Dealing with the Obstacles (part 2)

By Lorna Jenkins

Many adults treasure the times of worship in the cell groups, and fear that the children will disrupt it. Actually children love worship too once they have learned how to worship and why we worship. The children need to know the worship songs and be taught how to respond to them. Children are quick learners when it comes to leading worship, and with a little help and coaching they can lead the worship themselves. Even with the younger children, they can hold the words, or play a simple instrument, or press the computer to move the song along.

Safety issues are usually an issue when adults meet with children. An intergenerational cell is one of the safest places in the church for the children. When the parents are present they can be watchful for their children. Other adults share the responsibility of protecting the children from any kind of abusive behavior. This is one area in which the cell leader needs to know what to do if any behavior seems worrisome.

For some people their cell group is a very special and private part of their lives, and they are afraid that the children will talk about personal things. Once you explain to children that every person’s story belongs to them and you don’t tell other friends about it, I have found that children can be very careful in what they say to others. Breaks in confidentiality are more likely to come from the older people. We develop a culture of caring for each other by being trustworthy. Remember trust is a two-way street. Sometimes the children also have things which they don’t want to be talked about outside. Parents are often tempted to tell the group members things that the children would have preferred to keep to themselves.

In cell groups where the only adult present is a leader, many of these problems do not arise. The greatest problem is teaching the group how include children of different ages. In a group which is reaching out to community children, this is actually an advantage, because new children do not like to be separated into age-groups. For all the children the mixed –age community is a strong model of care and responsibility. Children are given tasks appropriate to their age and there are other children to help and encourage. A back-up leader can help sort out disputes, but after a while the community of children becomes its own adviser.

Many of the problems that people see in having children in cell groups, reflect the fears of adults. It’s new ground for everyone so we have to learn as we go. However the Holy Spirit is capable of teaching children as well as adults. Before Him we are all learners.

Dealing with the Obstacles (part 1)

By Lorna Jenkins

When you tell people about the wonderful things that happen when children are included in cell groups, most people are amazed and excited. When you start to suggest that children should be included in their cell group, the enthusiasm dies suddenly. Ask ten cell members and you will get ten reasons why the children shouldn’t be there.

Some people are alarmed at the great gap in intellectual understanding. They think the children will be bored. In practice I have found that if the group is too boring for the children, it is probably boring for the adults too. Children do not have to be “having fun” all the time.
They love to be respected and included. We do have to learn to use words the children can understand but telling stories about the events of our lives is always interesting to the children. Sadly in some families, the children have never heard the story of how their parents came to faith, or even how God has answered their prayers.

Children can participate in most of the cell activities. They love the icebreakers and they can lead them. They can be empowered to worship and to pray. Children learn to pray by copying adults in prayer. In one city I found a large group of children who were praying up a storm. “How did you teach your children to pray with such fervor?” I asked their leader. Her reply was, “They have never heard anyone pray any other way.” They learn from the culture they live in.

At the time of sharing the word, many groups like the children to have a separate study led by an adult or teenager. This is optional but it seems to work well in a number of churches. If the cell group is held in the evening some younger children may need an afternoon sleep first. If a child falls asleep in the group, it’s O.K. They’re in the family.

Older people often fear that the children will be too wild and noisy. It can happen if the children are uncontrolled. But in a cell group everyone in the group can be models for the children. Other adults can help to hold the children or choose them as partners. The children look up to the adults in the group and want to please them. If an older person struggles with the presence of the children, it is a good idea for them to meet with the child outside of the cell group. They may visit at a time when they can help. They can do a task together, even drying the dishes. As the older person gets to know the children, it is amazing how much more they accept them.

Lorna

For Such A Time As This

What vision can drive us to mobilize, train and prepare a generation "for such a time as this"?

JESUS is the vision!

David said, "I will declare your Name to all generations and therefore the nations will praise you" Psalm 145:4  Declaring the Name of Jesus through the generations will result in the nations praising Him.

Biblically, children were included

When God ordered His people Israel, He placed the children in the family, in the tribe and in the nations.  Children were included in the vision, the plans and the strategy of the people of Israel and in the early church, they were there.  The words "everyone" "all the people" "Israelites" "Church of the Lord Jesus Christ" "the whole nation" include every generation, including the children.

"Church" means every generation

"Cell Church"  therefore means adults, young people and children in cells, otherwise it is "Cell Adults"

"For such a time as this"

"The men of Isaachar knew the signs of the times, and also what to do" 1 Chronicles 12 :32

Our world is changing rapidly.  We must prepare the next generation to be like David and "Serve the purpose of God in their generation" Acts 13: 36.  God has plans for their generation – we need to be relevant in training and preparing them to be leaders and voices in their generation.  We can no longer raise them in a “school environment” as a Greek education system, with classes, lessons, teachers and cognitive knowledge.  It is time to return to our Biblical roots and see how the Bible really tells us to train, disciple and bring forth a generation that could be the generation to shout:  "COME LORD JESUS!"

It is all about Jesus!

Children Are Also Ministers

robert

by Robert Lay, Cell Church Ministry Brazil

When we speak about children’s cells, there are many possibilities and ways to approach them. In our movement in Brazil, we emphasize intergenerational cells. All church members and visitors bring their children to the cells. We believe the cell is a family and children are an integral part of that family.

In biological families, children learn our Christian values and learn to be good citizens. In the spiritual family, the cell, they learn to live in Christian community, which include all the “one anothers” of Scripture. If a child grows up participating in a cell with all the spiritual uncles and aunts, there will be little or no training necessary for them to become good leaders. They have learned by experience how to build true New Testament Community through the mutual edification of one anothers.

The same Holy Spirit that lives in adults also lives in children. Their prayers are just as effective as adult prayers. Sometimes I think they are even more sincere. I have seen that children receive words from the Lord. The intergenerational cell works like dynamite, destroying the gates of hell.

In our ministry here in Brazil, we produce children’s materials for the entire cell church, which involves the Sunday school, the home, and the cell. Our web address is www.celulas.com.br if you would like more information. Hundreds of cell churches in Brazil are using our children’s materials.

Mistakes when working with children’s cells

mario

by Mario Vega, http://www.elim.org.sv/

I’ve noticed at least three mistakes when working with children:

Not taking the job seriously. Given the tender and sweet character of children, people adopt a loving and condescending attitude. This is fine as long as you don’t play down the importance of their spiritual needs. Children’s cells shouldn’t be turned into a game. Children have spiritual needs equivalent to those of adults. Their main need is to know Jesus. It is a real spiritual battle–the one that has to be fought for the salvation of children. It involves prayer, teaching of the word of God and dependence on the Holy Spirit.

Not taking the spiritual experiences of children seriously. The repentance, the new birth and experiences of encounter with God also occur in children. But because they are children, there is a risk to minimize those experiences or to not give them the importance they have. An adult might minimize a child’s tears of repentance, thinking the child doesn’t have much to repent from. On the contrary, the child’s experience should be respected and his faith in Jesus as a remedy for sin should be encouraged.

Not giving importance to their spiritual growth. When a child has been born again he should be nurtured and mentored. His desire to be baptized and partake of the Lord’s Supper should be taken seriously. All of their faith experiences are as real as that of adults. The fact that they are children does not mean that their prayers, songs and tears have no legitimacy. Maybe they cannot articulate their experiences theologically as an adult, but that does not diminish their authenticity. Remember that Jesus placed children as a model. Faith models are not found among adults but among children.

Errores trabajando con células infantiles

by Mario Vega
