Our blog this month has had some excellent information on the Biblical approach to discipleship. A disciple is a learner and we have been seeing how the best learning takes place when people are involved in ministry, not just listening to a lecture. Jesus was constantly modeling, involving and discussing ministry with his disciples. His approach was so incredible that within just a few months of his training, the disciples were off in groups of two to preach the gospel.

Matthew 10:7-8 NIV – “As you go, preach this message: ‘The kingdom of heaven is near.’ Heal the sick, raise the dead, cleanse those who have leprosy, drive out demons. Freely you have received, freely give.”

How did they know how to do these things? They had seen Jesus do them. They had experienced his prayer support. They had already participated in similar ministry experiences. But this did not happen just with the “Twelve.” Luke 10 tells us that the seventy-two also had a successful and powerful ministry experience when they were sent out a few months later.

When I look at our present cell, I see the lady who was very uncomfortable with prayer. As she participated in the group, she learned to pray. Today she freely prays with and for people at work and with her family. I see the young man who was growing frustrated at his work, now praising God and openly loving his coworkers into a relationship with Jesus Christ. I see the two ladies who are ministering with children and God has given them a boldness and joy in serving. I see the wife of an addict comforting and encouraging the wife of a man who committed suicide.

None of these attended a “ministry” class; they learned how to minister by participation in the cell. How many classes or workshops would we have had to run to get these people prepared for ministry? Even at the end of the classroom training, how many of them would have gone out on their own to do ministry? My suspicion is that very few–if any of them–would have felt qualified and confident to serve as they are.

Don’t you marvel at the fact that the Twelve Disciples never questioned how they were going to preach, heal the sick, or cast out demons when they were sent out the first time? How did the seventy-two know what they were doing? They were not as close to Jesus as the Twelve yet they also went out in confidence. Today, it seems like too many believers in the American church are afraid to even witness to their peers because they don’t know what to say.

I have seen the changed lives and the increased confidence in ministry in our cell. What do you think? Are these examples of discipleship taking place in your cell?

Haciendo discpulos a través de la célula: una forma de vida más que un programa

Nuestro blog en este mes ha tenido excelente información sobre el enfoque bblico del discipulado. Un discpulo es un aprendiz y hemos estado viendo como se logra el mejor aprendizaje, cuando las personas están involucradas en el ministerio, no solo escuchando una conferencia. Jesús estaba constantemente modelando, participando y discutiendo el ministerio con sus discpulos. Su enfoque era tan increble que con tan sólo unos pocos meses de su entrenamiento, los discpulos se iban en grupos de dos a predicar el evangelio.

Mateo 10:7-8 RV – “Y yendo, predicad, diciendo: El reino de los cielos se ha acercado”.

Sanad enfermos, limpiad leprosos, resucitad muertos, echad fuera demonios; de gracia recibisteis, dad de gracia”

¿Cómo ellos saban el cómo hacer estas cosas? Haban visto a Jesús hacerlas. Haban experimentado su apoyo en la oración. Ellos ya haban participado en similares experiencias ministeriales. Pero ésto no ocurrió sólo con los “Doce”. Lucas 10 nos dice que los setenta y dos también tuvieron una poderosa y exitosa experiencia, cuando se enviaron unos meses más tarde.

Cuando miro a la célula actual, veo a la señora que estaba muy incómoda con la oración y al participar en el grupo aprendió a orar. Hoy ella libremente ora con y para las personas de su trabajo y con su familia. Veo al hombre joven que estaba creciendo frustado en su trabajo, alabando a Dios y amando abiertamente a sus compañeros en una relación con Jesucristo. Veo las dos señoras que están ministrando a los niños y Dios les ha dado una audacia y alegra en el servicio. Veo a la esposa de un adicto consolando y alentando a la esposa de un hombre que se suicidó.

Ninguno de ellos asistieron a una clase de “ministerio”, ellos aprendieron participando en la célula. ¿Cuántas clases o talleres hemos tenido que impartir para llegar a preparar a estas personas para el ministerio? Incluso al final de la formación en el aula, ¿cuántos de ellos se han ido por su cuenta para hacer el ministerio? Mi sospecha es que muy pocos – si alguno de ellos – se habra sentido cualificado y con confianza para servir como son.

¿No te maravilla el hecho que nunca los Doce Discpulos preguntaron cómo iban a predicar, sanar a los enfermos, o echar fuera demonios, cuando fueron enviados la primera vez? ¿Cómo los setenta y dos saban lo que estaban haciendo? No estaban tan cerca de Jesús como los Doce, sin embargo, también salieron con confianza. Hoy en da, parece que demasiados creyentes en la iglesia americana tienen miedo de testificar incluso a sus compañeros porque no saben qué decir.

Just last week during my Florida seminar at “Segadores de Vida,” I often referred to the cell as the mother’s womb. The cell, like the womb, nurtures new babies and prepares them for the outside world. A womb provides the necessary nutrients and atmosphere for a fully formed baby. However, we’ve all heard the horror stories of mothers who didn’t take care of themselves (e.g., drugs, smoking, poor diet, etc.) and caused premature or deformed babies.

I still teach that cells are leader breeders, but I’m now more cautious about giving birth to unhealthy babies. In the past, I’ve been guilty of multiplying premature births. I was so desirous of multiplication that I didn’t focus sufficiently on the health of the mother cell or the new baby. After seeing too many new cells die or languish with too few people, I now promote making healthier cell leaders. I now counsel churches to make sure future disciples are properly nourished and prepared in the cell womb. How? Let’s me mention four areas:

1. Community: It’s possible to multiply an unhealthy leader who doesn’t know how to relate to other people. This is especially true in the western world where relationships are often not prioritized. A future leader needs to be able to get along with others, esteem others better than himself, listen to people, and develop healthy relationships. The cell is the perfect environment for this to happen, but mother cell leaders need to ensure that future leaders are growing in community before they become cell leaders.
2. Priesthood of all believers: Does the future leader know what his or her gift is? The cell environment is the perfect place for future disciples-makers to understand their role in the body of Christ and to exercise their gifts. I won’t go into detail on this since I’ve written extensively about using the spiritual gifts in the cell in two books: “The Spirit-Filled Small Group” and “Discover.”
3. Group evangelism: If a future disciple has not experienced evangelism in the mother cell group, most likely he or she won’t practice it in the new group. The mother cell should provide the nutrient of group evangelism by praying for those without Christ, practicing outreach, meeting the needs of others, and envisioning group multiplication.
4. Team multiplication: New Testament leadership is always team leadership. After seeing too many failures with one person starting the cell, I’m convinced that the new group should have a team of at least two, if not more. I’ve grown to appreciate cell churches like Amor Viviente (Honduras) and Elim (El Salvador) who first develop a new team in the mother cell and then multiply a new cell with an entire team in place.

Some cell churches forget the vital place of the cell womb in the preparation of new leaders. They rightly focus on the cell training and coaching but forget that the cell plays a vital role in making disciples who make disciples–just like a healthy mother’s womb. Like Jesus who made quality disciples, God is calling cell churches to refocus on the quality of the new disciples to ensure future health and growth.

Desarrollando Discpulos sanos a través de la célula

Apenas la semana pasada durante mi seminario en Florida en “Segadores de Vida”, a menudo me refiero a la célula como el vientre de la madre. La célula, como el útero, nutre a los bebés recién nacidos y los prepara para venir al mundo. Una matriz proporciona los nutrientes necesarios y la atmósfera para que el bebé se forme completamente. Sin embargo, todos hemos escuchado las historias de horror de las madres que no cuidan de s mismas (por ejemplo, drogas, fumar, y mala alimentación, etc.) y causa bebés prematuros o deformados.

Evangelismo de grupo: Si un discpulo futuro no ha experimentado la evangelización en la célula madre, lo más probable es que él o ella no lo vaya a ejercer en el nuevo grupo. La célula madre debe proporcionar los nutrientes de la evangelización de grupo orando por aquellos que no tienen a Cristo, practicando el alcance a no cristianos, determinando como se puede satisfacer las necesidades de los demás, y previendo la multiplicación de grupo.

Multiplicación del equipo: el liderazgo del Nuevo Testamento es siempre el liderazgo de equipos. Después de ver demasiados fallos con una persona a partir de la célula, estoy convencido de que el nuevo grupo debe tener un equipo de al menos dos, si no más. He aprendido a apreciar las iglesias celulares como el Amor Viviente (Honduras) y Elim (El Salvador) quien desarrolló primero un nuevo equipo en la célula madre y luego multiplico una nueva célula con todo un equipo en su lugar.

Algunas iglesias celulares olvidan el papel vital de la matriz celular en la preparación de nuevos lderes. Con razón se centran en la formación de células y preparación, pero se olvidan de que la célula desempeña un papel vital en hacer discpulos que hacen discpulos – al igual que el vientre de una madre sana. Al igual que Jesús, que hizo discpulos de calidad, Dios está llamando a las iglesias celulares a que vuelvan a centrarse en la calidad de los nuevos discpulos para garantizar la salud y crecimiento en el futuro.

We live in the information age. Today more than ever we can do marvels with the touch of our fingers. We have instant access to information that was hard to locate just a few years ago. Yet in spite of the greater access we have today, people are not wiser than before. This is because there is a difference between information and knowledge. While information is the accumulation of data on a certain topic, knowledge is the ability to use that information correctly. While information requires only the storage capacity, knowledge requires the ability to analyze, critique, catalogue, and then to adopt a particular position.

A disciple of Jesus is not just a person who has accumulated lots of information. A disciple not only knows the facts about Jesus but is also able to internalize that information in his thinking, behavior and values. To be a disciple of Jesus means to think, live, and act like Jesus on a daily basis.

We have a lot of teaching about Jesus, but what is needed today are models that show us what it means to live like Jesus. The biblical model for making disciples is from person to person. It requires not only time but life itself. To truly make disciples, we must go beyond sharing information to a change in life-style and, even more importantly, a change of character. The best way to accomplish this is in the small group setting. The church must provide and promote the small group context, so that future disciples will be exposed to Christ-like character and then expected to become like their Savior.

Formando discpulos de Jesús

Vivimos en la época de la información. Hoy más que nunca tenemos con el toque de nuestros dedos acceso a información que años atrás nos hubiese tomado mucho más tiempo localizar.

Pero a pesar que el acceso a la información hoy es mayor, las personas no son más sabias que antes. Esto se debe a que existe una diferencia entre información y conocimiento. Mientras que la información es el cúmulo de datos sobre un tema, el conocimiento es la habilidad de utilizar esa información correctamente. Mientras que la información solo requiere la capacidad de acumulación, el conocimiento exige la capacidad de análisis, crtica, elaboración y adopción de posturas.

Un discpulo de Jesús no es solamente una persona que ha acumulado cierta información sobre su obra, enseñanzas y persona. Un discpulo es aquel que sabe de Jesús pero interioriza en su pensamiento, conducta y valores esa información. Ser discpulo de Jesús se sintetiza en parecerse a él cada da más.

Contrario a lo que la iglesia muchas veces hace de informarnos sobre Jesús, lo que se necesita son modelos que muestren lo que significa ser como Jesús. El modelo bblico para hacer discpulos es el mentoreo. De persona a persona. Requiere no solo tiempo sino la vida. Comparte no solo información sino un estilo de vida y, aún más, el carácter. Nada de esto se puede lograr mejor que en la iglesia, y mucho mejor aún, en las pequeñas reuniones en las casas. Cuando la iglesia provee modelos de seguimiento de Jesús es cuando los cristianos se ven expuestos a un desafo constante que les reta a ser como su Salvador.

Some things are more caught than taught.

How did you learn your heart/primary language? Because you grew up in a family which spoke it or were surrounded by a culture which spoke it. You absorbed that language from those around you.

So much of our relationship with Christ is caught rather than taught. Sure, we can learn from books and lessons, but we are shaped by people. My guess is that if I were to ask you about the deepest influences in your spiritual life, you would not name a book or sermon, but a person (or several). We are shaped by the believers around us.

Just as a baby who does not have any contact with other humans could not learn to speak, if we are not in relationship with other believers we will be severely stunted in our growth.

This is why God places us in the spiritual family called the Church. Read the final chapter of 1 Corinthians or Romans and see how Paul names believers he knows, calling them brothers and sisters.

In order to be effective at making disciples, a church needs to foster authentic relationships. That is what a cell church can excel at through cell groups.

Discipulado es relaciones

Algunas cosas son captadas y no enseñadas.

¿Cómo aprendió tu corazón el idioma principal? Fue debido a que creciste en una familia que lo hablaba o fueron rodeados por una cultura que lo hablaba. Usted absorbió ese lenguaje de quienes le rodeaban.

Gran parte de nuestra relación con Cristo es captada en vez de enseñada. Claro que podemos aprender de los libros y enseñanzas, pero somos moldeados por personas. Mi pensamiento es que si yo te preguntara acerca de las más profundas influencias en tu vida espiritual, tu no nombraras un libro o un sermón, sino una persona o varias. Estamos moldeados por creyentes que nos rodean.

Al igual que un bebé que no tiene ningún contacto con otros seres humanos no puede aprender a hablar, si no estamos en relación con otros creyentes seremos severamente atrofiados en nuestro crecimiento.

Por eso es que Dios nos coloca en la familia espiritual llamada Iglesia. Lea el captulo final de 1ra Corintios o la carta a los Romanos y vea cómo Pablo nombra a los creyentes que conoce; les llama hermanos y hermanas.

En orden de ser eficaces en hacer discpulos la iglesia tiene que promover relaciones auténticas. Es por eso que la iglesia celular puede sobresalir a través de grupos celulares.

The Biblical Mandate for Discipling the Emerging Generation

The Bible only gives 2 mandates for discipling the emerging generation.

1. One Generation is responsible for the next (e.g Psalm   145 :4)

We are all responsible for the emerging generation, for discipling and passing on all that God has given to us. Discipleship is a close relational experience with someone who knows them well, who models Godly principles and can lead them to encounter the living God on a day to day, moment by moment basis. There are too many children and young people without Godly role models and disciplers. This tremendous privilege and responsibility cannot be left to a few. To take a nation we must take the next generation and discipleship is the way Jesus told all of us to do it.

2. Parents are responsible for their children   (e.g Deuteronomy 29:29)

We are commanded to pass on a passionate love for God to our own children in the manner of Deuteronomy 6:4-9 and out of the abundance of our own love for Him to spill that passion all over our children.  It is not the task of the cell, or the church to disciple children from Christian families. The vision of God is that every home is intentional in discipling their children in an environment of a passionate and obedient love for God.  Malachi 2:15

I have a dream: that parents raise soldiers and bring them to the body of Christ which forms them into an army to win the lost

Translated –

I have a dream: that parents make disciples and bring these discipled children to the body of Christ which forms them into a cell to win the lost.

Challenge:  Changing the culture of the church to disciple the emerging generation according to the Word of God must start with cell leaders, coaches, Pastors, etc, living this with their families. Children and young people whose parents are in leadership were intended by God to be blessed and privileged by their parents role.  Discipling them is a priority over the discipleships of others, training them over the training of others. Deut. 6:4-9 needs to be a lifestyle for leaders too. Ministry was not intended to harm our children but to be a tremendous opportunity.

Discipling the emerging generation is a Biblical doctrine, its message must be returned to the pulpit, its culture to the church.

Key Thoughts:  why do we focus on adults  discipling each other without being sure they are discipling their own children first? If they are discipling their children then they will multiply obedience to that command, if they are not they will model disobedience.

Key Strategy: build into the equipping track for all adults the 2 Biblical principles for discipling the emerging generation and then inspire, release and equip them to go and make disciples of their peers

Clearly define the roll of the church / cell and the role of parents. Let this be known and resourced.

Result of obedience to these two commands : the nations will praise Him.  Psalm 45:17

El mandato bblico para discipular a la Generación Emergente.

La Biblia solo da 2 mandatos para discipular a la generación emergente:

1. Una generación es responsable de la siguiente generación (por ejemplo, Salmo 145: 4).

Todos somos responsables de la generación emergente, para discipular y transmitir todo lo que Dios nos ha dado. El discipulado es una experiencia relacional cercana con alguien a quien se conoce bien, que modela los principios de Dios y puede conducir al encuentro con el Dios vivo en el da a da, momento a momento. Hay muchos niños y jóvenes sin modelos y discipuladores piadosos a seguir. Este tremendo privilegio y responsabilidad no puede dejarse en manos de unos pocos. Para tomar una nación debemos tomar la próxima generación y el discipulado es la manera en que Jesús nos dijo a todos que lo hagamos.

2. Los padres son responsables de sus hijos (por ejemplo, Deuteronomio 29:29).

Desafo: Cambiar la cultura de la iglesia para discipular a la generación emergente de acuerdo a la Palabra de Dios. Debe comenzar con lderes de células, entrenadores, pastores, etc., que viven esto con sus familias. Los niños y jóvenes cuyos padres están en el liderazgo estaban destinados por Dios para ser bendecidos y privilegiados por el papel de los padres. Discipularlos es una prioridad en el discipulado de los demás, capacitándolos sobre la formación de los demás. Deuteronomio 6:4-9 necesita ser un estilo de vida para los lderes también. El Ministerio no tena la intención de dañar a nuestros hijos, sino ser una gran oportunidad.
