Multiplication is Not Always Healthy

bill

by Bill Mellinger, Crestline First Baptist Church

Some time back, our Life Group was consistently having 17 people or more in attendance. We actually had more than one leader in training and a commitment for a host home. As we prepared to multiply several things happened. Some people dropped out of the group. One of the leaders in training got a new job that caused him to miss many meetings. The couple that was all set to host the group decided that they could not fit it into their schedules. Instead of launching a new group, we had to focus once again on the health of the mother cell.

Were we ready to start a new group? It sure seemed like we were. The Group had 17 active members for several months. The reality was a lack of consistency in the group. Nor was the group actively reaching out and the fellowship was weak. Instead of forcing the multiplication, we are now regrouping and retraining for the next step.

It really is important to have a healthy group before multiplying. What good is a new group if it is not going to be a healthy cell that is reaching new people for Christ and growing disciples? Let’s be committed to multiplication. But, let’s make sure that what we are multiplying is going to be healthy.

Let me give you an example of another unhealthy group that was almost ready to multiply. In fact, this group did multiply. However, everyone who attended the first group started attending the second group!! All we did was change nights and the main leader. This was not multiplication.

We’ve learned from our past mistakes. All of our groups are now trying to be more intentional with our outreach and the development of community. As we get healthy, we will be able to give birth to some new groups.

Have you forced multiplication of a group? Have you started a group before the parent group was healthy? If so, you probably met with some of the same disappointments that we experienced. It is exciting to give birth, but it is best when the parents are mature and ready for parenting. God bless you as you develop teams that are ready for healthy multiplication.

What is a Healthy Cell?

joel

by Joel Comiskey

Healthy cells multiply. This is the guiding theme of April’s JCG blog. If healthy cells multiply, the natural question is, “What constitutes a healthy cell that is ready to multiply? I believe there are at least four marks or characteristics of a healthy cell:

1. Community: Before multiplication, those in the cell should first experience what it means to be the family of God. The Trinity loves community and a key reason for cell ministry is for God’s people to reflect the Trinity’s nature of love and unity. But the path to true community leads through conflict. During my seminars, people often ask me about relational conflict between group members—as if something is gravely wrong when conflicts occur. I remind them that conflict is God’s tool to make us more like Jesus and to actually fulfill Christ’s command to love one another in spite of our differences. Pressing through the conflict to community is worth the pain, and it’s not wise rush the multiplication process until community is happening. In fact, if community is not present in the group, what will the daughter cell have to offer? Community is a wonderful attraction for both believers and unbelievers, and the group is not ready to multiply until it’s there.

2. Priesthood of all believers: Cell ministry is all about participation. It’s allowing every member to become the priest of the most high God. It’s the opposite of sitting passively and listening to someone talk. I tell leaders to only talk 30% of the time and to stimulate members to talk the remaining 70%. But I’m not only referring to “talking.” Participation also includes involvement in the 4Ws, prayer, evangelism, and use of the spiritual gifts. Remember that the cell is the body of Christ, an organic, supernatural entity that operates according to the giftedness of every member. The cell is the best place for believers to discover and use their spiritual gifts. Are you teaching on the spiritual gifts and identifying those gifts in your members? If members are passive in the mother cell group, how are they going to helpful when the group multiplies?

3. Group evangelism: One of the key differences between cell groups and normal small groups is the emphasis on evangelism. Just like the The New Testament house churches, cell groups prioritize winning lost souls to Jesus Christ and discipling them within the cell group. Members also grow in unity as they reach out as a team. If the mother cell group has not practiced evangelism together, most likely the daughter group won’t practice it either. Cell groups that are serious about multiplication will emphasize evangelism at each cell meeting. How? One of key ways is to pray for “oikos” connections and then make bold plans to reach them. The empty chair is another great tool (setting an empty chair in the midst of the group and praying for a new person to fill it). I think it’s also a great idea to occasionally substitute the regular cell meeting for a planned outreach activity (e.g., feeding the hungry and passing out church fliers, etc.).

4. Formation of new disciples. I believe the essence of cell ministry is forming disciples who make other disciples. Remember that cell members mature in stages. We can learn a lot by how Christ released his disciples. He used at least four stages:

• Observing

• Participation

• Supervision

• Independent ministry

The first step is for cell leaders to observe the members in the cell, paying close attention to their character development. Then the leader (s) needs to make sure the members are actively using their gifts and participating in the cell. The best leaders even allow members to lead the lesson time under the leadership team’s supervision and encouragement. While new disciples are being formed, they are also completing the training track (this normally takes four months to one year). Ultimately those overseeing the potential leader (s) need to give final approval.

God loves cells to multiply, but he’s also very concerned that both mother cell and daughter cell survive the process! Are you practicing the above four marks of a healthy cell group? Why or why not?

Characteristics of a Healthy Cell

mario

by Mario Vega

It has been mentioned that only healthy cells multiply, which is a truth both from a biological and ecclesiastical point of view. But what are the characteristics of a healthy cell?

First, a cell is healthy when it is evangelistic. This implies an effort to always bring guests to the cell meeting. The cell group is not only a group of Christians who meet to have fellowship. It is also a group of committed Christians who find fellowship in the diligent effort to reach the lost with the gospel. They are Christians who are more delighted when the cell multiplies and new people are reached, rather than maintaining a closed group of believers who only enjoy fellowship with each other.

Secondly, a cell is healthy when it cares for each of its members. Evangelism will not be complete until mutual care takes place among members. Healthy cell members are dedicated to care for each other, to love each other, to bear each other’s burdens, to pray for each other, to confess their sins to one another, etc.

Third, a cell is healthy when it develops new leaders for new cell groups. This means that the leader is quick to delegate significant functions in the cell and to help new members take the training course, so they can become new candidates. The best training is not the one done theoretically but practically.

When a cell combines evangelism with mutual care directed to the training of new leaders, eventually it will end up reaching a healthy multiplication.

Health First

by Steve Cordle

Just as in the physical body, a main goal of a cell group is multiplication. However, as leaders, we only want healthy cells to multiply; after all, when unhealthy cells multiply we call that cancer.

Since we believe that “healthy cells multiply,” we have to answer the question, “What does it mean to have a healthy group? I like to see several health markers before a group multiplies:

  1. A healthy leader: Is the apprentice truly ready to lead a new group? I want to see the apprentice growing spiritually and loving others. I also want to see that the leader has brought someone to thegroup (and preferably that the person has stayed). If this has not happened, there is a good chance their new group will not grow, since the leader will not demonstrate an outward drive. Does the apprentice understand the church’s vision and support it? If not, you may just give birth to a renegade group.
  2. Group outreach: Has the group grown in recent times? Does the group serve their community on a regular basis, looking beyond itself?
  3. Discipleship: Do the members show evidence of obeying Jesus? Is life change occurring?
  4. Community: do they share their lives with one another? Do they connect outside the group?

No group is perfect, and therefore one could always find a reason why a group is not ready to multiply. But a group doesn’t need to be perfect to multiply, just healthy.

Salud primeramente.

Multiplying through Love, Prayer, and Passion

rob

by Rob Campbell

The multiplication of a cell is quite a challenge! I would like to offer three quick thoughts that can easily be overlooked as we seek to make disciples that result in multiplication.

In other words, here are three necessary ingredients for a healthy cell multiplication to occur.

First, PRAY for your cell members to grow in Christ and for the Holy Spirit to place in their hearts a desire to lead a cell. To be specific, wouldn’t it be great to know that God was the catalyst behind your cell multiplying? You, therefore, can relieve yourself of arm-twisting, spiritualizing, and/or manipulating others. Let God be God and allow Him to birth your future cell multiplication. Pray consistently with great anticipation of what God is going to do.

Next, LOVE your cell members. Think of how Jesus loved his disciples. Have you ever considered that Jesus loved his disciples into the ministry? In other words, it was through the love of Christ that his disciples were invited to carry the gospel message to the world. His motivation is clear. He loved his disciples. It can be our motivation as well. Love your cell members in such a way that they trust God’s leading meshed with your desire for them to one day lead a cell.

Finally, “Passion will find a way.” JCG team member Steve Cordle said that to me many years ago as we were discussing cell multiplication. Here’s what that phrase means to me. When an individual is passionate about God and the vision of the church, then cell multiplication will happen. Steve has learned over the years that a passionate cell leader will find a way for cell multiplication to take place. He/she is able to prioritize his/her life call, being ever mindful of potential distractions and detours.

Needless to say, when people ask me: “How do you multiply the cells in your church?” I respond, “Through prayer, love, and passion.” By the way, I’ve tried to multiply cells in many other ways and made some silly mistakes and serious miscalculations.

One final thought: Don’t minimize the importance of multiplication. It’s vital.
