Cell Meeting or Lesson?

Do we really need to have icebreakers and worship in order to have life change through a cell?

God can do life change any way he wants to and he uses our various life experiences to grow us as his disciples. When you think about your significant life changes didn’t they involve the Holy Spirit applying the Word of God to your life; connection to others who even challenged your faith or held you accountable; prayer and the prayer support of loving friends and family; and your openness to God’s voice in your life?

Some people describe the “meat” of the cell as the “Bible lesson.” But wait. Isn’t the life of the cell in the connection to Christ and his Body? Have you ever thought that the icebreaker was just a simple warm-up to cover the snack time at the beginning of a meeting? If so, you did not realize how important this relational time is to our connection to Christ and the Word. As we open up our stories to one another, we are encouraging the opening of our stories to the Lord. l learn new things about your life, and I allow you to see through the window into my life with the icebreaker. This connection opens us up to a time of worship and prayer that can actually be the “meat” of the “lesson.”

Too many small groups just work on the “lesson” from the Scripture for that session. This is good, but there is more. In a cell, we want to touch the head and the heart. Too much Bible study is just focused on the head. Even the application questions can be answered with head knowledge. But the opening and worship times in a cell connect our heads with our hearts. A simple icebreaker about the heating in your childhood home may open memories of experiences that were touched by joy or pain. What does God want more from us: worship or study? Isn’t the goal of our life to glorify God?

For me, the opening sharing and the worship are the meat of the meeting. They have transformed our study of the Bible into something that enables us to touch the heart of God and one another. Come to think of it, that was what Jesus described as the two commandments: love God and love one another.

In nearly forty years of ministry, I have been to many small groups and Bible studies. Many had great conversation and even significant times of prayer. Yet, when I observe the influence of the opening icebreaker which leads to personal sharing and the significant time of worship that draws us into the presence of God, I cannot see ever reducing or dropping these two pieces of the cell meeting. They contribute to the life change taught in the Scriptures. The Word of God is powerful, God breathed, and makes a difference in our lives when we are open to the Spirit’s application (II Timothy 3:16-17). When we pray for one another, listen to one another, care for one another, and love the Lord with one another, the Word comes alive in us. Don’t ever let the opening get cut short to get to the “lesson.” You will probably miss “The Lesson” if you do.

1 thought on “Cell Meeting or Lesson?

  • I come to believe that if we had the 10, 15 or the 20 people participating at a cell group, share their view about how or what would be the right ice breaker, we would just have as many different views! Then I would like to ask if we assume that these people are a mixed group, which includes grown up, newly born believers and unbelievers, and then what are they feeding on! Let’s also try to see in the spirit what have Jesus and the disciples used as ice breakers. At one point Jesus and the disiples were the speakers and the other people just asked questions and shared their needs. If we relay on the Holy Spirit to lead the unsaved to be used as teachers, then why have a Cell leader? Don’t we trust the Holy Spirit? …I believe that one thing it’s to break the ice so people feel free to share their needs and we can allow the Holy Spirit to minister to them, but another thing it’s to believe that they can lead us to worship God properly. The other most important thing to remember it’s the fact that we must allow the Holy Spirit to lead us, and not to speak our brain out in every situation as is they were all the same. We all need to listen to His leading, but most of all it’s the leader who need to be listening to the Holy Spirit..
