Cuando me encomendaron de escribir este artículo sobre las diez iglesias celulares más grandes del mundo, inmediatamente estuve de acuerdo con el proyecto. Cuando empecé la investigación, encontré que era una tarea desalentadora y cambié de idea. Después de todo, no hay ninguna lista adonde consultar y usar como punto de lanzamiento.

Antes de meterme en los números, permítame compartir unos pensamientos importantes con usted.

Mi investigación anterior en las iglesias celulares exitosas alrededor del mundo era útil, pero yo tenía que consultar con otros. Debido a las distintas maneras como las iglesias cuentan los grupos y se organizan, yo tenía que presentar cifras exacta y equilibradas en mis resultados. Uno de mis consejeros era Mikel Neumann, el autor de Grupos de los Hogares para las Culturas Urbanas. Cuándo me puse en contacto con él por la información, él dijo: “¿Quién puede rastrear las iglesias celulares más grandes del mundo? Sólo Dios sabe”. [i] Otro consultor en mi lista era David Barret, el experto en el crecimiento del Cristianismo y editor de la Enciclopedia Cristiana Mundial. Él me dio este consejo: “Tenga cuidado de dar un cuadro completo. Quizás ninguna persona por sí sola entiende todo sobre estas iglesias. Hay tanto que hay que elegir con cuidado.” [ii]

Las Congregaciones Solas Contra las Satélites

Al principio decidí incluir sólo esas iglesias celulares que reúnen a todos los miembros celulares para un evento de celebración semanal en un lugar (y por supuesto, la reunión de los grupos celulares semanalmente en los distintos hogares). Sin embargo, al hacer esto yo habría excluido la famosa iglesia celular del Pastor Dion Robert, La Iglesia Bautista de los Trabajos y la Misión. Esta iglesia se reúne en centenares de iglesias satélites que consiste en 150,000 personas, con sólo 6,000 reuniéndose en un lugar. Otras iglesias celulares grandes siguen un modelo similar. Para ser justo, decidí hacer una lista de las diez iglesias celulares más importantes que tienen una celebración en una reunión semanal y después una lista diferente de tres para comparar esas iglesias que se reúnen en las iglesias satélites esparcidas a lo largo de todo el país (aunque mantienen sólo una cuenta estadística).

Una Cosa Más . . .

Mientras lee este artículo, sepa que lo he escrito en un estilo que es descriptivo (aquí está lo que yo encontré), en lugar de ser prescriptivo (hágalo de esta manera). Yo no estoy diciendo que una estrategia es mejor que la otra. Personalmente, estoy cada vez más atraído a plantar iglesias celulares más pequeñas antes de alcanzar el tamaño de estas iglesias celulares del tamaño de toda la ciudad.

Este artículo sólo trata de las iglesias en el mundo libre. Sólo Dios sabe el tamaño de las iglesias en los hogares flojamente conectadas de China y otras áreas restringidas.

Una debilidad de este estudio es la falta de información del grupo celular en dos de las diez iglesias celulares principales listadas debajo. Lo intenté, pero no logré reunir esta información

Las Iglesias Celulares Más Importantes Hoy

Estas iglesias reúnen a los miembros en un evento de celebración semanal, con múltiples servicios.

El movimiento celular coreano

Usted notará que cuatro de las iglesias listadas están ubicadas en Corea. La Iglesia del Pleno Evangelio Yoido es la primera de la lista. IPEY es por lejos la iglesia más grande del mundo, y, yo creo, la iglesia más grande en la historia del Cristianismo. [iii] En 1964 David Cho literalmente se derrumbó de agotamiento, intentando hacer el trabajo de un Moisés. En su lecho de muerte, Dios le mostró el modelo bíblico para dirigir la iglesia, llegando así a ser el precursor del movimiento de la iglesia celular moderna.

Yo visité IPEY en 1997. Mientras estuve allí, recogí un folleto que describía el sistema celular de esta manera: “La célula en las casas ha sido la columna vertebral de la Iglesia del Pleno Evangelio Yoido. Cualquier iglesia que desea implementar este concepto tiene que ser completamente reorganizada en una iglesia basada en células . . . El domingo, usted asistirá también a uno de los servicios principales de adoración, una experiencia que lo convencerá del poder de la célula en las casas. . . . Las células en las casas son dirigidas por personas laicas, aunque el entrenamiento es proporcionado por el pastor.” [iv]

Sorprendentemente – o quizás no – el hermano de David Cho, Young Mok Cho, dirige la segunda iglesia más grande en el mundo. Los dos siguen el mismo sistema celular. De hecho, el modelo de la iglesia celular que Cho empezó se sigue por cada una de las iglesias celulares coreanas que aparecen en la lista de las diez iglesias celulares más importantes. [v]

El movimiento Celular en América del Sur

La Misión Carismática Internacional en Bogotá, Colombia y la Iglesia de Elim, localizada en San Salvador, El Salvador tienen una asistencia casi iguales. A la vez sus filosofías celulares son muy diferentes.

Séptimo en la lista es la iglesia Lluvias de Gracia en la Ciudad de Guatemala con 20,000 personas que asisten en cualquier fin de semana dado. El pastor, Edmundo Madrid, había oído hablar previamente del concepto de la iglesia celular de David Cho, pero creyó que un sistema así no funcionaría en América Latina. Se quedaron asombrados cuando oyeron hablar del éxito de la Iglesia de Elim con el modelo de Cho en el país vecino de El Salvador. Algunos todavía decían que no funcionaría en Guatemala, pero esta iglesia ha demostrado que los críticos estaban equivocados. La vida de la iglesia tiene lugar en miles de grupos pequeños, y también durante el culto del domingo. La iglesia también ha plantado 125 iglesias celulares en todo el mundo. Mi contacto, Luis Floriano, escribió: “Otras iglesias en Guatemala están aprendiendo ahora también que lo imposible es posible, y no es raro para las iglesias que antes tenían 80 miembros que ahora cuenten con 300 o 400.” [viii]

El Movimiento Celular en la Anterior República Soviética

Octavo en la lista es una iglesia celular en Kiev, Ucrania llamada Iglesia Palabra de Fe. Esta iglesia, pastoreada por Sunday Adelajiah, es la iglesia más grande en todas las Anteriores Repúblicas Soviéticas. Esta iglesia celular ha crecido exponencialmente a 20,000 miembros desde que implementó el modelo de G-12. [ix]

El Movimiento Celular de Asia Sur Oriental

Noveno en la lista es la Iglesia Familia de Dios en Solo, Indonesia. El pastor titular, Obaja Tanto Setiawan, ha llevado esta iglesia de 273 células en febrero de 1999 a más de un 1,000 hoy día. El movimiento empezó hace 10 años, y actualmente tiene 12,000 en sus cultos de adoración semanales. Esta iglesia también ha plantado 25 iglesias hijas en el último año. La clave ha sido la implementación de los principios de doce, que ellos enseñan ahora en los seminarios celulares. Un pastor indonesio, fuertemente influenciado por esta iglesia, dijo: “Durante años, he tratado de desarrollar nuestros grupos celulares, pero sólo teníamos 100 grupos celulares. En enero de 2000, aprendimos y empezamos a aplicar ‘el Principio de Doce.’ Y ahora después de 4 meses, hemos crecido de 100 grupos celulares a 415 grupos celulares. Ésta es una explosión para nuestro “crecimiento de la iglesia. [x]

Décimo es la Iglesia Bautista Comunidad de Fe que empezó en 1986 con 600 personas. Con la ayuda de Ralph Neighbour, el 1 de mayo de 1988 la iglesia fue totalmente reestructurada para llegar a ser una iglesia celular. Doce años después, la iglesia ha crecido a 11,000 adoradores los domingos y 700 grupos celulares. La iglesia está siendo un ejemplo del ministerio de la iglesia celular al resto de Asia, con una conferencia de la iglesia celular anual que atrae a miles de pastores. [xi]

Las Tres Iglesias Celulares Satélites Principales

Esta lista compara algunas de las iglesias celulares más grandes del mundo que se reúnen en iglesias satélites esparcidas a lo largo del país (pero mantienen sólo una cuenta estadística):

  1. La Iglesia Bautista de los Trabajos y Misión, Costa de Marfil, África,
    • 150,0000 en los cultos de adoración;
    • Cientos de iglesias satélites en todo el mundo;
    • 18,000 grupos celulares en el mundo
  2. Igreja Mana, Lisboa, Portugal,
    • 60,000 en los cultos de adoración;
    • 400 iglesias satélites;
    • 4,000 células.
  3. Comunidad Nueva Vida, Bombay, India,
    • 50,000 en los cultos de adoración;
    • 250 iglesias satélites;
    • 1,200 células

El lugar #1 va para Dion Robert: La Iglesia Bautista Trabajos y Misión. El evento de la celebración en la Iglesia Bautista Trabajos y Misión iglesia madre atrae a unos 6,000 adoradores cada domingo. Sin embargo, la Iglesia Bautista Trabajos y Misión tiene 56 iglesias satélites locales solo en la ciudad importante de Abiyán y muchos más a lo largo del país. Un total de 18,000 células (14,000 células adultas y aproximadamente 4,000 células de niños) forma la base de la iglesia. Hay un sistema de gobierno y administración de la célula más pequeña en Francia hasta el Templo en Abiyán. Todos los informes, responsabilidad ante otros, etc. vuelven a la iglesia madre. Las iglesias locales no son independientes. Cada iglesia local tiene exactamente la misma estructura departamental y finalmente informa nuevamente a Abiyán.

Les Brickman que hizo su disertación doctoral en la Universidad del Regente sobre la Iglesia Bautista Trabajos y Misión, dice: “Esta iglesia ha experimentado un crecimiento cuantitativo y cualitativo desde su principio en 1975. Con más de 150,000 miembros en todo el mundo, ha demostrado tener éxito en el contexto de la cultura africana y no-africana, después de haber plantado las iglesias en 34% de naciones africanas actuales así como en Europa y América del Norte.” [xii]

La iglesia #2 es la Igreja Mana, pastoreada por George Tadeau. La sede de esta iglesia grande está en Lisboa, Portugal. Esta iglesia celular creciente tiene aproximadamente 50,000 a 60,000 adoradores que se reúnen en las 400 iglesias satélites. Sin embargo, los 4,000 grupos celulares proporcionan el cuidado íntimo para los miembros. Aunque estas iglesias satélites están íntimamente conectadas entre si, la mayor reunión en un lugar para un culto de adoración del domingo es aproximadamente 8,000 personas. [xiii]

El lugar #3 pertenece a la Comunidad Nueva Vida, localizado en Bombay, India. El pastor titular y fundador de la iglesia es S. Joseph. Mikel Nuemann que hizo un estudio de esta iglesia cree que, “la Comunidad Nueva Vida en Bombay podría tocar 50,000 fácilmente en un domingo en sus múltiples sitios.” [xiv] La iglesia empezó en 1968, pero por 1980 sólo tenía 100 en su asistencia. En 1990, la iglesia dio énfasis al establecimiento de iglesias en las casas e iglesias satélites a lo largo de Bombay. Hay aproximadamente 1,200 iglesias en las casas ahora en 250 culto y centros de celebración. La iglesia posee pocas propiedades. Todos los centros para la adoración son alquilados y los grupos en las casas se reúnen en los hogares. Incluso las oficinas de la iglesia son alquiladas. [xv]

Iglesias Celulares que Merecen una Mención Honorable

Mientras ciertas iglesias celulares destacan como las Secoyas gigantes, no pasemos por alto el resto del hermoso bosque. Muchos robles poderosos demandan nuestra atención y la mayoría de todas dan la gloria al Dios vivo.

Las Iglesias Celulares de EE.UU.

No se desanime porque América del Norte no está incluido en la lista de diez. En realidad, cosas emocionantes están pasando en la iglesia celular norteamericana. el Centro de la Oración Mundial Betania en Baker, Louisiana ha crecido de ser una iglesia respetable de veinticinco grupos de “compañerismo” creciendo hacia adentro a una iglesia dinámica de 700 grupos celulares multiplicadores con 8,000 adoradores del domingo. Esta iglesia disipa el mito de que las iglesias celulares simplemente no funcionan en Norte América.

Betania no está sola. Otra iglesia celular norteamericana tiene un número de registro para el Templo de Victoria norteamericana en Tulsa, Oklahoma tiene casi 12,000 en su asistencia a los cultos y 1,000 células. La Puerta de Esperanza, AK, la Iglesia de las Naciones, GA, la Iglesia de la Piedra Angular, VA, la Iglesia Bautista de Colonial Hills, MS, la Iglesia de Clear Point, TX, la Iglesia de Dios Long Reach, MD, son ejemplos de iglesias celulares saludables, crecientes. Éstas simplemente son algunas de las iglesias celulares relativamente más pequeñas, pero creciendo rápidamente, en este país. ¡Anímese!

Las Iglesias Celulares de Asia

Las iglesias celulares de Hong Kong han establecido un precedente excelente conectándose en una red para compartir los recursos y para alcanzar mejor un mundo perdido para Jesús juntos. Ben Wong dejó su iglesia celular creciente en Hong Kong (Pastor Community) para dirigir la Red de la Iglesia Celular HK que se vincula aproximadamente 160 iglesias celulares para compartir ideas y recursos para alcanzar más eficazmente los grupos de personas restantes no alcanzados.

La Iglesia City Harvest en Singapur de 11,000 miembros, pastoreada por Hee Kong, es una iglesia celular que registra unas 400 decisiones semanales para Cristo. Con aproximadamente 500 grupos celulares, esta iglesia se compromete a alcanzar a Singapur con el evangelio. [xvi]

Comparado con Singapur, el crecimiento de la iglesia en Tailandia casi no existen. Después de 100 años de servicio misionero protestante, menos de 0.5% de la población es cristiana. Sin embargo, hay una excepción notable. La Iglesia Esperanza de Bangkok ha crecido a 9,000 adoradores y 1,000 grupos celulares. Este ejemplifica a la iglesia cómo Dios está usando la estrategia de la iglesia celular. [xvii]

Las Iglesias Celulares de África del Sur

En África del Sur, unas 3,000 iglesias están haciendo la transición a la iglesia celular y en algunos casos, están bastante avanzados. Mi visita a África del Sur me puso en contacto con el Centro Cristiano del Faro en Capetown (600 células, 7,000 adoradores); la Iglesia Familiar Cristiana en Johannesburgo (690 células, 6,000 adoradores), Centro Cristiano de Avivamiento en Bloemfontein (500 células, 5000 adoradores) y Centro Cristiano Little Falls (400 células, 4,000 adoradores).

El movimiento de celular de África del Sur es único en que cientos de iglesias tienen han realizado la transición juntos. Los líderes principales de las grandes denominaciones, bien establecidas – con el apoyo arrollador de todas las iglesias adentro – hicieron un cambio completo de transición a las estructuras de las iglesias basadas en células.

Las Iglesias Celulares Europeas y de la República Soviética anterior

Dios está trabajando en lo que fue la antigua U.S.S.R. Chuck Squeri que está comprometido para conectar una red y para entrenar a las iglesias celulares en la ex Unión Soviética dice: “La iglesia más grande en todo Rusia es una iglesia celular. Tiene 3,000 miembros y 150 grupos celulares y tiene conferencias periódicas de la iglesia celular.” [xviii] La Iglesia más grande en la parte sur de las repúblicas soviéticas anteriores (Uzbekistán) es la Iglesia de Dios Tash Kent (10,000 miembros 1,000 grupos celulares). Incluso en medio de la persecución, esta iglesia sigue floreciendo.

La Iglesia de Fe está ubicada en Budapest, Hungría, y vale la pena mencionarla. Esta iglesia, pastoreada por el Pastor Nameth, está creciendo rápidamente en este ex país comunista. Hay aproximadamente 63 células en las casas en Budapest, con un promedio de asistencia los domingos de aproximadamente 5,000 personas. Hay aproximadamente 40,000 creyentes involucrados en la Iglesia de Fe en todo el país. [xix]

Las Iglesias Celulares Latinoamericanas

Tres de las diez iglesias principales del mundo están en América Latina (Elim, MCI, y Lluvias de Gracia). Sin embargo, este artículo no estaría completo sin reconocer el movimiento celular dinámico que tiene lugar en Brasil. Hay unas 2,000 iglesias brasileñas que están explotando con el crecimiento de la iglesia celular. Neville Chamberlin, el director de la Red de Misiones de la Iglesia Celular, informa lo siguiente “. . denominaciones enteras, como los Bautistas y Asambleas de Dios, están decidiendo realizar la transición de todas sus iglesias – cientos de ellas – a las células. . . ” [xx]

¿Cómo Llegaron a Ser Tan Grandes Estas Iglesias?

Todas las iglesias aquí tienen varios valores comunes. Sus valores comunes muestran claramente por qué ellos son tan grandes y exitosos en construir el reino de Dios.

Ellos valoran la oración. A la oración se le da una alta prioridad y muchos miembros pasan una porción generosa de cada día y/o semana en oración. Esto es donde ellos reciben una pasión aumentada por los perdidos, ven su potencial para el liderazgo y disfrutan de señales milagrosas y maravillas.

Su propósito en la vida es clara. Los miembros de estas iglesias entienden que glorificar a Dios y alcanzar a los perdidos trae una satisfacción mayor que cualquier otra actividad. La vida familiar está integrada totalmente en la vida celular; ir a trabajar es por la provisión financiera y no se ve tanto como una que “construye una carrera” sino como un campo misionero en su propia casa.

El liderazgo es para todos. Cuando se salvan las almas, los nuevos convertidos son discipulados para llegar a ser discipuladores de otros y más adelante líderes de grupo. No está reservado para unos pocos privilegiados. La visión para llegar a ser un líder empieza inmediatamente después de la conversión, y hay un sentido de urgencia para echar afuera los miedos y fortalezas que impiden que un nuevo creyente entre en el liderazgo.

¿Más Grande Es Mejor?

El propósito de este artículo es entusiasmarlo sobre lo que Dios está haciendo a través del movimiento de la iglesia celular. Ciertamente no es para “hilar demasiado fino” acerca de cuál iglesia es la más grande o la mejor. ¡Lejos de pensarlo! Dios se mueve de maneras misteriosas. En realidad, muchas iglesias celulares conscientemente han decidido plantar iglesias celulares más pequeñas, en lugar de concentrarse en crecer para tener un culto de celebración madre enorme. El punto más importante es que Dios está interesado en alcanzar un mundo perdido, agonizante para Su Hijo Jesucristo. De hecho, ésa es la razón misma por la cual Él no ha venido antes.

El fenómeno de la iglesia celular está aquí para quedarse. Puede ser que su iglesia nunca será caracterizada como una de las iglesias más grandes del mundo. Pero usted es parte de la iglesia más grande del mundo. . . ¡la iglesia de Jesucristo! Adopte los valores de las iglesias en esta lista y usted verá que cosas increíbles pasarán en su vida y la vida de su iglesia. Mientras usted enfoca en la oración, haciendo realidad su propósito para alcanzar a los perdidos y levantando a los líderes, su iglesia florecerá y crecerá. ¡Dispóngase a luchar y disfrute el paseo!

Ten Largest Cell Churches

When I was commissioned to write this article on the ten largest cell churches in the world, I immediately agreed to the project. As I began the research, I found it to be a daunting task and had second thoughts. After all, there are no lists from which to refer and use as a launching point.

Before I jump into the numbers, let me share a few important thoughts with you. My previous research into successful cell churches around the world was useful, but I needed to consult with others. Due to the various ways churches count groups and organize themselves, I had to remain accurate and balanced in the presentation of my findings. One of my advisors was Mikel Neumann, author of Home Groups for Urban Cultures. When I contacted him for information, he said, “Who can track the world’s largest cell churches? Only God knows.”[i] Another consultant on my list was David Barret, expert on the growth of Christianity and editor of the World Christian Encyclopedia. He offered this advice: “Be careful to give the whole picture. Perhaps no single person understands everything about these churches. There is a lot of picking and choosing to do.” [ii]

Single vs. Satellite Congregations

I originally decided to include only those cell churches that gather all cell members for a weekly celebration event in one place (and of course, the cell groups meeting weekly in various homes). Yet, by doing this I would have excluded Pastor Dion Robert’s famous cell church, The Works and Mission Baptist Church. This church meets in

hundreds of satellite churches, that consist of 150,000 people, with only 6,000 meeting in one place. Other huge cell churches follow a similar model. For the sake of fairness, I decided to make a top ten list that compared those cell churches that celebrate in one weekly gathering and then a different top three list to compare those churches that meet in scattered satellite churches throughout the country (yet maintain only one statistical count).

One More Thing. . .

As you read this article, know that I’ve written it in a style that is descriptive (here’s what I found), rather than prescriptive (do it this way). I’m not saying that one strategy is better than another. Personally, I’m increasingly attracted to planting smaller cell churches before reaching the size of these citywide cell churches. This article only discusses churches in the free world. Only God knows the size of the loosely connected house churches of China and other restricted areas. One weakness of this study is the lack of cell group information in two of the top ten cell churches listed below. I tried, but failed to collect this information Whew! With all this prefaced, here’s the list!

The Top Cell Churches Today

These churches gather members in one weekly celebration event, with multiple services.

  1. Yoido Full Gospel, Korea
  2. 250,000 in worship attendance;
  3. 25,000 cell groups.
  4. Grace & Truth, Korea
  5. 105,000 in worship attendance;
  6. Over 1,000 cell groups.
  7. The International Charismatic Mission, Colombia;
  8. 50,000 in worship attendance;
  9. 20,000 cell groups;
  10. 150,000 cell attendance (G12 model)
  11. Kum Ran Methodist, Korea
  12. 50,000 in worship attendance;
  13. 2,700 cells. 5. Nambu Full Gospel, Korea
  14. 47,000 in worship attendance;
  15. Number of cell groups unavailable.
  16. Elim Christian, El Salvador
  17. 40,000 in worship attendance;
  18. 11,000 cell groups;
  19. 110,000 cell attendance.
  20. Showers of Grace, Guatemala
  21. 25,000 in worship attendance;
  22. 1,000+ cell groups;
  23. 15,000 cell attendance.

The Korean cell movement

You’ll notice that four of the churches listed are located in Korea. Yoido Full Gospel Church tops the list. YFGC is by far the largest church in the world, and, I believe, the largest church in the history of Christianity. [iii] In 1964 David Cho literally collapsed of exhaustion, trying to do the work of a Moses. On his deathbed, God showed him the Biblical model for running the church, thus becoming the forerunner of the modern cell church movement.I visited YFGC in 1997. While there, I picked up a pamphlet that described the cell system this way: “The home cell has been the backbone of Yoido Full Gospel Church. Any church that wishes to implement this concept has to be completely reorganized into a cell-based church. . . . On Sunday, you will also attend one of the main worship services, an experience that will convince you of the power of the home cell. . . . Home cells are run by lay people, though training is provided by the pastor.” [iv]

Surprisingly – or perhaps not -David Cho’s brother, Young Mok Cho, leads the second largest church in the world. Both follow the same cell system. In fact, the cell church model that Cho started is followed by each of the Korean cell churches that appear on the top ten cell church list. [v]

The South American Cell movement

Third on the list is the International Charismatic Mission in Bogota, Colombia. 50,000 people attend the four weekly weekend services that meet in the city’s indoor stadium. Approximately 150,000 people attend the 20,000 weekly cell groups. The cell groups at ICM penetrate the entire city, and like a giant net, eventually gather those attending the cells into the celebration services. The “Groups of 12” care structure originated with ICM, and this exciting principle is now being reinvented in hundreds of cell churches throughout the world. [vi]Sixth on the list is the Elim Church, located in San Salvador, El Salvador. Between 35,000-40,000 people attend the weekly Sunday celebration services. Yet, three times as many people attend the 11,000 cell groups during the week (approximately 110,000). I estimated that 600 rented public buses brought the faithful to the Sunday celebration services from all over the city (the cell groups rent the buses for the day). I was amazed at Elim’s professional statistical reporting. By Monday morning, the church knows exactly how many people met in the 11,000 cell groups.[vii] Seventh on the list is the Showers of Grace church in Guatemala City with 20,000 people attending on any given weekend. The pastor, Edmundo Madrid, had previously heard of David Cho’s cell church concept, but believed that such a system would not work in Latin America. They were shocked to hear of the Elim Church’s success with Cho’s model in neighboring El Salvador. Some still said that it would not work in Guatemala, but this church has proved the critics wrong. Church life takes place in thousands of small groups, as well as during the Sunday worship. The church has also planted 125 cell churches throughout the world. My contact, Luis Floriano, wrote, “Other churches in Guatemala are now also learning that the impossible is possible, and it is not uncommon for churches which previously had 80 members to now number 300 or 400.” [viii]

The former Soviet Republic Cell Movement

Eighth on the list is a cell church in Kiev, Ukraine called the Word of Faith Church. This church, pastored by Sunday Adelajiah, is the largest church in all of the Former Soviet Republics. This cell church has grown exponentially to 20,000 members since implementing the G-12 model. [ix]

The South East Asian Cell Movement

Ninth on the list is the Family of God Church in Solo, Indonesia. The senior pastor, Obaja Tanto Setiawan, has led this church from 273 cells in February 1999 to more than a 1,000 today. The movement began 10 years ago, and currently has 12,000 in their weekly worship services. This church has also planted 25 daughter churches in the last year. The key has been implementing the principles of twelve, which they now teach in cell seminars. One Indonesian pastor, heavily influenced by this church, said, “For years, I have tried to develop our cell groups, but we only had 100 cell groups. On January 2000, we learned and started to apply the ‘Principle of Twelve.’ And now after 4 months, we have grown from 100 cell groups to 415 cell groups. This is an explosion for our church growth.” [x] Tenth is Faith Community Baptist Church, which started in 1986 with 600 people. With the help of Ralph Neighbour, on May 1, 1988 the church totally restructured itself to become a cell church. Twelve years later, the church has grown to 11,000 Sunday worshippers and 700 cell groups. The church is exemplifying cell church ministry to the rest of Asia, holding an annual cell church conference that attracts thousands of pastors. [xi]

Top Three Satellite Cell churches

This list compares some of world’s largest cell churches that meet in scattered satellite churches throughout the country (yet maintain only one statistical count):

  1. The Works and Mission Baptist Church, Ivory Coast, Africa
  2. 150,0000 in worship services;
  3. Hundreds of satellite churches throughout the world;
  4. 18,000 worldwide cell groups.
  5. Igreja Mana, Lisbon, Portugal
  6. 60,000 in worship services;
  7. 400 satellite churches;
  8. 4,000 cells.
  9. New Life Fellowship, Bombay, India
  10. 50,000 in worship services;
  11. 250 satellite churches;
  12. 1,200 cells

The #1 spot goes to Dion Robert’s The Works and Mission Baptist Church. The celebration event in the mother church attracts some 6,000 worshippers each Sunday. However, the Works and Mission Baptist Church has 56 local satellite churches in the capital city of Abidjan alone and many more throughout the country. A total of 18,000 cells (14,000 adult cells and about 4,000 children’s cells) form the basis of the church. There is one system of government and administration from the smallest cell in France to the Temple in Abidjan. All reports, accountability, etc. filter back to the mother church. The local churches are not independent. Each local church has exactly the same departmental structure and ultimately report back to Abidjan. Les Brickman, who did his doctoral dissertation at Regent University on the Works and Mission Baptist Church says, “This church has experienced quantitative and qualitative growth since its inception in 1975. With over 150,000 members worldwide, it has proven to be successful in the context of both African and non-African culture, having planted churches in 34% of current African nations as well as in Europe and North America.” [xii] The # 2 church is the Igreja Mana, pastored by George Tadeau. The headquarters of this huge church is Lisbon, Portugal. This growing cell church has about 50,000 to 60,000 worshippers that meet in the 400 satellite churches. Yet, the 4,000 cell groups provide intimate care for the members. Although these satellite churches are intimately connected to one another, the largest gathering in one spot for a Sunday worship service is approximately 8,000 people.[xiii] The #3 spot belongs to New Life Fellowship, located in Bombay, India. The senior pastor and founder of the church is S. Joseph. Mikel Nuemann, who did a case study on this church, believes that, “New Life Fellowship in Bombay could easily touch 50,000 on a Sunday in their multiple sites.” [xiv] The church started in 1968, but by 1980 only had 100 in attendance. In 1990, the church emphasized planting house churches and satellite churches throughout Bombay. There are now approximately 1,200 house churches in 250 worship and celebration centers. The church owns little property. All worship centers are rented and the house groups meet in homes. Even the church offices are rented. [xv]

Cell Churches Deserving an Honorable Mention

While certain cell churches stand out as giant Redwoods, let’s not pass over the rest of the beautiful forest. Many mighty oaks demand our attention and most of all give glory to the living God.

U.S. Cell Churches

Don’t be discouraged because North America isn’t included in the top ten list. In reality, exciting things are happening in the North American cell church. Bethany World Prayer Center in Baker, Louisiana has grown from a respectable church of twenty-five ingrown “fellowship” groups to a dynamic church of 700 multiplying cell groups with 8,000 Sunday worshippers. This church dispels the myth that cell churches just don’t work in America.Bethany is not alone. Another North American cell church has a record number for the U.S. Victory Temple in Tulsa, Oklahoma has nearly 12,000 in worship attendance and 1,000 cells. Door of Hope, AK, Church of the Nations, GA, Cornerstone Church, VA, Colonial Hills Baptist Church, MS, Clear Point Church, TX, Long Reach Church of God, MD, are examples of healthy, growing cell churches. These are just a few of the relatively smaller, yet rapidly growing cell churches in this country. Be encouraged!

Asian Cell Churches

Hong Kong cell churches have set an outstanding precedent by networking together to share resources and better reach a lost world for Jesus. Ben Wong left his growing Hong Kong cell church (Shepherd Community) to direct the HK Cell Church Network, which links approximately 160 cell churches to share ideas and resources to more effectively reach the remaining unreached people groups.The 11,000 member City Harvest Church in Singapore, pastored by Hee Kong, is a cell church that registers some 400 weekly decisions for Christ. With approximately 500 cell groups, this church is committed to reaching Singapore with the gospel. [xvi] Compared to Singapore, church growth in Thailand is almost non-existent. After 100 years of Protestant missionary service, less than 0.5% of the population is Christian. Yet, there is one notable exception. The Hope of Bangkok Church has grown to 9,000 worshippers and 1,000 cell groups. This church exemplifys how God is using the cell church strategy.[xvii]

South African Cell Churches

In South Africa, some 3,000 churches are making the cell church transition and some cases, they are quite advanced. My visit to South Africa brought me into contact with the Lighthouse Christian Centre in Cape Town (600 cells, 7,000 worshippers); the Christian Family Church in Johannesburg (690 cells, 6,000 worshippers), Christian Revival Centre in Bloemfontein (500 cells, 5000 worshippers) and Little Falls Christian Centre (400 cells, 4,000worshippers).The South African cell movement is unique in that hundreds of churches have transitioned together. The senior leaders of large, well established denominations – with overwhelming support from all the churches within — made a complete transitional shift to cell-based church structures.

European/ former Soviet Republic Cell Churches

God is working in the former U.S.S.R. Chuck Squeri, who is committed to network and train cell churches in the former Soviet Union says, “The largest church in all of Russia is a cell church. It has 3,000 members and 150 cell groups and holds regular cell church conferences.”[xviii] The largest Church in the southern part of the former Soviet republics (Uzbekistan) is the Church of God Tash Kent (10,000 members 1,000 cell groups). Even in the midst of persecution, this church continues to flourish. Faith Church is located in Budapest Hungary, and worth mentioning. This church, pastored by Pastor Nameth, is growing rapidly in this former communist country. There are about 63 home-cells in Budapest, with an average Sunday meeting of approximately 5,000 people. There are about 40,000 believers involved in Faith Church all over the country.[xix]

Latin American Cell Churches

Three of the world’s top ten churches are in Latin America (Elim, ICM, & Showers of Grace). However, this article wouldn’t be complete without acknowledging the dynamic cell movement taking place in Brazil. There are some 2,000 Brazilian churches exploding with cell church growth, Neville Chamberlin, director of the Cell Church Missions Network, reports, “. . . whole denominations, like the Baptists and Assemblies of God, are deciding to transition to all their churches – hundreds of them – to cells. . .” [xx]

How Did These Churches Get So Large?

All the churches here have a number of common values. The commonalities clearly show why they are so large and successful at building the kingdom of God.

They value prayer. Prayer is given a high priority and many members spend a generous portion of each day and/or week in prayer. This is where they receive an increased passion for the lost, see their leadership potential and enjoy miraculous signs and wonders. Their purpose in life is clear. The members of these churches understand that glorifying God and reaching the lost brings greater satisfaction than any other activity. Family life is fully integrated into cell life; going to work is for financial provision and is not seen as much as a “career builder” as a home mission field.

Leadership is for everyone. As souls are saved, new converts are discipled to become disciplers of others and then group leaders. It is not reserved for a privileged few. The vision to become a leader begins immediately after conversion, and there is a sense of urgency to cast off the fears and strongholds that keep a new believer from moving into leadership.

Is Bigger Better?

The purpose of this article is to excite you about what God is doing through the cell church movement. It’s certainly not to “split hairs” about what church is bigger or better. Perish the thought! God moves in mysterious ways. In fact, many cell churches have consciously decided to plant smaller cell churches, instead of concentrating on growing a huge mother celebration service. The most important point is that God is interested in reaching a lost, dying world for His Son Jesus Christ. In fact, that’s the very reason why He hasn’t come sooner.The cell church phenomenon is here to stay. It may be that your church will never be featured as one of the largest churches in the world. But you are part of the largest church in the world . . . the church of Jesus Christ! Adopt the values of the churches listed here and you will see incredible things happen in your life and the life of your church. As you focus on prayer, living out your purpose to reach the lost and raising up leaders, your church will flourish and grow. Jump in the fray and enjoy the ride!

[xi] Victory Temple in Tulsa, Oklahoma may have more in worship attendance and cell groups than Faith Community Baptist Church (in reality, it’s my guess that the size of both churches are about the same). However, I took the liberty to place Faith Community Baptist in the tenth spot because of their cell church influence throughout the world.
