For at least several decades, El Salvador has been without the traditional concept of family. The deterioration began during the 1980s when a large part of the population migrated abroad, mainly to the United States. People were running away from the civil war that ransacked the country for eleven years. At present, over 20% of the Salvadoran population lives outside of El Salvador (and often families have been split in two, with some family members staying within the country and others living abroad).

This new demographic reality in El Salvador has produced a huge number of children and young people living without a parent or without the two of them. They normally live with their grandparents or other relatives. The reality of a home without parents is a situation that negatively affects many children and then later stimulates them to join violent gangs which gives them a sense of belonging, the feeling of being in family.

Under these disjointed, dysfunctional conditions, many cell members literally see their cell as their true family. Our leaders are encouraged to become tutors of children and young people that attend the cells. In this way, the cells help save these young people from future violence and vices. In the cells children find care, concern, love and acceptance. We encourage our leaders to take another step further and to watch after the domestic conditions in which the children live. This helps the children to stay in school, something that their absentee parents cannot control. We our motivated to fulfill God’s will on earth as it is in heaven.

La célula como familia alternativa.

Hace ya varias décadas que en El Salvador se ha perdido el concepto tradicional de familia. El deterioro comenzó durante los años Ochentas cuando una buena parte de la población emigró fuera del pas, principalmente hacia los Estados Unidos. Las personas huan de la guerra civil que afectó al pas durante 11 años.

Posteriormente, surgieron los refugiados económicos: aquellas personas que no pudiendo encontrar los medios para sobrevivir dignamente en el pas, se vieron obligados a emigrar en busca de opciones. Al presente, más del 20% del total de la población salvadoreña vive fuera del territorio nacional.

Esta realidad demográfica dentro del pas se traduce en una enorme cantidad de niños y jóvenes que viven sin uno de sus padres o sin los dos. Normalmente viven en casa de abuelos u otros parientes. La realidad de un hogar sin padres es una situación que golpea a muchos niños y que luego produce su integración en pandillas violentas donde buscan satisfacer su sentido de pertenencia.

En estas condiciones el trabajo de evangelización de las células no sólo es una imagen de la familia sino que es la familia para muchos de ellos. Nuestros lderes son animados a convertirse en tutores de los niños y los jóvenes que asisten a las células con el propósito de librarlos de la violencia y otros vicios. En las células los niños encuentran atención, interés, amor y acogimiento. Animamos a nuestros lderes a dar un paso más allá y preocuparse por las condiciones domésticas en que viven los menores. Ayudarles a seguir en la escuela y todas aquellas cosas que sus padres ausentes no pueden hacer por ellos. Con ello, se tiene la convicción que se está luchando para que se haga la voluntad de Dios en la tierra igual que en los cielos.

Some years ago in Argentina, I read a sentence that sums up in a few words all the evangelistic and discipleship ministry of the church: “God desires a family of many children who are like Jesus.”

This phrase leapt out at me because it doesn’t talk about crowds or mega churches but is friendly, welcoming and summarizes God’s purpose. Allow me to explain further. On one hand, God is the Father of this great family. As we know from the Bible, God is a loving Father (1 Jn. 4:8), slow to anger, and rich in mercy (Ps. 103: 8). He never leaves or forsakes us (Heb. 13:5) and meets all the needs of his children (Mt 6: 8.32). What a great image of our God!

On the other hand, those children within the family are born again of God’s pure, perfect will (Jn: 1:12-13). God gives birth to children who are forgiven, justified, sanctified and declared heirs of all the Father’s blessings. The Father’s love to his children satisfies the three basic needs of every human being: love, acceptance and security. There is no doubt that God loves his children unconditionally, even if his children are sometimes unfaithful. The children in God’s family are accepted by grace and not by merit. God protects them with his powerful hand and even sends forth his angels to act on their behalf (Heb. 1:14).

In addition, the phrase expresses a goal for God’s children: to be like Jesus. This is what Christian discipleship is all about: that all of God’s children reach the fullness of the measure of the stature of Christ (Eph. 4:13), that is, that each child manifests the character of Jesus.

Remember that your ministry exalts God’s family. Every time you preach or teach and a person receives Jesus Christ, he or she becomes part of God’s wonderful family. Whatever else you do in your church, remember that your goal is help people become like Jesus. And you yourself are part of this wonderful family, who is cared for by a loving Father.

Un Gran Familia

Hace algunos años, en Argentina, le una frase que resume en tan pocas palabras todo el ministerio evangelstico y de discipulado de la iglesia, deca lo siguiente: “Dios quiere una familia de muchos hijos iguales a Jesús”.

La frase saltó a mis ojos porque su expresión era amable, acogedora y familiar. No hablaba de multitudes o de mega iglesias, hablaba de una familia estructurada, con jerarqua, saludable, funcional y con propósito definido. ¿A qué me refiero? Por un lado, muestra a Dios como el Padre de esta gran familia. Como sabemos por la palabra, es un padre amoroso (1 Jn. 4:8); lento para la ira y grande en misericordia (Sal. 103: 8); que nunca abandona ni desampara (He. 13:5); y que conoce todas las necesidades de sus hijos (Mt 6: 8,32). ¡Qué grandiosa imagen de nuestro Dios!

Por otro lado, están los hijos, nacidos de la pura y absoluta voluntad de Dios (Jn: 1:12-13). Hijos perdonados, justificados, santificados y declarados herederos de todas las bendiciones que el padre tiene en gloria. Este amor del padre hacia los hijos se expresa también en la satisfacción de las tres necesidades básicas de todo ser humano: amor, aceptación y seguridad. No cabe duda que Dios ama incondicionalmente a sus hijos aun cuando estos a veces son infieles, los acepta en su familia por gracia y no por méritos, y los protege con su mano poderosa y aún con ángeles dispuestos para actuar a su favor (He. 1:14).

Además, la frase expresa una meta para los hijos: ser iguales a Jesús. Esto es el discipulado cristiano, llevar a todos los hijos a alcanzar la plenitud de la medida de la estatura de Jesucristo (Ef. 4:13); esto es, que cada uno reproduzca en su vida el carácter de Jesús, el único a quien debemos imitar.

Mi estimado lder, tu ministerio engrandece la familia de Dios. Cada vez que predicas o enseñas y una persona recibe a Jesucristo pasa a ser parte de esta numerosa familia. Cada vez que enseñas y formas a otros en la escuela de lder o academia bblica estás contribuyendo a que los hijos se parezcan a Jesús. Tu mismo eres parte de esta gran familia, y junto a mi tenemos el mejor de los padres.

While mentoring the Regeneration Church in Dnepropetskov, Ukraine, I was deeply impressed by their family spirit, first among the leaders. They would gather at the pastor’s residence to play, eat, pray, and share together. Every day!

Pastor Vladimir Muntieanu could call his key leaders at 8 p.m. to “come on over” and off they would go, to return to their homes after midnight. Their total love and devotion to each other and to their Pastor made them a family, rather than a church staff.

I sensed this same family spirit in hundreds of cell groups. They were authentic families, not just “weekly cells.” Their experience of true community was total!

I made five visits over 18 months. The cells multiplied rapidly as unbelievers came to faith at the rate of 200 a week, all the result of harvest in the home groups. I began to ask questions about why this Body of Christ had such unity and growth.

I found the answer had several sources. The first was the conversion experience of Pastor Vladimir. Under the Russian control of the city, no religion was tolerated during his younger years. He had been told he was terminal at age 19, not to return for treatment by the Communist hospital. This happened as Perestroika came to the city and the Gospel arrived through Canadian missionaries .

Walking home from this bad news, he was intercepted by a young man his age who witnessed and gave him a Gospel of John. Through reading it, he fasted and prayed that he would meet God. After several days, he was instantly healed!

For him, it was normal for God to heal and deliver. Now, after the worship time in every service, he invites the congregation of thousands to ask the Holy Spirit to touch their need. In silence he waits. Soon there are sobs, laughter, cries from the demonized. Scores are touched by God all over the auditorium; people are ministered to by cell members. My conclusion: these believers know God is among them! They do not question the Presence and Power of God in their midst.

The second source was learning about the fragmented family lives people experienced under Communism, where the State took children to huge camps to brainwash them, focusing their loyalty to the state ahead of the family. I visited a decrepit retreat site where thousands of children had been housed for months at a time.

Witchcraft and immorality also penetrated these families, often making them loveless collections of relatives. Christ’s Basic Bodies became the first place where agape love could be experienced! In a real way, the cells of this church have established God’s family in the Ukraine.

Estableciendo la Familia de Dios en la Tierra.

Mientras estaba dando consejera a la Iglesia Regeneración en Dnepropetskov, en Ucrania, estaba profundamente impresionado por su espritu hacia la familia, primero entre los lderes. Se reunan en la casa del pastor para jugar, comer, orar y compartir juntos. ¡Todos los das!

El Pastor Vladimir Muntieanu poda llamar a sus lderes clave a las 8 pm para “venir” y luego se iba, para volver a sus hogares después de la medianoche. Su amor total y devoción el uno al otro a su Pastor hizo una familia, en lugar de un personal de iglesia.

Sent ese mismo espritu familiar en cientos de grupos celulares. Eran familias  auténticas, no sólo “las células semanales”. ¡Su experiencia de la verdadera comunidad fue total!

He hecho cinco visitas en mas de 18 meses. Las células se multiplicaron rápidamente con incrédulos que vinieron a la fe, en un estimado de 200 a la semana, todo resultado de la cosecha en los grupos hogareños. Empecé a hacer preguntas acerca de por qué este Cuerpo de Cristo tuvo tal unidad y crecimiento.

Encontré que la respuesta tena varias fuentes. La primera fue la experiencia de la conversión del Pastor Vladimir. Bajo el control Ruso de la ciudad, ninguna religión era tolerada durante su juventud. Le haban dicho que iba a fallecer a los 19 años, por no volver para el tratamiento en un hospital Comunista. Esto sucedió cuando Perestroika llegó a la ciudad y el Evangelio llegó a través de misioneros canadienses.

Caminando a casa luego de esta mala noticia, fue interceptado por un joven de su edad que fue testigo y le dio el libro del Evangelio de Juan. A través de su lectura, ayunó y oró para reunirse con Dios. Después de varios das, ¡fue sanado al instante!

Para él, era normal que Dios lo sanara y libertara. Ahora, después del tiempo de adoración en cada servicio, invita a la congregación de miles de personas que pidan al Espritu Santo que toque su necesidad. En silencio espera. Pronto hay llantos, risas, gritos de los endemoniados. Todos son tocados por Dios en todo el auditorio, la gente es ministrada por miembros de la célula. Mi conclusión: ¡estos creyentes saben que Dios está entre ellos! Ellos no ponen en duda la presencia y el poder de Dios en medio de ellos.

La segunda fuente fue aprender sobre las vidas de las familias fragmentadas, gente con experiencia bajo el comunismo, cuando el Estado tomó a los niños y los llevó a enormes campos para lavarles el cerebro, centrando su lealtad al Estado. He visitado un sitio de retiro, donde miles de niños han sido internados a la vez durante meses.

Brujera e inmoralidad también penetró a estas familias, a menudo haciendo las colecciones de familiares sin amor. El cuerpo de Cristo se convirtió en el primer lugar donde el amor ágape puede ser experimentado. De una manera real, las células de esta iglesia han establecido la familia de Dios en Ucrania.

As the family of God we must preserve and reflect His image as seen in the human family that He created and ordained on earth.  We can not dismantle earthly family and then say we are family.  By reflecting Him in His earthly family within the cell we preserve the heart of who He is.  When God created the family He wanted an expression of Himself. He wanted His image to be reproduced in unity and harmony. God Himself is community (Father, Son and Holy Spirit) relationally communing and flowing together. He wanted a reflection of Himself on earth and had Adam and Eve  not sinned their family would have been the community where God would have been at home.

When God set His people Israel in order, he placed each child within a family, each family within a tribe and each tribe within the nation. No generation was excluded, no child left out, no older person put aside.  Within each tribe were the components of family: they were community. God is bringing that same order back to His people.  The child within the family, the lonely in families, the family within the cell and the cell within the congregation. As we allow Him to recreate that image in the cell, as we receive by faith the gift of community among us we will experience healing and once again live in the environment He created for us to flourish in.

In this way the Father is preparing the bride for His Son. A bride that reflects His image, a people prepared. He created us perfectly, set us in families that would be a tangible expression of who He is. Families who together would be His bride. Families, individuals of every generation together  in community as the family of God taking the Light of the gospel into the darkest places and embracing the hurting till they find healing in the arms of His people as embraced  in the family of God.

Reflejando la Familia de Dios.

Como familia de Dios, debemos preservar y reflejar Su imagen como se ve en la familia humana la cual Él creó y ordenó en la tierra. No podemos desmantelar la familia terrenal y luego decir que somos familia. Al reflejarlo a Él en Su familia terrenal dentro de la célula perseveramos el corazón de lo que es Él. Cuando Dios creó la familia, Él quera una expresión de s mismo. Él quera que su imagen fuera reproducida en la unidad y la armona. Dios mismo es la comunidad (Padre, Hijo y Espritu Santo) relacional en comunión y fluyendo juntos. Quera un reflejo de s mismo en la tierra y tubo a Adán y Eva y si no hubieran pecado, su familia habra sido la comunidad donde Dios habra estado en casa.

Cuando Dios estableció Su pueblo Israel en orden, Él colocó a cada niño dentro de una familia, cada familia dentro de una tribu y cada tribu dentro de una nación. Ninguna generación se excluyó, ningún niño se quedó fuera, ninguna persona mayor fue puesta a un lado. Dentro de cada tribu estaban los componentes de la familia: eran una comunidad. Dios está trayendo ese mismo orden de regreso a su pueblo. El niño en la familia, los que están solos en la familia, la familia dentro de la célula y la célula dentro de la congregación. Como le permitimos recrear esa imagen en la célula, cuando recibimos por la fe el don de comunidad entre nosotros experimentaremos la sanidad y volvemos a vivir en el ambiente que creó para nosotros para prosperar.

De esta manera el Padre está preparando la novia para su Hijo. Una novia que refleje su imagen, un pueblo preparado. Él nos creó a la perfección, nos puso en las familias que seran una expresión tangible de lo que Él es. Familias que juntos seran su novia. Las familias, los individuos de cada generación en comunidad como la familia de Dios, teniendo la luz del evangelio en los lugares más oscuros y abrazando a los heridos hasta encontrar sanidad en los brazos de su pueblo, ya aceptados en la familia de Dios.

One of the principal motivations for doing cell ministry is to establish God’s family here on the earth. 1 Timothy 3:15, “if I am delayed, you will know how people ought to conduct themselves in God’s household, which is the church of the living God, the pillar and foundation of the truth.” The picture of God’s family came straight from the house church environment of the New Testament. I agree with Robert Banks, a New Testament theologian, who said, “The comparison of the Christian community with a “family” must be regarded as the most significant metaphorical usage of all. For that reason it has pride of place in this discussion. More than any of the other images utilized by Paul, it reveals the essence of this thinking about community” (Paul’s Idea of Community, p. 49)

Several months ago, I was talking to a group of leaders about my convictions that the main image of the church in the New Testament is the family of God. I shared with them how Jesus came to establish God’s family and used the houses to get his point across (Luke 9 & 10). I shared that the family imagery will help motivate cell leaders to reach out to the lonely and spiritually “homeless.” One of the leaders said, “The family image will never work in our country. We have a bad image of family, and we have to make the church more relevant to our modern society.” He, like many, was trying to figure how to make the church acceptable to the post-Christian mindset.

Many church leaders, in fact, embrace a modern business model for cell groups. They envision the church as a business and pastors like CEOs who are hired to create church goods and services. The cell group is one those goods. However, when we adopt a business model, attendees hop from church to church because they see the church as a business, and they figure they should get the best “deal” by looking for the best worship service in town. Even within one local church, they hop from cell group to cell group because they are looking for what serves them best.

Promoting the family nature of the church to the congregation will help people understand why they congregate and how the church should function. The family imagery will also critique the idea of individual salvation that is separated from the church.

As you help motivate your cells to focus on the family imagery, the home group members will be more transparent—being willing to go to each other, rather than gossiping. It will help them to welcome those who are different—racially, economically, socially, and at different levels spiritually. You will also have more passion to reach the lonely and hurting. Is your cell group and church acting like a family? What are some of the ways you can improve in this area?

Motivados para construir la familia de Dios

Una de las principales motivaciones para hacer el ministerio celular es el establecimiento de la familia de Dios aqu en la tierra. 1 Timoteo 3:15, ” para que si tardo, sepas cómo debes conducirte en la casa de Dios, que es la iglesia del Dios viviente, columna y baluarte de la verdad ” La imagen de la familia de Dios vino directamente desde el entorno de la iglesia en casas del Nuevo Testamento. Estoy de acuerdo con Robert Banks, un teólogo del Nuevo Testamento, que dijo: “La comparación de la comunidad cristiana con una” familia “debe ser considerado como el uso metafórico más importante de todos. Por esa razón tiene un lugar de honor en esta discusión. Más que cualquiera otra imagen utilizada por Paul, revela la esencia de esta forma al pensar acerca de la comunidad “(idea de Pablo de Comunidad, p. 49)

Hace varios meses, yo estaba hablando con un grupo de lderes acerca de mis convicciones, en que la imagen principal de la iglesia en el Nuevo Testamento es la familia de Dios. Compart con ellos cómo Jesús vino a establecer la familia de Dios y usó las casas para hacer entender (Lucas 9 y 10). Compart que las imágenes de la familia ayudarán a motivar a los lderes celulares para llegar a las personas solas y espiritualmente “sin hogar”. Uno de los lderes dijo: “La imagen de la familia no va a funcionar en nuestro pas. Tenemos una mala imagen de la familia, y tenemos que hacer que la iglesia sea más relevante para nuestra sociedad moderna”. Él, como muchos, estaba tratando de averiguar cómo hacer que la iglesia fuera aceptable para la mentalidad post-cristiana.

Muchos lderes de iglesias, de hecho, adoptan un modelo de negocio moderno para los grupos celulares. Se imaginan a la iglesia como un negocio y LOS pastores como directores generales que son contratados para crear bienes y servicios en la iglesia. El grupo celular es uno de esos bienes. Sin embargo, cuando se adopta a un modelo de negocio, los asistentes brincan de iglesia en iglesia, porque ven la iglesia como un negocio, y figuran que deben conseguir la mejor “oferta”, buscando el mejor servicio de alabanza en la ciudad. Incluso dentro de una iglesia local, brincan de grupo en grupo porque están buscando a quien les sirve mejor.

Al promover el carácter familiar de la iglesia a la congregación ayudará a entender por qué las personas se congregan y cómo debe funcionar la iglesia. Las imágenes de la familia también critican la idea de la salvación individual que está separado de la iglesia.

Al ayudar a motivar tus células a concentrarse en las imágenes de la familia, los miembros del grupo serán más transparentes-estando dispuesto a ir a cada uno, en lugar de lo ajeno. Les ayudará a dar la bienvenida a aquellos que son diferentes – racialmente, económicamente, socialmente y espiritualmente a diferentes niveles. Usted también tendrá más pasión para llegar a los que están solos y sufriendo. ¿Está su grupo celular y se iglesia actuando como una familia? ¿Cuáles son algunas de las áreas en que puede mejorar esto?
