Hindrances to Oikos Outreach

joelThis entire month on the JCG blog we’ve been talking about how to reach out to our oikos. We’ve talked about how to reach out, but what are some of the hindrances to oikos outreach. Here are a few that come to mind:

  • Self-effort: Like Mario said in his blog last Thursday, conversion is a supernatural event that only God can accomplish. If God doesn’t save a person, it simply won’t take place. It’s important to develop friendship with unbelievers, but it’s even more essential to pray fervently that God works. I talked to a Jewish convert (Tim) in east London two weeks ago. He told me that a fellow engineer (John) befriended him and even took him to several Christian events. Over the course of many months, Tim accepted Jesus and eventually joined John’s church. When Tim enter the church, everyone smiled, shook his hand, and treated him like an old-time friend. Later Tim found out that John had recruited the church to pray for Tim’s salvation (the church knew all about Tim!). So while John was befriending Tim, the church was praying. And this is the one-two combo that we must use to see the conversion of our oikos.
  • Not working with God: God wants to save people more than we do. Jesus talked about finding the person of peace (Like 9 & 10). Our job is to discover where God is already working and work with God. Last week, two pastors came over to my house for coaching. Rob Hasting (Big Bear Christian Center) shared his vision of “helping each person come one step closer to Jesus.” Rob explained that his strategy included non-Christians, pointing to the Engle Scale as an example. In reality, our job is to help our oikos take the next step in their journey toward Christ.
  • Busyness: God has given each of us oikos contacts. We need to find ways to develop those oikos relationships, so that they might come to know Jesus. For most of us, we’ll need to make the time to develop those oikos contacts. We’ll need to take time out of our busy schedules to reach out. What are you doing to reach those oikos relationships that God has brought into your lives?

Can you think of other hindrances to oikos outreach?

Penetrating Our Oikos

mario

by Mario Vega

The circle of influence or oikos is the immediate sphere of responsibility for every Christian. It is also the place where the believer is salt and light. Some Christians do not have a clear idea of the extent of their influence and end up neglecting the opportunity to evangelize. Not only are we responsible for our own actions, we are also responsible for all those we influence. For this reason, it’s important to know the extent of our influence and then determine how we can best shine our light.

As we think about our workplace, family, and friendships, we will discover that we have more influence than we sometimes imagine. This is also true of our neighborhood.

Once those oikos relationships are identified, we must continue to pray for those people we want to bring to Christ. Conversion is a supernatural event that goes beyond all human possibility. If God does not save a person, no one will be able to do it on their own strength.

It is necessary to deepen friendships with those we know best. You can always do something to get closer to other people. In doing so, you will discover that everyone has a specific unmet need. When we discover what that need is, we must then walk the extra mile–doing something for that person that no one else will do. When you go the extra mile, you will leave an impression on the other person that will prepare the ground for the reception of God’s Word.

Penetrando Nuestro Oikos.

Developing your Oikos

bill

by Bill Joukhadar

If you are serious about wanting to see your Oikos develop – seeing unchurched friends coming to the Lord, there are bag-loads of clever tips on offer. I could start by suggesting to you a number of ‘external’ principles, such as: regularly practice the power of prayer, engage in practical acts of service that target needs, plan fun-social activities, spend regular time with those you hope to reach … in their world, dress the gospel message in simple to understand street clothes (and be ready to give an explanation of your faith, when asked), exercise patience and perseverance – with a determination to never giving-up, don’t be manipulative, and make sure that ‘love’ is what motivates your actions.

Whilst these principles are essential, and should be a part of your overall ‘Oikos 101 development strategy’, I believe the place to begin in seeing your Oikos develop is the place of ‘self-evaluation’. Self-evaluation, involves the consideration of ‘internal’ principles that examine the condition of the servant, before considering the methods of service. The Lord is the Saviour of the world … salvation is His business! He’s the One who does the rescuing. Your part in seeing your Oikos develop is making sure you remain ‘fit’ for the Master’s use … spiritually clean and available (His invisible hand, in His physical glove – your life!).

When you invite the Holy Spirit to keep the inside of your life scrubbed-clean, the fullness of the Lord’s light shines out, and His love flows fully and freely. There is nothing more attractive to the unsaved than the likeness of the Lord that is reflected from our lives, and there is nothing more powerful than agape love, overflowing from Christ-centered, surrendered hearts.

Seeing your Oikos develop … begins within you.

Oikos Defines a Cell’s Mission Field (part 1)

ralph

by Ralph Neighbour

When God formed mankind to dwell in family groups (oikoses) He planned His love to travel from person to person within them. Love and sacrifice is the foundation of oikos life.

Each believer has a personal mission field: the oikos members. Typically, cell members will have from 8 to 12 persons in their Primary oikoses. “Primary” is a sociological term indicating that this cell member will spend a total of 60 minutes of direct conversation, spread over 7 days, with each Primary person.

In the same way, each cell group has a special mission field. Consider how every cell group is comprised of multiple oikoses. They compose the extent of influence assigned to that cell. E.G., If eleven people compose one cell, and they average ten persons per oikos, their “mission field” will have 110 people in it! That is the total of Primary people they relate to, the group they will reach with their testimony.

Paul wrote in 2 Corinthians 10:13: “We . . . will not boast beyond proper limits, but will confine our boasting to the sphere of service God himself has assigned to us . . .” The word “limits” in this verse is the Greek word kanon, meaning “closed.”

Every cell group should understand they cannot reach people they are not attached to, and God has uniquely attached them to a mission field they are responsible to reach. When it dawns on a cell group that they are the only ones in the world that can share Christ’s love with the 110 in their oikoses, their sphere of service becomes clear.

The cell members should spend significant time arranging for all the other cell members to get acquainted with their relatives and friends. Moving the cell from house to house is one way to get it started. But when all the eleven become friends with the 110, amazing dynamics begin to take place. Community is born as everyone knows everyone else. Opportunity for participating in each other’s lives opens the doors for invitations to attend cell group meetings.

Every cell group should create a “Blessing List” with the names of the cell members in one column and the names of the Primary oikos people next to them. Focus on these names and events taking place in their lives should direct the cell to serve them in every possible way. Who is having a birthday? Should the cell meet in that home and have a party for the person? Is someone’s child going to play in a piano recital? Should the cell all attend? Can there be a cookout where the 110 can participate as desired? The gospel travels through loving relationships where servant life is demonstrated.

Do more than meet needs of family members. Also seek their assistance in helping with needs and problems you have. That’s what Jesus did at Jacob’s Well: “Can you help me drink?” More about that in my next blog…

Prayer, Love, Acceptance

jeff

by Jeff Tunnell

Prayer, Love, Acceptance, Forgiveness, Kindness, Honesty, Sincerity, Openness, Service, Consistency, Transparency, Willingness, etc.  My thought; if we have received the love of God first, and then allow Him to touch our hearts with what touches His, coming to the realization that all we take with us to heaven is people, not stuff, or careers, or houses, or lands, then we will begin to search out ways to connect with those He has placed around us.  We write down their names (the blogs last week had much to say about this activity), and pray over them, intercede for them, pushing back the ‘god of this world who has blinded their eyes’ and set them free in the spirit.  As the blinders come off, be prepared for making an invitation to the weekly cell gathering and watch the Holy Spirit draw them to the Savior (re-presented by the body members in the cell).

It has been stated by wiser people than me;  our oikos is won first to me in friendship, then to my cell group, then to Christ.  Encourage your cell family to work together in attracting individuals and families that have been ministered to by prayer first.  The spiritual resistance is lower and receptivity higher.  Make one of your meetings a special time for visitors by planning together how you will serve and minister especially to these new friends.  Set a goal of when you will do this and get busy!!

You may also discover their most pressing need(s) and focus your love and service there, modeling the servant life of Christ.  It is HARD to resist those items listed in my first sentence above, so let God live His life through you, manifesting His character, and get ready for a harvest.

Jeff
