When Two Or Three Are Gathered. . .

“On the evening of that first day of the week, when the disciples were together, with the doors locked for fear of the Jews, Jesus came and stood among them and said, “Peace be with you!” After he said this, he showed them his hands and side. The disciples were overjoyed when they saw the Lord. (John 20:19-20)

The presence of Jesus transformed the disciples’ gathering and the disciples themselves. Isn’t this what we hope happens in our groups? You’ve probably experienced cell meetings that were simply religious discussions and others in which the presence of Jesus was evident to all. There is really no comparison.

I hope that when the members of my group walk away from our meetings they sense that they have encountered Jesus. This is why the worship time is  important to a cell meeting.

Group members often arrive at the meetings mentally and physically scattered after a long day at work, household duties, and other activities. When we spend a few minutes at the beginning of our group in a worship song and prayer, it centers people and opens them afresh to the Lord. It changes the tone of the meeting and opens them to the presence of Jesus. This won’t scare away new people, as long as we explain what we are going to do and remind them they can simply listen if they like.

If we rush through the opening of the meeting to get to the Bible discussion, it may well be that all we get is conversation. But if we take a few moments to open ourselves to the presence of Jesus, he will do more than we could have planned.

Donde dos o tres estén reunidos. . . .
