Protecting the Cell

By Joel Comiskey, Myths and Truths of the Cell Church

We hear a lot about rogue viruses and the dangers of AI. You most likely have active protection if you have a computer or cell phone.

Have you had someone try to scam you? Hackers and computer thieves are becoming increasingly sophisticated. Celyce and I recently took out an identity theft policy to prevent someone else from taking over our identity. We live in a strange new world where we must take security seriously.

What about small group ministry? It’s not just a ministry; it’s the backbone of the cell church. What can we do to protect our cell groups? Recently, a pastor bemoaned how rebellious people love to take their cells in a distorted direction, even leaving the church. Last month, we talked about the cell, which is the church. If so, how do we protect individual cells from becoming rebellious?

For May, we’ll explore the topic of cell protection. Click here if you’d like to receive these blogs in your email inbox. Seasoned leaders will write twenty blogs on issues such as:

May 05-11: Concentration: Small groups occur during the week (out-of-site), so they can often become “out-of-mind.” However, as leaders, it’s our responsibility to protect them properly. I recommend discussing cell groups as the first item on the pastoral team agenda.

May 12-18: Accountability through weekly reporting:  Weekly reports help pastors and leaders focus on the one-anothers. Weekly reporting is not a tedious task or a number per se, but rather the goal of being faithful to what God has given us (examples: Jacob being loyal to his unfaithful uncle, David caring for his flock against wild animals, and Jesus mentioning the lost sheep)

May 19-25: Supervision and regular cell leader gatherings. The cells must be protected through regular care, and cell leaders should feel free to talk about their cells—good and bad.

May 26 to June 01: Integrating cell with celebration. It’s a great idea to highlight the cell groups in the celebration. Each cell can rotate in giving announcements on Sunday.
