us his marching orders in the Great Commission to “go make disciples of all nations”.

The difference is in the kind of disciple a cell church can create, and how they go about it.

Our church defines a disciple as one who hears and obeys Jesus. In verse 20 of the Great Commission Jesus says our disciple-making is to be marked by “teaching them to obey everything I have commanded you.”

By using the two expressions of celebration and cell the cell church can accomplish this goal well.

In the Celebration service we are shoulder to shoulder offering worship as a large group, and hearing biblical teaching, most often by the senior leader. This is hearing Jesus, and it is vital.

Then in the Cell we can specialize in application of what we have heard. We can discuss and ask questions about the teaching. But even more, we can challenge each other to act on what is says, and hold each other accountable the following week for how it went.

Of course, in the cell we can also practice more than the week’s message. We can also minister to one another with the gifts given by the Spirit, and live out the “one-another’s” of the New Testament by encouraging one another, sharing each others’ burdens, and so on. We can practice leadership, mobilize to meet needs in the community, and more.

“Hear and Obey” disciples are nurtured quite well in a properly focused two-wing cell church.

  • Thank you for a great + balanced perspective on how celebration service + cell should work together in the making of disciples!

  • I’m relatively new to the cell-church movement. How does this two-wing approach differ from a “traditional” church with a strong small-group ministry? Wouldn’t that be a two-wing approach as well?
