Be Careful NOT to Take the Parents Out!

God has designed the family to nurture the hearts of a generation to love God. The family exists, even in its imperfection, to display the heart of God to the emerging generation.

One author suggests: “They [church and family] both exist because God desires to use them to demonstrate His plan of redemption and restoration…If they work together they can potentially make a greater impact than if they work alone. They need each other. Too much is at stake for either one to fail.”

We believe that parents are the primary disciplers of the children. Therefore, we desire to see youth attend a cell group with their parents. In such an environment, a young person has the opportunity to relate with his/her peers and develop relationships with spiritual aunts, uncles, and grandparents.

With that said, we do have youth cells in which the majority of the attenders are youth. However, parents are encouraged to come. And we are finding that a consistent invite to parents to attend such a cell is working. Further, our youth gather once a month on a Wednesday night to enjoy a time of worship and teaching. Again, parents are always invited to this gathering.

Adam McManus suggests: " American Christians are finally waking up to the disconnect between the clear teaching in Scripture in favor of family-integration and the modern-day church’s obsession with dividing the family at every turn. Age segregation, especially during the tender and impactful teenage years, not only hasn’t worked, it’s been detrimental. Even worse, it is contrary to the Bible. But the good news is that practices in the churches related to youth groups are changing dramatically. Twenty years ago no one was even asking this question."

Cameron Cole, youth director at Cathedral Church of the Advent in Birmingham, Ala., says, "There is a propensity in our culture to outsource the development of our children. For intellectual development, we send them to school. For athletic development, we send them to Little League. And for spiritual formation, we send them to youth group. The church has done a poor job of communicating to the parents that they are the primary disciplers of their children. Parents don’t believe this, but the reality is that kids listen to their parents far more than they’re going to listen to a youth minister."

So….my caution to you is this: Be careful not to take the parents out. Do a calculation concerning the amount of hours a parent has with a child. Contrast that time to the hours a child is attending school, church events, and extracurricular events. Strike out the hours when your child is sleeping at night. You will discover that a parent has an enormous opportunity to impact his/her child with the things of God.

Let’s grow up the emerging generation according to God’s plan for you and your church family. And let’s come alongside parents as the primary disciplers of their children.

  • Rob, Well done! Your life and church family are a superb demonstration of the content here. Hats off to your commitment to parents as the key disciplers of their children.

  • I agree wholeheartedly with your thoughts in this. I get stuck though knowing that in many situations the parents are no where to be seen and those kids need the community of the church even more so, because they don’t have the community of the family. In our fairly large (for our town) youth group we see only two families in our church that have kids in the age group to attend. One is the senior pastors children, so really one family from the congregation. ALL of the other kids come from extremely broken situations where the parents don’t care where they are, much less what they’re doing. Although we consistently try and reach out to them, the reality is that it doesn’t always have much fruit.

  • Good feedback from Oona and certainly we all wrestle with the reality that you have presented. Go with what has given you praying in roads to the parents. It will be neat to see how God works and provides. AND good for you for reaching these young people.
