The Cell as an Extension of Pastoral Care

Cell ministry is a key way to provide pastoral care. The cells are made up of human beings and, therefore, many problems surface among them. I’m referring here to personal conflicts, sin, discouragement, murmuring and many more problems. Granted, these same problems occur frequently among Christians in general.

The advantage of the cell is that it allows the members to deal with their problems around a group of like-minded believers. Believers with problems can identify their own problems among others who are struggling as well. However, simply identifying problems isn’t helpful if something is not done to resolve the difficulties. This is where it is important to educate Christians on the responsibility they have to help each other.

Leaders play an important role in reminding believers to mutually encourage one another and to help each other resolve difficulties. And each leader has a coach to help resolve personal problems the leader might be experiencing. Thus, the cell strategy helps people work through personal problems in a loving, caring atmosphere where personal attention is a priority.

But what happens when the leader’s coach is struggling with personal problems? This is where the lead pastor becomes involved. This is the essence of Jethro’s advice to Moses, when he told Moses to organize in groups of ten with coaches for fifty, one hundred, and one thousand. Only the most difficult cases would then be brought to Moses. Jethro’s advice is still the basis for cell ministry today. Most problems are solved in groups of ten with personal attention given to each leader. And the lead pastor can then focus on leadership development and the ministry of prayer and the Word.
