Finding the Person of Peace

michael

By Michel Sove

1 Peter 3:15 (NIV) “But in your hearts set apart Christ as Lord. Always be prepared to give an answer to everyone who asks you to give the reason for the hope that you have. But do this with gentleness and respect”

Everywhere I go I go with the mindset that I am God’s ambassador. Everywhere I go I go with the expectation that the “Person of Peace” (those open to the Message of the Kingdom) may be present. But how do we find them; how will we know?

Let me tell you an amazing story I call the “Pete” story. One day after getting stirred by a message at Founders Week in Chicago, I went out into my town, Crown Point, Indiana, at the time. I was determined to find someone who would be open to the message.

I went to the local McDonalds and as I went in I prayed, “Lord , show me someone here who needs You in their life. Open a door of opportunity and I will walk through it as You lead.” As I sat there I saw a man with crutches sitting in the corner talking with a bunch of guys. The Lord impressed on me to refill his coffee when he needed it, so he wouldn’t have to hobble over for it. So as I saw him trying to get up for more coffee I brought the pot over to him, and that opened the door to introduce myself and meet Pete.

Day after day I went back to the same place at the same time and sure enough Pete was there sitting with the guys. After the guys left I would sit and talk with Pete and very quickly was able to share my story/testimony. He listened to me and gave me the name “preacher boy” from that day forward. Every day I would return and talk with Pete and share what God was doing in my life, asking him about his life and how I could pray for him.

Next week I will continue this story but for now I want to share some practical principles about finding the man or woman of peace.

Pray and go expecting – The harvest is plentiful but the workers are few. We need to be willing to go and represent Christ. As we go, we are to pray for eyes to see. Expect God to show you the man or woman of peace. He is not willing that any should perish.

Look for needs to meet – One of the greatest ways to see a door open for conversation is to meet a need. Look and listen and you’ll be amazed at all the potential opportunities to assist, encourage or pray for those around you.

Frequent the same places – People are creatures of habit and if you go to the same places at the same time you will begin to build relationships and know people by name.

Share your story – People are open and like to hear stories, so ask if you can tell your story. Your personal testimony is a powerful tool in God’s hands.

Ask how you can pray for them – People like to be prayed for, so ask how you can pray for them and the next time you see them ask about what you prayed for. This conversation opens many doors and shows you care.

I currently have three places I frequent and keep my eyes open for the man/woman of peace. Yes, I still frequent the McDonalds in town, I take walks in my neighborhood and I play golf seeking to meet people and get to know them by name. I’m praying daily for those I’ve met and watching for opportunities to share. Finding the person of peace is an exciting daily adventure. What ideas do you have?

Dream Team

michael

By Michael Sove

The dream of my heart is to form a team of reproducing disciple-makers. Some would call it a G-12 or a discipleship cell. This would be a group of leaders I have raised up, who are leading their own open cells and raising others in their cells to go out and do likewise.

But that is my dream and I’m just starting to walk toward it. What I have right now is my open cell. This open cell has the purpose of evangelism and is a fishing pool for potential leaders. Since I see everyone as a potential leader I’m trying to develop all the people in my cell to whatever level they are willing to be developed.

Last night nine men gathered for the cell that meets weekly at my home. This cell contains three brand new believers who are less than four months old in Christ. I want to involve them from the very beginning so they see their potential and value to our community and God’s kingdom. So as a group we do some things together as a team. For example, once a month we serve as outside greeters at one of our Sunday services. Once a quarter we serve together on a servant evangelism project in our community that we choose as a team. It is in those settings I can see things like faithfulness, passion and gifts in action.

I learn a lot by watching how the guys function as a team. Each week we take turns bringing refreshments. I break the larger group into teams of three for prayer and ministry to one another. I always mix the groups so they contain new believers and experienced believers. It is through these simple tasks and small sub groups that I can learn much about those I’m trying to develop. I can see potential and areas needing more development.

Within my larger cell I have two people who I share some of the larger tasks with. Things like leading worship, facilitating discussion, caring for people within the cell. I look to them for sharing the leadership of the cell. We are truly a team. All the men of our cell are being pointed toward our discipleship process which includes our Consolidation and School of Leaders tracks. The more people I can get through the discipleship process who are getting practical experience within the cell, the greater the chance we’ll plant more reproducing cells from my current open cell.

When these guys launch their own cells they will now become the first members of my dream team. What are you doing in your cell to develop your dream team?

Threshold Ministry – Entering Their Home / Sharing Yours

michael

by Michael Sove

This week as I personally reviewed the passages of Jesus’ ministry in homes, it became very evident that He understood the power of walking across thresholds into homes where people lived. It was in these settings He could interact and minister to real needs of people in a relaxed setting.

Sometimes He gathered with his disciples in a home where He gave further explanation and insight into His public teaching. Homes are a great place for gathering with your core, those you are discipling and raising to be disciple-makers themselves. I want those I’m discipling to interact with me in my home to know me and see me function in my home and neighborhood. It is a perfect setting to share my passion, dreams and even struggles.

Mark10:10 ” When they were in the house again, the disciples asked Jesus about this.”

In other situations He understood the value of mixing with a new believer’s oikos or circle of influence. One of the most fertile fields for reaching people is to meet the friends, families, neighbors and co-workers of those who have recently turned to Christ. I look for any opportunity to meet those connected to new believers; going where they are and inviting them to interact with my friends as well.

Matt 9:10 “While Jesus was having dinner at Matthew’s house, many tax collectors and sinners came and ate with him and his disciples.”

Then I noticed that Jesus went to the homes of rulers, Pharisees and even followers to minister life and healing. They didn’t come to Him; He went to them. I keep an ear open to what is happening in the lives of my neighbors and friends. Then I try to go and express concern, meet a need, offer a prayer do anything to take the kingdom of God to them.

Luke 14:1 “One Sabbath, when Jesus went to eat in the house of a prominent Pharisee, he was being carefully watched.”

Jesus modeled the power of threshold ministry. Let people cross your threshold and look for ways to cross theirs. Wherever we go we take Jesus and wherever Jesus goes, lives are changed forever.

When a Person Needs More

michael

By Michael Sove

As I stated last week, most needs can be met through the cell church structure as it relates to people becoming healthy and whole. But there are occasions where people need more professional help than we can deliver.

It usually doesn’t take long to discern when a person needs help beyond what your current system can deliver. I’ve seen people bounce from cell to cell and the cell leaders asking for help and advice in handling this problem person. If the cell leader has done all they know how to do, then we as staff will get involved and try to mediate. It might be at that point we determine this person needs to receive one on one counseling with a staff person.

We have five full time pastors on our staff, and each of us will take turns sharing the load if a person needs some help. At our weekly staff meeting, we may receive an assignment to meet with a particular person. If one of us already has a relationship with that person, we try to work along those lines. We will always meet with them at least once to discern their level of need.

Our first goal is to see if they are saved and have a daily relationship with the Lord. If they do, we seek to determine if they are part of a cell group as well as attending the Sunday worship service. Again if they are involved at that level, most of their needs will be met. We try to make sure they understand that.

If their needs are greater, we have developed a list of local counselors, and even have a few that are part of our congregation that we can refer people to. For example when it comes to marriage counseling, we have a few people we refer them to.

Right now in this economy we have many who are unemployed and really struggling. We offer some benevolence but seek to help them do all they can do to find employment and get on their feet.

So based on the level of need, we do all we can as a local church to meet those needs and then to point people in the right direction. But we also refer people without hesitation to other professionals who are specialists in the area they may need help in.

Once people are stabilized and out of their crisis, we work hard at getting them into our on-going structure which is focused on helping people grow as a disciple to the point they can pass the help on to someone else, and thereby becoming a contributor and not just a taker.

I do feel that 95% of the problems can be dealt with through cells and the cell church system. What do you think?

Make the Most of Every Opportunity

michael

By Michael Sove

We are challenged by Scripture in Col 4:5 “Be wise in the way you act toward outsiders; make the most of every opportunity.” This verse refers to the way we live before and interact with non-believers and it encourages us to be wise in these interactions. We can have more influence on people than we tend to imagine.

I want to encourage you to “make the most of every opportunity” as it relates to the edification opportunities found in your cell structure as well. 1 Thess 5:11 “Therefore encourage one another and build each other up, just as in fact you are doing.”

Being part of a functioning cell church gives the average person many opportunities to be built up and encouraged. As people are built up and encouraged they will grow and most of their spiritual needs will be met. This will alleviate the need for formal counseling for most people, for the most part.

Here are some opportunities for edification in the typical cell church structure:

#1 As you gather weekly for worship. Arrive 15 minutes early and stay 15 minutes after with the sole purpose of greeting and encouraging people.

#2 During your cell gathering time. At every point in your evening as you see opportunities to minister to needs, take the time to minister to people on the spot. We always break up into men and women for that portion of our evening so we can minister to each other at a deeper level. But all throughout the evening we stay sensitive to the Holy Spirit as it relates to needs that are being expressed by people.

#3 All throughout the week. Remember in a cell church it is not just about the two formal gatherings of cell and celebration but it is doing life together. The more we edify and care for one another outside the meetings, the more people will be helped and healed at their deepest needs.

#4 One-on-one mentoring/accountability. The greatest change I’ve seen in people and their growth has been through mentoring relationships. There is something about spending time face to face weekly with a person that benefits both parties. This is a great opportunity to speak into each other’s lives and sharpen each other, spiritually speaking. Most people need a listening ear and someone to help process things with.

#5 Encounter God Weekends. So much healing comes from weekend retreats that seek to help the individuals find freedom from bondage and past hurts. I have seen so much healing come from an Encounter God Weekend. As people step into freedom they become so much more productive in the kingdom.

Make the most of every opportunity to edify people and to be edified yourself through the cell church structure. It will give opportunities for all to be made whole and prepared to make a difference themselves in someone else’s life.

What other opportunities would you add to my list?

¿Qué otras oportunidades agregaras a mi lista?

Michael
