Kim and Kim Cole love cell ministry. One of the main reasons is because their lives have been transformed in the process of reaching out and developing relationships with non-Christians. When I visited their cell group in York, PA, I noticed a vibrant cell group with many new converts. Kim and Kim have multiplied their cell many times. They are “friends of sinners” who have also been transformed in the process of outreach.

Kim Cole, the wife,  told me that her church’s relational emphasis (York Alliance Church) not only transformed her own life but also the life of her cell group and church family. Kim was born and raised in York Alliance Church in York, PA and accepted Jesus when she was 14 years old. She had some very good pastors, but she also saw how the church could so easily be entrenched in a building with programs. When York Alliance started emphasizing cell ministry in 2001, she and her husband (also Kim) realized that God was challenging them to take the gospel outside the four walls of the local church.

She, along with the other members of her Life group, were challenged to develop relationships with neighbors.  She began her relational journey by opening her life up to those in her neighborhood. Kim told me, “It’s very scary to live life in the open. I wasn’t accustomed to being real.” On one occasion she make home-made ice-cream in the front yard and invited people to join them. This was the beginning of letting the neighbors see their lives. She  discovered that the best way to reach out was through being vulnerable. She went to her neighbor, Crystal, and asked to borrow a pot. This is how her relationship with Crystal started. As Kim developed a relationship with Crystal, she eventually invited her and her husband to the Life group. They accepted the invitation and began attending the cell.

Crystal knew that Kim had something she didn’t have and kept on coming back, wanting to experience that same life. Crystal began to ask hard questions and Kim grew as much as Crystal in the process of searching for answers. Crystal eventually received Jesus, got involved in the cell group, and made her way through the equipping process.  Crystal and her husband eventually  became Life group leaders and even today continue the process of relational outreach.

Relational evangelism not only liberates those who don’t know Jesus, but it also helps believers to become more like Jesus.

Alcance Relacional que Ayuda a Santos y Pecadores

Kim y Kim Cole ¡aman el ministerio celular! Una de las principales razones es porque sus vidas han sido transformadas a través del proceso de alcanzar y desarrollar relaciones con los inconversos. Cuando visité su grupo celular en York, Pensilvania, me di cuenta de un grupo de células vibrante, con muchos nuevos creyentes. Kim y Kim han multiplicado sus células muchas veces. Los considero “amigo de pecadores” que también se han transformado en el proceso de alcance.

Kim Cole, la esposa, me dijo que el énfasis relacional de su iglesia (Iglesia Alianza York), no sólo transformó su propia vida, sino también la vida de su grupo celular y la familia de la iglesia. Kim nació y fue criado en la Iglesia Alianza York en York, Pensilvania y aceptó a Jesús cuando tena 14 años de edad. Ella tuvo muy buenos pastores, pero también vio cómo la iglesia podra ser afianzada con más facilidad en un edificio con programas. Cuando la iglesia Alianza York comenzó hacer énfasis el ministerio celular en 2001, ella y su marido (también Kim) se dieron cuenta de que Dios los estaba desafiando a tomar el Evangelio fuera de las cuatro paredes de la iglesia local.

Ella, y los otros miembros de su grupo de vida, fueron desafiados a desarrollar relaciones con los vecinos. Comenzó su viaje relacional mediante la apertura de su vida a todos los de su barrio. Este fue el comienzo para que los vecinos vieran sus vidas. Ella descubrió que la mejor manera de alcanzar era a través de la vulnerabilidad. Ella fue a su vecino, Crystal, y le pidió prestado un recipiente. As es como comenzó su relación con Crystal. Como Kim desarrolló una relación con Crystal, ella finalmente la invitó con su marido al grupo Vida. Ellos aceptaron la invitación y empezaron a asistir a la célula.

Crystal saba que Kim tena algo que no tena y la mantena regresando, con ganas de experimentar esa misma vida. Crystal comenzó a hacer preguntas difciles y Kim me dijo que ella creció tanto como Crystal en el proceso de búsqueda de respuestas. Crystal finalmente recibió a Jesús, se involucró en el grupo celular, y se abrió paso a través del proceso de equipamiento. Crystal y su esposo, eventualmente llegaron a ser lderes del grupo de vida y continúan aún hoy en da el proceso de alcance relacional.

El Evangelismo relacional no sólo libera a aquellos que no conocen a Jesús, pero también ayuda a los creyentes a ser más como Jesús.

In the first weeks of my life in Christ I understood that one of my responsibilities as a believer was to share my faith with others. But I not only saw this as a responsibility but as a strong internal desire. Somehow I had received some brochures (tracts) that presented the Gospel. I resolved to hand out one of these tracts to every person I met as I walked down the street.

Things seemed simple enough but my problems started once I saw the first person walking down the street. Because I have an introverted personality I thought I would be intruding in the life of that person coming down the street. But the same thing happened with the next one and the next one. I do not remember how many people I found on the street that day, but it seemed like a great multitude, and sadly I wasn’t able to give out a single tract.

I felt frustrated, and I began to think that evangelism simply wasn’t my gift. But God had other plans. At that time, the few young people in church began to go out to evangelize on the weekends. At that time we knew nothing about cell ministry. Soon I became one of the youth group leaders. We assaulted crowded places with singing and gospel preaching.

On one occasion an unbelieving boy started to mock one of our young people who was sharing the Gospel. This boy whistled and laughed out loud at the young Christian. The young preacher began to falter and make mistakes in the pronunciation of the words. Those mistakes increased the mocking of the boy. Soon other mockers joined in. I became filled with a “holy” indignation that the scoffers could defeat one of our young believers. I took the place of the brother who already felt humiliated. I strongly presented the message of the Gospel in front of the scoffers, who were surprised and began to pay attention. Soon everything was under control and we were able to evangelize the whole group. When it was over, one of the young men approached me and said, “Mario, I’d never heard you talk like that.” I realized that something special had happened. I understood that the Holy Spirit anointing had been poured over my life for the first time. What a difference the power of the Spirit makes in our lives when ministering the gospel!

He can do the same for each and every one of us as we step out and evangelize.

Evangelización solitaria y en equipo

En las primeras semanas de mi vida en Cristo entend que una de mis responsabilidades como creyente era compartir mi fe con otras personas. Pero no solamente lo vea como una responsabilidad sino como un deseo interno muy grande. De alguna manera haba recibido algunos folletos que presentaban el evangelio. Me propuse que al caminar por las calles entregara uno de estos folletos a cada persona que encontrara.

Las cosas parecan sencillas pero mi problema fue al verme en la calle con un folleto en mi mano para entregarlo a la primera persona que encontrara. Siendo de una personalidad introvertida pensaba que estara entrometiéndome en la vida de esa persona que vena por la calle. Pero, lo mismo ocurrió con la siguiente y la siguiente. No recuerdo a cuántas personas encontré ese da en la calle, pero de seguro que fueron muchas. Pero no me sent capaz de entregar un solo folleto a nadie.

Me sent frustrado y pensé que quizá no era mi don el evangelizar a otras personas. Pero, Dios tena otros planes. Por ese tiempo los pocos jóvenes que haba en la iglesia comenzaron a organizarse para salir a evangelizar los fines de semana en una época cuando no sabamos nada de la existencia de las células. Pronto llegué a convertirme en uno de los lderes del grupo de jóvenes. De manera literal, asaltábamos los lugares concurridos para comenzar a cantar y luego compartir con la fuerza de la voz el mensaje del evangelio.

En una ocasión un muchacho comenzó a burlarse del joven que comparta el evangelio. Aquel le silbaba y se rea a carcajadas ante el joven cristiano. Este joven comenzó a titubear y a equivocarse en la pronunciación de las palabras. Esas equivocaciones incrementaron las burlas de aquel muchacho, al cual, se sumaron otros burladores. Ante ese cuadro, me indigné mucho pensando que no era posible que esos burladores pudieran derrotar a uno de nuestros jóvenes creyentes. En determinado momento, me puse al frente del grupo y con gran pasión tomé el lugar del hermano que ya se senta humillado. Comencé a presentar con gran firmeza el mensaje del evangelio frente a los burladores, los cuales, se sorprendieron y comenzaron a poner atención. Pronto todo estuvo bajo control y nos fue posible evangelizar a todo el grupo. Cuando todo terminó, otro de los jóvenes se me acercó y me dijo: “Mario, nunca te haba odo hablar de esa manera”. Hasta ese momento ca en la cuenta que algo haba ocurrido. Entend que la unción haba sido derramada sobre m por primera vez. Que diferencia hizo entre mis intentos cobardes y solitarios de repartir folletos y el coraje que pude encontrar en el grupo de jóvenes para el anuncio del evangelio.

Cell as Evangelism Support Group

When we have a big task to do, we like to have help, don’t we? Evangelizing a street or town is not just a big task, it is a supernatural one! We are actually involved in helping people move from death to life, from darkness to light. Obviously we need the power and the gifts of the Holy Spirit to do this (Acts 1:8). And in His mercy, the Holy Spirit has also given us the Body of Christ, the Church.

The cell group can function as a support group and team in the task of reaching out to an area. For example:

• Cell members can regularly pray together by name for the people they are trying to reach out to. It is very encouraging to know that others are sharing the load in lifting your friends to the Lord.
• Members can share with each other the specific actions they are planning to take that week in order to reach their friends. That way they will not only receive suggestions from each other, but also the strength of resolve that comes from verbalizing what you are going to do.
• Members can report back to the group what happened in their sharing efforts. They will receive consolation when it doesn’t go as hoped, and celebration when it does.

All this prayer, planning, and reporting has another important effect: it creates a culture of evangelism among the group members. They pick up a perspective that evangelism is normal, a given. They also learn practically from each other on the journey.

Celular como Grupo de Apoyo Evangelismo

Cuando tenemos una gran tarea por hacer, nos gustara tener ayuda, ¿no es as? Evangelizar a una calle o una ciudad no es sólo una gran tarea, es una tarea sobrenatural! En realidad, estamos involucrados en ayudar a la gente pasar de la muerte a la vida, de las tinieblas a la luz. Obviamente necesitamos el poder y los dones del Espritu Santo para hacer esto (Hechos 1:8). Y, en su misericordia, el Espritu Santo también nos ha dado el Cuerpo de Cristo, la Iglesia.

El grupo celular puede funcionar como un grupo de apoyo y equipo en la tarea de llegar a un área. Por ejemplo:

• Los miembros de la célula pueden orar juntos regularmente por vecinos, pariente y todos las personas en la “lista de bendiciones” (personas que las célula está tratando de evangelizar). Es una bendición grande de saber que otros están compartiendo la carga en el levantamiento de sus amigos en el Señor.
• Los miembros pueden compartir con los otros miembros del grupos las acciones especficas que están planeando tomar durante la semana con el fin de llegar a sus amigos. De esta manera recibirán las sugerencias de otros miembros del grupo y el apoyo personal.
• Los miembros pueden informar al grupo de lo que pasó en su esfuerzo para compartir el evangelio. . Ellos recibirán consuelo cuando no va como se esperaba, y la celebración cuando lo hace.

Toda esta oración, planificación y presentación de informes tiene otro efecto importante: se crea una cultura de la evangelismo entre los miembros del grupo. Capturan el punto de vista de que la evangelización es normal, un hecho. También aprenden prácticamente el uno del otro en el camino.

“ The goal for today’s traditional churches is to individually take individual sinners to make an individual decision about an individualist faith,” says the historian Richard Krautheimer as he compared the Roman imperial service and the Christian liturgy of Constantine. But the goal of the primitive church was one of corporative evangelization. In fact, one principle common in revivals is the presence of team work. And one of the key revivalists was John Wesley who said, “ Christianity is an essentially social religion. Converting it into a solitary religion will destroy it, without a doubt.”

I believe that the principal reason for corporative evangelism is because disciples are formed in the process. The new believers learn as they witness mature believers in action. Dr. Win Arn affirms this fact when says, “In our study of growing churches, we have discovered that one of the common characteristics is a high percentage of intimate relationships between members. Call it love, friendship,……it’s what in reality draws and retains the members.” Dr. Joel Comiskey says something similar in his book “Home Cell Group Explosion, “Cells that have six or more social meetings a month, multiply twice as quickly as those that meet only once or never” (p. 37).

I hope I’ve made it clear that team or corporative evangelism is more effective than individual evangelism.

Evangelismo en Grupo

“La meta de las Iglesias tradicionales hoy es llevar a pecadores individuales a una decisión individual de una fe individualista” dijo el historiador Richard Krautheimer, haciendo un paralelo entre el servicio imperial romano y la liturgia cristiana bajo Constantino. Pero la meta de la Iglesia primitiva era la evangelización corporativa. De hecho los avivamientos han surgido siempre por un trabajo corporativo o en grupo. Y uno de los hombres avivamentistas de mayor prestigio fue Juan Wesley que dijo: “El cristianismo es esencialmente una religión social, convertirlo en una religión solitaria es, sin duda, destruirlo”.

Yo creo que la principal razón por la que el evangelismo debe realizarse corporativamente, es por causa del discipulado en el mismo. Los nuevos creyentes aprenden viendo a los creyentes más mayores desenvolverse. Por otro lado el Dr. Win Arn, dice: “En nuestro estudio sobre la iglesias crecientes, hemos descubierto que una caracterstica común es el alto grado de relaciones intimas entre los miembros.

Llámelo amor, amistad, cariño, … es lo que en realidad atrae y retiene los miembros”. Y el Dr. Joel Comiskey dijo en su libro “Explosión de los grupos celulares” página 37, donde explica los factores que afectan a la multiplicación de una célula: “Las células que tienen seis o más reuniones sociales por mes se multiplican dos veces más rápidamente que aquellas que sólo tienen una o ninguna”.

Está claro en la historia y en la práctica que el evangelismo en grupo o corporativo es más efectivo que el evangelismo individual.

My son gave my wife a grape vine for Mother’s Day. I get the privilege of planting it, which means a good bit of work here in the mountains. We need to dig through the rocks and prepare a kind of cage to protect the roots from the ground squirrels. They are vociferous eaters and would kill the vine if we did not protect it. Can you imagine planting a grape vine with the hope of getting just one grape from the plant?

I believe that God leads people to individually come to him. That said, I am amazed at the number of times groups of people come to faith in Christ. Three thousand were added to the people of God on that first Pentecost after the resurrection. Cornelius and his entire household believed Peter’s message and were saved.

Although I am praying regularly for some people in my “Oikos” (close relationships) to come to know Christ, I appreciate the assistance of my cell in praying as well. Members of my cell actually helped me to share Christ with my Brother-in-law and my nephew. Both came to Christ because of the teamwork that we had. One couple “allowed” my nephew to come up on the mountain and work around their home. Others connected with them at our home. Eventually, both made commitments to Christ and our whole cell felt part of the celebration.

Net fishing brings in huge hauls of fish from the ocean. It is not a lone task but must be done by a team. This is true in so many ways with cell evangelism as well. Some of what net fishing is about is the preparation and connection to community. The Alpha Course has been an example of that for us. An even more interesting example has been the neighborhood barbecues that some of our groups have used. In this case a group selects a home and invites neighbors from that neighborhood to attend a simple barbecue. Guests are even allowed to bring something to share if they would like.

A large net is cast in the neighborhood. Neighbors get to meet one another. The whole cell helps with the meal, the setup/cleanup and the greeting of guests. Conversation occurs around the meal and there may not even be a formal program. This is not about bait and switch. It is about building community. A group can do so much more in a neighborhood than just one person can. What do you think?

Incidentally, net fishing is fun and really builds the confidence and community of the cell as well as opening new doors for relationships. What is your cell doing together to reach your community for Christ. Of course you are praying and this praying leads to some fun action.

¿Qué es la Red de pesca?

Mi hijo le dio a mi esposa una vid de uva para el Da de la Madre. Tengo el privilegio de la plantación, lo que significa un mucho trabajo porque vivimos en las montañas. Tenemos que cavar a través de las rocas y preparar una especie de jaula para proteger las races de las ardillas de tierra. Las ardilla smataran a la vid si no la protegemos. ¿Puede usted imaginar la plantación de una vid de uva con la esperanza de obtener una sola uva de la planta?

Yo creo que Dios salva a cada persona de forma individual. A la vez, estoy sorprendido por el número de veces que los grupos de personas enteros reciben a Cristo como su salvador. Tres mil fueron añadidos al pueblo de Dios en el da de Pentecostés después de la resurrección. Cornelio y toda su familia creyeron el mensaje de Pedro y se salvaron.

Aunque estoy orando regularmente por algunas personas en mi “Oikos” para llegar a conocer a Cristo, agradezco la ayuda de mi célula en la oración también. Los miembros de mi célula me ayudaron evangelizar a mi hermano-en-ley y mi sobrino. Ambos vinieron a Cristo por el trabajo en equipo. Una pareja pidió que mi sobrino le trabajaba por y el y luego subieron la montaña juntos. Otros miembros desarrollaron relaciones con ellos en la célula. Poco a poco mi hermano-en-ley y mi sobrino recibieron a Cristo como salvador y toda la célula regocijaron.

Pescando con una red puede traer una gran captura de peces. No es una tarea solitaria, sino que debe ser realizado por un equipo. Esto es cierto en muchos aspectos con el evangelismo celular también. La célula puede desarrollar relaciones en la comunidad y ministrar juntos. Hemos usado el curso de Alpha para pescar con una red en la célula. Hemos realizado barbacoas también.

En el caso del barbacoa, la célula selecciona una casa especfica y todos los miembros invitan a amigos para el evento. Los invitados pueden llevar comida también, si quieren. Toda la célula ayuda con la comida, los juegos, la conversación informal, y la limpieza. La clave es establecer la comunidad y orar que los inconversos pueden ver el amor de Cristo. Un grupo puede hacer mucho más en un barrio que una sola persona pueda. ¿Qué piensa usted?

Lo lindo de pescar con una red es que hay mucho gozo en el proceso. Se construye la confianza y de la comunidad de la célula y abre nuevas puertas para alcanzar a los inconversos. ¿Qué está haciendo tu celular juntos para llegar a su comunidad para Cristo?
