Some believers excuse themselves from evangelizing with “I don’t have the gift of evangelism,” but evangelization is not a gift, it’s the responsibility of all believers. Cornelius complied with that responsibility when he invited Peter to speak to his family and close friends (Acts 10).Some believers think that God will use someone to save their families and friends as long as they don’t have to do it. Yet, they are mistaken. If they don’t speak to them, it’s difficult for them to be saved. God saved us to save others. He saved us when we were healthy and not when we were on our death beds (like the thief on the cross), because God wants us to be involved in evangelization. The person who rejoices in his or her own salvation but doesn’t want to get involved in saving others is not participating in God’s missional work in this world (1 Cor. 9:16 ).
The gift of the evangelist is a special ability to increase the capacity to evangelize, but even those who have the gift to evangelize would not have known that they have the gift, unless they had started to evangelize. Why? Because all of the gifts of the Spirit are discovered in the process of acting upon them. On the other hand, to think that the job of evangelizing only falls in the hands of the professionals is a an error. The main impact of evangelism throughout the world has been made by the small and unknown that have taken on their responsibility to evangelize. Adolph Harnack, the German Lutheran theologian (1851-1930), said: “The great mission of the expansion of Christianity was in reality done by spontaneous missionaries.â€
Evangelizing others is not a gift; rather it’s the only opportunity that people have of being saved. People cannot find Christ alone. The world is not full of signs that say, “here’s how you find Jesus.” Rather, people are saved through the proclamation of the gospel. The scripture says in Romans 10: 14, “How, then , can they call on the one they have not believed in ? And how can they believe in the one of whom they have not heard? And how can they hear without someone preaching to them?†If there is no-one to preach Jesus, there will be no-one to hear, or accept him. But the Scripture also adds in Romans 10: 15, “And how can they preach unless they are sent?†In other words, nobody has the initiative to preach about Christ unless he has been sent. This means that we as Christian leaders should insist constantly that the Gospel is preached, and permanently send the believers to do it. When we don’t insist on evangelism, the motivation falls. We should not wait to see if evangelism happens, but we should send people to do it. And if we don’t want to seem heavy with our insistence, we must be creative, inventing ways to motivate people to evangelize. Yet, we should never stop insisting because God has ordained the preaching of the Gospel to save people.

Algunos creyentes se excusan en que no tienen el don de evangelismo, para no evangelizar. Pero evangelizar no es un don, es una responsabilidad de todo creyente. Una responsabilidad con su prójimo, especialmente con sus parientes y amigos más cercanos. Cornelio cumplió bien con esa responsabilidad cuando invitó a Pedro a hablarle a sus parientes y amigos más cercanos (Hechos 10). Algunos creyentes creen que Dios se valdrá de alguien que no sea ellos mismo para salvar su parientes y amigos más cercanos, pero se equivocan, si ellos no les hablan, difcilmente serán salvos. Dios nos salvó para salvar, y nos salvó ahora y no cuando estábamos a punto de morir, como el ladrón en la cruz, porque hay un trabajo de evangelización que hacer. Quien ha sido salvo y no quiere salvar ayudar a salvar a otros, yo me pregunto ¿qué hace en este mundo? (1Cor. 9:16).
El don de evangelista es una habilidad especial que incrementa la capacidad de evangelizar, pero incluso el que tiene el don de evangelista no lo hubiese descubierto si no se hubiese puesto a evangelizar, porque los dones se descubren actuando. Por otro lado, es un error incluso historico, pensar que la tarea de evangelizar recae sólo en manos de profesionales, de los que tiene ese don o esa capacidad. Porque en la expansión del evangelio por todo el mundo, incluso desde los comienzos de la iglesia, han sido los pequeños, los desconocidos y los comunes, los que más han desarrollado la tarea evangelizadora. De hecho Harnack, el teólogo luterano alemán (1851-1930) dijo: “Es imposible ver en ninguna clase de persona dentro de la iglesia a los principales agentes de la propaganda cristiana. La gran misión del cristianismo fue en realidad llevada a cabo por misioneros improvisadosâ€.
La evangelización nos es un don, es la única oportunidad que tienen las personas para ser salvas. La gente no puede encontrar a Cristo por s sola. El mundo no está señalizado como para encontrar a Cristo, más bien todo lo contrario. A Cristo tampoco se le encuentra de casualidad sino de causalidad, siempre se da el caso de que alguien le llevó a ese corazón. Y la escritura dice en Romanos 10:14 “¿Cómo, pues, invocarán a aquel en el cual no han credo? ¿Y cómo creerán en aquel de quien no han odo? ¿Y cómo oirán sin haber quien les predique?”. Si no hay quien predique a Jesús, no hay quien oiga de él, ni quien lo acepte. Pero además añade en Romanos 10:15 “¿Y cómo predicarán si no fueren enviados?”, en otras palabras, nadie tiene la iniciativa de predicar a Cristo a menos que se le enve. Esto quiere decir que debemos insistir constantemente en que se predique el evangelio, enviar permanentemente al creyente a que lo haga. Cuando la insistencia no es constante la evangelización cae. Quien no insiste en que hay que ir, hace que nadie vaya. No debemos esperar que se evangelice debemos enviar a hacerlo. Y si no queremos caer pesados con nuestra insistencia, seamos creativos, inventemos formas de motivar a la evangelización, pero nunca dejemos de insistir en ello porque entonces nadie será salvo.
