The Gifts of the Spirit and Cell Ministry

mario

by Mario Vega

Paul instructs the church in Corinth that the gifts of speaking in tongues and prophesying must be done in an orderly manner: two or at the most three and each in turn (1 Cor 14:27-29). This order represents a challenge for a large church such as Elim, where thousands of people attend each of its services.

Those who can participate in the public exercise of such gifts turn out to be the exceptional two or three among several thousands. How then can the church members exercise the gifts God has given them? The answer is the cells. At Elim, we have thousands of cell groups. In those cell groups, the church members have the opportunity to exercise their God-given gifts. The average attendance in each adult cell is between nine and ten people. When Paul talks about two or three prophesying in turn, this becomes very practical in the cell group and his words find new meaning (and after all, Paul was talking to a house church when he wrote it!). Even though Paul was specifically referring to the supernatural gifts of tongues and prophesy, we can apply Paul’s counsel to the other gifts as well, knowing that the small group atmosphere is the best place for all of the gifts.

How are you doing in allowing your people to discover and operate their gifts in the cell context?

Releasing the Spirit’s Gifts and Power in Your Small Group

jim

by Jim Egli, www.smallgroupsbigimpact.wordpress.com

In 1 Corinthians 12:7-11 we get a glimpse into the home group meetings of the 1st century, when Paul says:

“Now to each one the manifestation of the Spirit is given for the common good.  To one there is given through the Spirit the message of wisdom, to another the message of knowledge by means of the same Spirit, to another faith by the same Spirit, to another gifts of healing by that one Spirit, to another miraculous powers, to another prophecy, to another distinguishing between spirits, to another speaking in different kinds of tongues, and to still another the interpretation of tongues. All these are the work of one and the same Spirit, and he gives them to each one, just as he determines.” (NIV)

This little video clip of body life shows each member using the Spirit’s gifts to minister to one another in power.

But exactly how does this work in the average small group like yours and mine? There are lots of different ways to do Spirit-led ministry in a small group, here’s one pattern that we teach leaders to use in the groups of our church.

The Five W’s

Like many churches we teach our leaders to follow a pattern of 5 W’s. Our groups typically use this order:

Welcome – Groups use an icebreaker or opening question to connect people to one another and get everyone engaged.

Witness – People pray for their friends that need God in pairs or triads. (We used to do this at the end of the meeting but found that it consistently got squeezed out when done then, because inevitably some other part of the meeting went long.)

Word – We look at God’s word together to let him shape our minds, hearts and actions.

Worship – Typically this involves singing a couple of God-centered songs to help us respond to God and listen to him.

Wind – Spirit-led ministry to one another.

It’s easy to get in a rut as a small group in terms of ministry if all you do is say something like, “What would you like prayer for today?” The main problem with this approach is that God may want to do something entirely different than what is on people’s mind.

To tune into what the Spirit is saying, we encourage leaders to invite the Holy Spirit to speak to people during the worship time and to release his supernatural gifts to each person. This is also the time for the leaders to tell group members to listen to the Spirit for any impressions—pictures, phrases or scriptures he might give—during worship.

The worship time is then followed by a time of silence and then people are asked to “give expression to their impressions.” After people have been ample given time to share impressions, we typically move into smaller groups—perhaps forming groups of four or five people or breaking into groups of men and women. In these smaller groups we ask what impressions spoke to people. That is where we begin our ministry. If there is time after that, we then take personal prayer requests.

For example, one evening in my small group, the person leading ministry time, after a time of silence, asked what impressions or sensations people had experienced. In response I shared that my hands were tingling. The ministry time leader then asked, “Does anyone have a problem with their hands that they would like prayer for?”

A young woman in the group who was a new believer said that she had a condition that caused the skin on her hands to peal off and that her doctor had told her that there was no cure and that she would have this condition for the rest of her life.

So we laid hands on her hands and prayed for her. After a brief time we asked her if she sensed anything. She said, “Yes, my hands are getting very warm.” We told her that this was a sign of God’s healing activity and we prayed some more. Again asked her what she was experiencing. and she said, “My hands are getting very hot.” She had a concerned look on her face, but we were getting more excited and prayed for her once more. Then she reported, “It feels like my hands are on fire!”, and she went to the bathroom and ran cold water over them perhaps to keep them from igniting!

Jesus totally healed her hands and they have given her no problems since that time several years ago!

In John 14:12-14, Jesus says: “I tell you the truth, anyone who has faith in me will do what I have been doing. He will do even greater things than these, because I am going to the Father. And I will do whatever you ask in my name, so that the Son may bring glory to the Father. You may ask me for anything in my name, and I will do it.”

Ask for awesome, God-sized things in your group. Invite God to do things so big that people will realize how amazing and big his love and power are.

I like to pray what the early church prayed in Acts 4:30: “Lord, stretch out your hand to heal and perform miraculous signs and wonders through the name of your holy servant Jesus.” God wants to do just that and is waiting for us to ask.

Cell Groups and the Priesthood of Believers

freddy

by Freddy Noble

When I came to reside in the city of New York, I was responding to God’s call to pastor the First Spanish Baptist Church of Manhattan. As I was starting to serve here, I encountered various challenges. When I looked at the 30 plus story buildings that stood in front of the temple, I wondered: “How do we penetrate those enormous towers?” Also considering the distance at which the members lived and the different work schedules that everyone had, I asked myself, “How do I serve my brothers and sisters in these different circumstances?”

God gave me the response to my concerns via the implementation of the cell groups. The members have been able to witness to their neighbors in the large buildings, as well as spiritually edify one another through cell group participation. This has been one of the greatest blessings we have received.

During the week, the participants are ministered in their homes or their neighborhood. New York is a large city, and our people live long distances from the temple, so it’s very difficult for them to “come to church” during the week. But if there is a cell group near their home, they can meet with other believers, pray, read the Scriptures and fellowship with one another.

In addition, through cell groups, the believers become aware of needs that could easily go unnoticed in other situations. They can minister to each other. For example, recently, one of our cell group hosts, needed to go to a medical appointment but did not have a ride. The cell group leader, learning of her situation, was able to take her, wait for her, then take her back home. This is just one example but there are many more. Often couples with marital problems are helped through the counsel of another couple who learned about the need in a cell group. New believers are guided through the help of seasoned believers.

Now the task of spiritual care of the church is not in the hands of one man, but a collaborative approach that facilitates the mission. After all, isn’t this the New Testament model?

The Bible states in Ephesians 4:15-16:” But, speaking the truth in love, may grow up in all things into Him who is the head-Christ- From whom the whole body, joined and knit together by what every joint supplies, according to the effective working by which every part does its share, causes growth of the body for the edifying of itself in love.” In cell group based churches, this is possible.

We Are the Body of Christ

bill

by Bill Mellinger, Crestline First Baptist Church

“If one part suffers, every part suffers with it; if one part is honored, every part rejoices with it. Now you are the body of Christ, and each one of you is a part of it.” (1 Corinthians 12:26-27 NIV)

I enjoy worship. In fact, one of the reasons I encouraged men to attend the Promise Keeper events was because of the incredible privilege of worshipping with several thousand men, singing, praying, humbling ourselves, shouting and repenting before God. That kind of worship is incredible, and it is a taste of the celebrations that we will enjoy in Heaven. However, in those gatherings where we worshipped with one voice, I did not know the hurts and joys of the men even within a few feet of me.

As I prepared for this blog, I reread I Corinthians 12 to remind myself of the gifts of the Spirit and the way that we are to use them in the Body of Christ. I would encourage you to do the same. Just look at the two verses quoted above. This is just a paragraph before Paul’s statement on love, “the most excellent way.”

Large worship gatherings are great for enthusiastic worship. They lack in the ability to suffer or rejoice with individual parts. Even small churches lack this kind of personal caring and intimacy. As I look at some of the small churches I have been part of, there was a false sense of intimacy. People thought they knew one another, but did they really? You might be surprised to realize that they will not know everyone’s name let alone the joys and challenges they are facing.

When I sit down in our Life Group each week, I can see things in the eyes of the people in my group. Members in the group can see when someone is exhausted from their week; in pain as their body attempts to heal from some injury, or when tears are about to burst because of some inner pain. As this occurs, the people in the group begin to reach out to one another. One prays for healing; another offers a word of encouragement from the Lord; someone else gives a silent hug; with an anointing of faith another speaks God’s truth or silently blesses a neighbor and together we are encouraged to share Christ with that person who seems impossible but we know matters to God.

I hear Joshua saying, “As for me and my household, we will serve the LORD” (Joshua 24:15). As for me and my household, my cell, my life group, my small group, and my church, we will use the gifts of the Spirit to serve the Lord, one another and our community. God has given every believer one or more spiritual gifts. Nearly all of them can be used in a cell. Just look at the list in I Corinthians 12: Wisdom, knowledge, faith, healing, miraculous powers, prophesy, distinguishing between spirits, tongues, and interpretation of tongues. Interpret them according to your tradition and there is no place where each person can use their gifts to serve one another like in the cell. Even misuses of the Spirit can be dealt with in love by the cell.

Look at I Corinthians 12-14, Romans 12, Ephesians 4 and I Peter 4 and examine where the gifts of the Spirit are being freely used in your ministry. God wants every believer to serve Him. The Holy Spirit wants to fill us to overflowing. I for one do not want to limit the ministry of the Body of Christ to what people can do in a worship celebration. When that happens, it is no wonder people fall into a kind of elite status of the people who are ministering “up front.”

God bless you as you equip others to serve,

All Are Ministers in Christ’s Body

robert

by Robert Lay, Cell Church Ministry Brazil

The cell is the Body of Christ. For the body to function perfectly, all its members need to function well. In the early church the gifts of the Holy spirit, practically speaking, were the only tools they had to fulfill the different tasks required by the body. All needs where met through all members using their particular gifts. The Christ present in the midst of them distributed the gifts, as needed, through the Holy Spirit. The Spirit worked as a post man, delivering the gift to any member who was ready to receive it and obey, in using it to solve any problem, or meet any need of any kind for any member of the body.

When the shift came, and the Body of Crist no longer existed as a basic unit meeting in houses, the gifts lost their proper place of use. For 1700 years we have been trying to use the gifts in the auditorium church. Normally gifts are used on the platform by some specially gifted and anointed holy man, to solve problems and needs of poor creatures in need of a special blessing. The basic unit of the Body of Crist, the cell, was ignored in this one-winged church. Sadly, some cell churches carry this idea of a “holy man or woman on a platform” into the cell group.

Thus, you have players and observers in the cell. The apostle Paul says that all have received the Spirit, and Christ, the Head of the Body, is the one who decides to whom he gives each gift to meet the specific needs of the Body. There is no “show time” in the cell where some people display their supernatural abilities. All in the cell have to learn to listen and hear from the Head.

May the Lord give us grace to understand this, and come back to the New Testament practices to edify (oikodomeo) the Body of Christ through His gifts. This has to be taught, learned and practiced anew in our cells. We must not fear mistakes along the road as we relearn to edify each other in the cell. Thanks God this is starting to happen in a healthy way.

Robert
