Worship in the Cell Group

When Elim started cell ministry in 1986, it was established that we would not allow the free flow of the gifts of the Spirit unless a pastor was present. Because cells multiplied rapidly, it became increasingly difficult for a pastor to be present in each cell. In practical terms, we began to de-emphasize the gifts of the Spirit in the cell group and relegated them to the larger celebration gatherings. This means that for more than 25 years, gifts such as speaking in tongues, the interpretation of tongues, prophecy and the exercise of the other gifts were suppressed. For this reason, the time of praise and worship in the cell group became the starting point and nothing more.

However, after several years reflecting on the subject, I concluded that we had left out of our system an important component of the Christian worship and the best tools for building up the body of Christ. I talked about the issue with our church’s district pastors, and we concluded that it was best to open the door to the exercise of the gifts of the Spirit in the cells. The aspect of the order within the cell would be preserved in the same way that Paul preserved it: by instruction.

In our last annual conference for leaders and coaches, I made a presentation on the topic and gave the necessary instruction for the proper use and regulation of the gifts to the brethren. But most important, we encouraged them to seek the manifestation of the gifts in the cell. There is no doubt that within cell ministry, the Holy Spirit can manifest himself when He pleases. But the best moment is during praise. In recent months, the praise and worship time in our cell groups have become more dynamic–and not just a way to start the meeting. Today it is a time when the Holy Spirit can manifest himself as he pleases. This makes the praise become alive and deeply felt. The cells now experience a special renewal and people look forward to what the Spirit will do in their midst.
