The Secret of Cell Ministry, part 2

When we understand that you cannot patch old wineskins, and that cells that attach like barnacles to the hulls of traditional churches drag it down, the secret of a cell church becomes obvious. The Body must reveal the Indwelling Christ. That is its only purpose.

Equipping believers must focus on these areas:

1. How are believers prepared to be priests who prophesy?

Prophesying requires believers to be trained how to hear needs in others, while receiving spiritual gifts from Christ to exactly touch those needs. Prophesying causes a body member to be connected simultaneously to the Source and the Need. “The Spirit of the Lord is upon me; He has anointed me to . . .”

Thus, the venue for learning this requires the cell itself, not a sermon or a classroom. This equipping ministry is an experience, not a cognitive action. A Cell Leader must help the cell develop a confessional trust where 1 John 1:9 is literally performed. Then theleader must help the cell members learn how to distinguish between man-inspired “advice” and Spirit-anointed energizings, where the unbeliever will sense “God is certainly among you!” This is a process that we have found after a cell has gone through the Conflict Stage and has entered the Trust Stage.

We have found the power of the Triads within the home cell creates this best. Using 1 John 2:12-14, forming members into a Father discipling a Youth discipling a Child make a great Triad! Other versions of these spiritual levels can also be formed.

2. How do we make it possible for Christ to fulfill His new mission:
to draw all men to Himself?

Jesus gave his disciples the pattern in Luke 10. Wherever God’s people have followed it, there is natural growth. He reveals His life in you when you enter a household by twos. He is always the Inner Third Person who is revealed as householders observe the actions of the two.

He further taught that we do not profit much by short visits: “eat and drink with the household.” Why? This gives unbelievers opportunity to see the agape that you reveal within you. Finally, when you sense there is a person searching for peace, it is then time to offer your peace! Once the first person comes to faith, Jesus told us to stay on, because salvation travels through oikoses: “Believe on the Lord Jesus Christ, and you and your family will be saved.”

The gospel always travels through family groups! Thus, following Jesus’ guidance, we now see how the “unbeliever” and “ungifted one” appear in the home cell meeting.

We have learned that if the Father and the Youth (1 John 2:12-14) will enter the home of the new believer, they have a natural entry through an existing member of the group. In the Ukraine, at present we are seeing this biblical application of reaching into households to reveal the Indwelling Christ is producing an astonishing harvest.

The secret is this: a cell is not a weekly meeting. It is revealing the presence and power of the indwelling Christ in its gatherings and in its penetrating of households.

O Segredo do Ministério Celular, parte 2

  • Bro. Ralph,

Thank you for your obedience to God’s purpose for your life. Your life’s experiences have been a major influence and confirmation of God’s purpose for my life.

In your inspirational post you write, “This is a process that we have found after a cell has gone through the Conflict Stage and has entered the Trust Stage.”

Speaking from years of experience in both; traditional and cell-based churches, I believe the biggest hurdle for the church to overcome is America’s mindset of ‘political correctness’, which we have brought into the church, that insists we ‘avoid conflict at all costs’. I wholeheartedly believe, a cell group is not an ‘authentic’ [emphasis upon authentic] body of Christ until in enters into and resolves conflict as Jesus instructs in Matthew 18:15-20.

In his book, The Road Less Traveled, M. Scott Peck writes, “The essential dynamic of pseudo-community is conflict-avoidance. The absence of conflict in a group is not by itself diagnostic. Genuine communities may experience lovely and sometimes lengthy periods free from conflict. But that is because they have learned how to deal with conflict rather than avoid it. Pseudo-community is conflict-avoiding; true community is conflict-resolving.”

Personally, I get excited whenever I sense conflict rising within a cell-group because I see the presence of conflict as a litmus test revealing the true health of the cell-group. Furthermore, I take issue with this prevailing mindset among misinformed Christian that ‘wherever two or three gather in Jesus name, He is there with them”, which they mistakenly believe that by merely being present in a cell-group equates to being an authentic body of Christ. I take issue with this mindset because taking this verse out of the context–Matthew 18:15-20–perpetuates sin within the church resulting in unhealthy churches.

True/authentic Christian community embraces conflict, invites Jesus into our presence in the conflict, and biblically resolves conflict. We, the church, must learn how to deal with conflict. Only then will we enter into trusting relationships and becomes an authentic body of Christ.

    Sharing the Journey,
