The Role of Children and Youth in Cell Ministry

I want to interpret cell multiplication from a futuristic point of view. When children grow up in an intergenerational cell atmosphere, they participate in all stages of cell life. They learn to worship, share, live community life, pray for specific needs, and participate in prayer answers and often miracles. Children become teen agers and have already formed a life style and cell culture. It is in their blood and DNA.

When they become youth, they are ready to lead a cell. They have all the experience they need and have formed the habit of cell life. With some further equipping in leadership, they are ready to fly. This means, once the cell culture has been adopted by the church long-term, the wheel of multiplication will turn almost by itself. The Pastor has only to do the normal maintenance in oiling the machine.

These former children, now leaders, have learned that a cell has to grow in order to multiply. Multiplication is not traumatic to them. They understand it and are able to explain it to the new converts, showing them that multiplication is actually critical to the cell. I’m referring, of course, to healthy multiplication and not only numbers.

For adult new converts to become leaders, it’s much harder because it requires step-by-step instruction, discipleship, and so forth.

Help us God to prioritize the children and youth,

  • Thanks, Robert, for this great reminder! This is often a difficult value for many North Americans to understand and implement. I’d love to hear more from you, Joel, or others on ways to develop this value in a culture that doesn’t get it.

  • Excellent article from Robert. It’s so true. If we can start with the children and then youth, we will have a strong group of future leaders who can multiply groups. And you’re right, Michael, North America lags behind. When I wrote my 2015 book, “Children in Cell Ministry,” I was originally going to start with the North American scene but later decided against it because of the abundance of wonderful examples overseas. In other words, we in the West need to humbly learn from how cell churches worldwide are developing intergenerational cells and even “children only” cells. And there are some encouraging signs among the pastors I’m coaching in North America. It really isn’t rocket science to invite children to an adult cell and to ask them to go into another room for their cell lesson. I would count this as a cell group from the church. And I remember when CEF (Child Evangelism Fellowship) was training leaders to start children cell groups in homes after school (much of this has change), but the principles that cell churches are using are very similar.
