Working with Children in the Cell Church

It is often said that “children are the future of the church.” But such a claim could lead to the misconception that you have to wait for children to turn into adults to become the church. It is true that children will become adults in the future–that is, at some indefinite time in the years to come.

In our case, we have changed the phrase to this one: “If children are not our present, the church has no future.” Here the focus shifts from future to present. Moreover, the future that lies ahead can only be ensured with the actions taken in the present. Children should be the focus of attention right now. What you do with them is what will define what the church will be tomorrow.

One important aspect of children’s ministry is children’s cell groups. These cells evangelize those outside the church, transform lives, and create fellowship for the children of the church. Children’s cells mentor the new generation of children and youth that become the emerging leaders. Children’s cells work hand in glove with the adult cells and have similar purposes, evaluations and church-wide goals.

Even in the physical installations at Elim, we show our commitment to children by spending money on top quality equipment and facilities (prioritizing these facilities over the adult ones). And the leaders of children’s cells receive much broader training than the adult cell leaders.

We at Elim have invested heavily in our children because we know that the church’s future is wrapped up in today’s children.

El trabajo con los niños en la iglesia celular

Frecuentemente se dice “los niños son el futuro de la iglesia”. Pero, tal afirmación, podra llevar a la idea equivocada que hay que esperar que esos niños se vuelvan adultos para que lleguen a convertirse en iglesia. Eso ocurrirá en el futuro, es decir, en un momento indeterminado que se ubica en algún punto de la nebulosa de los años por venir.

En nuestro caso, hemos cambiado la frase por esta otra: “Si los niños no son el presente, la iglesia no tiene futuro.” Aqu el enfoque cambia del futuro hacia el presente. Es más, el futuro que se avecina solo puede asegurarse con las acciones que se tomen en el presente. Los niños deben ser un foco de atención ahora mismo. Lo que se haga con ellos es lo que definirá lo que la iglesia sea mañana.

Uno de los importantes aspectos de esa focalización en los niños es el trabajo con las células infantiles. Éstas tienen como propósito la evangelización, la edificación y la comunión con los niños de la iglesia. Es un proceso de mentoreo de las nuevas generación que los convierte en lderes emergentes. El trabajo de las células infantiles se encuentra en igualdad de condiciones con las células de adultos y son parte de las metas, evaluaciones y proyecciones de la iglesia. En el tema de las celebraciones se busca la excelencia y se dota de instalaciones y equipo un poco mejores que los que se utilizan en el auditorio de los adultos. Los lderes infantiles reciben una capacitación mucho más amplia que los lderes de adultos. La niñez juega un papal esencial en nuestra iglesia y un esfuerzo muy amplio se invierte en ella. Si no lo hacemos de esa manera, nuestra iglesia no tendrá futuro.
