Multiplying Long-Term Cells

Angel Manuel Hernádez Gutiérrez

Dr. Ralph Neighbour has recently written a book entitled, Christ’s Basic Bodies. The title and contents of the book underline what the cell group really is: a basic part of the body of Christ. Churches only need two or three to meet in the name of Christ to be called churches (Matt.18:20). Cell groups should develop all the characteristics and spiritual functions of a church, principally the use of the gifts of the Holy Spirit to help the body of Christ to grow. When a cell group is not treated as a church, it’s growth is strangled. It’s also a lack of insight of the body of Christ to not see the cell as the church of Jesus Christ (1Cor. 10:16 ;11:29).

Dr. Manuel Diaz, a respected Spanish theologian a few years ago told me about the Apostle Paul’s impact on Tarragona, Spain .He told me that church in Spain practiced what they called a “mozarabe” service. The mozarabe service, was more like a cell or house group than a church celebration. And this form of service gradually disappeared in Spain, with the introduction of the Roman service, which is the one we’ve inherited in the Spanish protestant churches (and around the entire world). Perhaps this is the reason why some pastors resist the idea of house churches and only practice the larger celebration services. In reality, both are needed in the body of Christ.

The duration and health of the cell group depends on how we see it. If we consider it a “means to the end” (a way to grow our church), rather than the church itself, we will prioritize the cell less. In the cell church movement, we respect the cell (house church) at the same level as we do the celebration service (the coming together of those house churches). Sadly, those who are not cell churches see the cell group as just another program—just a means to an end. When a cell doesn’t grow in the cell church, the leadership tries to nurture and nourish the cell because it’s the basic body of Christ. But in a non-cell church, if the cell doesn’t grow, it’s closed down, just like a program.

Because the cell is the church, we must give it the same consideration that we give the celebration.

Saludos, Angel.

Multiplication is a Biblical Principle

daphne

by Daphne Kirk

Multiplication is a Biblical principle. From the very beginning God commanded us to be fruitful “and multiply” Genesis 1: 28 Marriage is for multiplication “And why did he make them one? He was seeking godly offspring” Malachi. 2: 15 The work of Jesus on this earth multiplied to His disciples and then to the rest of the world. It is fruitfulness, success and obedience. In preparing people for multiplication the sound Biblical basis, empowered by the Holy Spirit, dispels the thought of it being a “bright idea” a “cell church concept” or even a threat to relationships.

On a practical level some of the following can help the culture of the church change to embrace and even move expectantly towards multiplication:

  • Sowing the vision for multiplication at the birth of the cell
  • Using testimonies, in the Celebration, of Cells that have multiplied
  • Celebrating a multiplication both at Cell and Celebration
  • Prayer, prayer and more prayer
  • Coaches focusing on raising up interns and relating to them, not just the cell leader
  • Creating a culture of expectation among the leaders that can spread to the rest of the church

Healthy multiplication breeds healthy multiplication. Multiplication on an individual basis through evangelism and discipleship, multiplication on a family level through children discipled by their parents, multiplication on a cell level as leaders are raised up and members look forward to the day of celebration. Jesus came with the command to “GO and make disciples…” A cell that “Goes – multiplies and Grows!”

Multiplying Long Term Cells

robert

by Robert Lay, Cell Church Ministry Brazil

The other side of ongoing healthy cell multiplication is stagnation. When stagnation occurs, there is something wrong with the communication of the Head (Christ) and His body (the cell). The cell is the Body of Christ. The Head never has a problem. He is always ready to speak and give his orders. The problem, then, is the inability of the body to hear, understand and obey the Head. All members in a healthy body (cell) function normally. They all fulfill their tasks and are in perfect harmony with the Head. The will of the Head is always the salvation of mankind. That means growth and multiplication as a normal process.

In the human body, sometimes there is an interruption of communication between the head and some body members. Part of the body gets paralyzed. The paralyzed parts of the body, then, become a burden to the healthy parts who have to take over their functions. Many times this causes an overload to the healthy body parts.
The same can happen in the body of Christ. If we have sick or dysfunctional members in our cells, there will not be a healthy and ongoing multiplication. It is of greatest importance, therefore, to maintain healthy and productive cells.

What, then, are some vital signs of a healthy body or cell?

  • True community life and a healthy relationship to the head.
  • Discipleship and proper training of every member.
  • Accountability or mutual responsibility of all members one to another.
  • An ongoing development of leadership.
  • Evangelism as a life style, through relationships with the unsaved oikos of all cell members.
  • Recognizing the continuous Presence, Power and Purpose of Christ in the cell, Christ in the midst.
  • Death of all members of the cell to their own agendas and preferences. As Paul said in Galatians 2:20, “I have been crucified with Christ and I no longer live, but Christ lives in me. The life I live in the body, I live by faith in the Son of God, who loved me and gave himself for me.”

It is the duty of the coach to help the cell leader to maintain his own health as well as the cell’s health. A good and efficient coach will help the cell leader to constantly check the vital signs of the body and make corrections when necessary. May Christ help us to take good care of his body, so it can reproduce itself in ongoing cycles of natural multiplication.

Working Together for Cell Multiplication

mario

by Mario Vega

Each specific member sees the cell in a unique way. For example, the member sees the cell as the perfect place for his friends to hear the gospel and then to follow Jesus. The cell leader, on the other hand, sees the cell as a great place to develop new leaders. The cell member wants to evangelize, while the leader focuses on the discipleship of a new leader. Thus, the functions of each person in the cell complements the other and leads to multiplication.

While members focus on the numerical growth of the cell, the leader develops a new leader for the time when the cell multiplies. Both are necessary to actually ensure that multiplication takes place. Members are engaged in the growth of the cellthrough evangelism and discipleship while the leader generates the new leader who will be in charge of the new cell.

The two points of view are necessary and complementary. As in a biological cell, the sum of each member’s function produces the health of the cell. And we do know that healthy cells are the ones which multiply. Similarly, the multiplication of cell groups will come as each member exercises his or her function that will in turn build the health of the cell as it moves toward multiplication.

Building the Team

By Michael C. Mack

[I, Joel Comiskey, want to introduce Michael Mack, one of the gurus of small groups in North American. Michael Mack is an active small group pastor, founder of www.smallgroups.com, and author of many books on small group ministry, including Small Group Vital Signs].

Healthy cell multiplication begins with—you guessed it—a healthy cell! Years ago I used to do lots of vision casting, goal setting, and arm twisting to get our groups to multiply. I’d share Scriptures with leaders that clearly articulated the need to reproduce. I prodded, rewarded, celebrated, shamed, urged, and manipulated … but none of these tactics ever produced great results. Then I started focusing on the health of our groups. We developed what we called the seven vital signs of a healthy group, which later became the seven chapters of my book Small Group Vital Signs, published by TOUCH (www.touchusa.org).

I stopped talking about multiplication because our healthy groups naturally multiplied, and they multiplied in healthy ways. (Do you really want an unhealthy group to reproduce itself?) It’s natural for healthy cells to reproduce themselves.

When we assessed all our groups, we came to this surprising revelation: Sharing Leadership with a Core Team was by far the biggest catalyst for groups to grow and multiply.

Before he selected the 12 apostles, Jesus called two sets of brothers. Three of those four, Peter, James, and John, became Jesus’ core team. Jesus poured his life into these three men, investing into them and modeling a life surrendered to the Father. While Jesus did not ignore the other nine apostles, he concentrated his time on these three.

Jesus knew something vital that we may overlook: No one can effectively lead, disciple, or shepherd more than about three people. Even Jesus didn’t attempt it. Healthy leaders who lead healthy, growing cells also share leadership with two to three others.

How do you go about building your team? I share seven steps to sharing leadership in my blog post here. The seven steps are basic:

1. Share the leadership load with 2-3 others.

2. Don’t go back to how you used to lead.

3. Create a clear plan for action.

4. Share the leadership roles of shepherding and discipling people.

5. Actively develop core team members.

6. Attend training sessions together.

7. Extend the Kingdom.

In my opinion, the title of my book, The Pocket Guide to Burnout-Free Small Group Leadership (TOUCH) tells only half the story. It’s certainly true that by sharing leadership you will avoid leadership burnout. Even more importantly, when you build a team you will be much more effective and productive. It takes a team to reproduce!

Mike
