Why Pray?

In light of Joel’s post yesterday and the comforting comments that this blog community wrote to Joel concerning his father’s salvation and passing, let me pose the following question:

WHY PRAY?  Consider some of my thoughts.

First, to neglect prayer is a sin against God.

“…Far be it from me that I should sin against the Lord by failing to pray for you.”  I Sam. 12:23

Next, to share God’s perspective on his purposes.

“When I tried to understand all this, it was oppressive to me till I entered the sanctuary of God; then I understood their final destiny.” Psalm 73:16-17

Third, to acknowledge dependence on Him, His leading and provision.

“Blessed are the poor in spirit, for theirs is the kingdom of heaven.” Matthew 5:3

Fourth, to see God working in your life.

“Call to Me, and I will answer you, and tell you great and mighty things which you do not know.”  Jer. 33:3

Finally, to express your love to the Lord.

“I love the Lord, for he heard my voice; he heard my cry for mercy.  Because he turned his ear to me, I will call on him as long as I live.” Psalm 116:1-2

NOW, A QUESTION.

Share with this blog community one creative way in which you pray for/with each other.

A few sentences or a short paragraph would be great!

  • I guess prayer for me is being aware of the constant presence of our father,
simply saying goodmornig as I drive to work each day.
acnowledging his presence, asking for guidance for the day to come, and thanking god for the provision and healing that he has already provided.
As well as standing firm on the word and understanding our authority as sons and daughters of the most high god.
One resource that I have found really helpful for prayer are the “Creative Power” booklets by Charles Capps.

  • I am commenting on this post just having returned from a prayer meeting at my church. We are seeking to specifically listen to God and acquire a vision for our parish as we transition to a cell group ministry. When I think of prayer I think of the pictures of a child on Jesus’ lap. The child does not care how they sound, they know they are just present with their parent. But Our Father is very much present with us. In our prayer meetings, we ask the Holy Spirit to really help us hear the Father. Tonight words and prophetic utterances were continually being poured out. We feel comforted that we are being led by the Good Shepherd. In short, I believe prayer is something I am continually learning more about as I trust myself with the help of the Holy Spirit!

  • One good way for me to remember to pray for the people in my cell/zone etc is to take a casual picture of them during a body life event. I then place them on my screen saver,so I am reminded often of them and when the time is right, between projects etc it is a good opportunity to pray for them and also remember a good time with them….. maybe a bit weird but it works for me

  • “Why pray?” In 50 years walking with the Lord, I have heard that only once. It was from an elderly evangelical who had been raised on systematic theology that stressed God’s sovereign decrees to the exclusion of God’s sovereign right to command. He added: “If God is going to do what he decreed, anyway, then why bother to try to change His mind?” One could not fault that man’s logic, only his abstract theology.
In making cheerful disciples of the Lord Jesus, should we not obey him and teach others to do the same? Pray to God, using Jesus’ name, because our sovereign Lord has commanded us to do so! Those who pray obediently soon discover many other reasons to pray: God works, God answers, God rewards, God shares his joy, God shows himself alive, God grants insight, God strengthens, God acts…

  • When I think of prayer, I think of Jesus in the Garden of Gesemethe. Why that? Because this is where he got total victory over the self will. He would not have been successful at paying the price, if he had not submitted there in the garden. We to will never be successful at fulfilling out purpose if we do not have this type of committment and dedication to prayer. It took him three times of prayer sessions in the garden, to say yes to His Fathers will. There you can see His flesh did not want to perfom the will of God. Walking out the will of God for our lives is not the easiest all the time, but our Lord and Savior Jesus, said that he prayed for us, so that our faith will not fail us, so prayer is the key to our success in reaching our destiny. If Jesus defeated the Self Will, so can we!
