The pastor is not a psychologist. Yet, he gives advice about human behavior. The pastor is not a professional counselor, but he contributes to the field of counseling. The pastor is not an expert in education, but young people flock to him for help in their studies. Nor is the pastor a psychiatrist, but sometimes he must confront serious mental problems.

The pastoral care of souls and minds is a religious function dating back thousands of years ago, and is recognized by leading representatives of psychology and psychiatry. Even though this is true, it’s important that the pastor has an adequate clinical pastoral training and recognizes when a problem requires the intervention of a trained professional.

The pastor who is adequately trained in clinical care should be willing to work together with the psychologist or psychiatrist, if necessary. Unfortunately, some pastors assume an arbitrary, high-minded attitude that may endanger the mental health of believers in need of professional assistance.

It’s simply impossible that a pastor has all the answers to every problem presented during the course of pastoral ministry. Happy is the pastor who recognizes his or her limitations and who is not ashamed to admit them. After all, the dilemmas facing people today are wide and varied. The pastor who accepts limitations without being defeated by them is a mature person who is free from the formidable task of trying to be what he or she is not.

Although a pastor is not expected to have all the answers to human problems, the pastor is expected to know how to help parishioners find solutions to their problems. This means that a pastor should sometimes recommend that a person contact a professional and then provide information about where to find help, and sometimes even the means to receive it.

Referrals to other professional persons or agencies must be made under the following circumstances:

1. The problem is beyond the scope of the pastor’s ability to help.

2. There are competent people in the community that are able to help.

3. The pastor knows that the person’s faith will not be undermined by recommending a particular professional.

4. The pastor can still be supportive of the person and maintain pastoral care.

To make these things happen, the pastor needs to know the skilled professionals in the community. It’s essential that that the pastor has confidence in the professional’s competence and integrity.

Accepting the need for professional help is part of recognizing the limitations of pastoral work. It will also help the pastor to be far more effective in pastoral work and ultimately people will receive the help they truly need.

El pastor no es un psicólogo, no obstante, se le busca para dar consejo como si lo fuera. No es un consejero por vocación, pero se supone que ayude en este campo. No es un consejero en asuntos educativos, pero con frecuencia los jóvenes vienen a él con problemas de sus estudios. Tampoco es un psiquiatra; pero algunas veces confronta personas con serios problemas mentales.

El cuidado de las almas y de las mentes es una función religiosa que tiene varios milenios, as es reconocido por destacados representantes de la psicologa y de la psiquiatra. Aún asi es importante que el pastor tenga un adecuado entrenamiento clnico-pastoral y reconocer cuándo un problema necesita la intervención de un profesional capacitado por ello.

El pastor adecuadamente entrenado en clnica pastoral, debe estar dispuesto a trabajar en equipo con el psicólogo o psiquiatra, siempre que sea necesario. Lamentablemente algunos pastores asumen una actitud omnipotente y arbitraria que puede poner en peligro la salud mental de los creyentes necesitados de asistencia profesional.

No es posible que el pastor tenga respuestas para todos los problemas que se le presentan durante el curso de su ministerio pastoral. Feliz es el pastor que reconoce y que no se avergüenza por su falta de entendimiento, porque los muchos dilemas que su gente confronta son muy amplios y variados. El pastor que acepta sus limitaciones sin sentirse derrotado por ellos es una persona madura que está libre de la formidable labor de procurar ser lo que no es.

Aunque no se espera que el pastor tenga todas las respuestas a los problemas humanos, se espera que sepa cómo ayudar a sus feligreses a encontrar la solución de sus problemas. A veces hará esto al recomendarles que acudan a un profesional; sobre todo, cuando reconoce que el problema que atraviesa la persona va más allá de la esfera espiritual, o cuando la sobrecarga emocional afecta su vida espiritual. Este es el proceso de proveer a los feligreses información acerca de dónde encontrar ayuda y poner los medios para que la reciban.

Las recomendaciones a otras personas profesionales o agencias deben hacerse bajo las siguientes circunstancias:

1. Cuando es bien claro y evidente que el problema del feligrés está más allá del alcance de la capacidad del pastor para ayudar.

2. Cuando hay personas competentes en la comunidad o en el área que están capacitadas para ayudar.

3. Cuando el pastor pueda hacer tal recomendación con la conciencia clara de que la fe de su feligrés no será destruida o sus futuras relaciones sociales puestas en entredicho.

4. Cuando él puede desligarse del problema pero seguir sosteniendo al feligrés en una relación de apoyo.

Para esto es importante que el pastor conozca a la persona profesional capacitada para ayudar al feligrés con su problema. Tenga confianza en la competencia e integridad de la fuente recomendada y apoye al profesional en el proceso hacia la solución del problema a menos de que haya una evidencia clara de que no lo beneficia.

Aceptar que en ocasiones se requiere la ayuda profesional es parte de reconocer las limitaciones del trabajo pastoral, y trabajar en coordinación con otros profesionales de la salud permitirá ofrecerles a los feligreses una orientación y ayuda eficaz.

Daphne: What do you see as the differing roles of pastoral counseling and professional counseling?

Michele: The big issue is knowing limitations. In many states to counsel outside of an area of expertise is illegal and becomes a liability issue. It is critically important that pastoral and lay counselors know their limitations. Usually, pastoral counselors can work with issues such as marriage and family, parenting, grief , basic life issues, and of course, spiritual issues. Professionals work with those issues that are diagnosable, such as clinical depression, anxiety disorders, bi-polar, addictions, eating disorder, domestic violence, post-traumatic stress, and numerous others. Usually, pastors need to work with issues that can be resolved within 3 to 5 times of meeting. Professional counselors are specialists. Just like pastors do not serve as medical doctors treating issues such as cancer, they also cannot treat emotional cancers. They can provide spiritual encouragement and prayer for both, but pastors need to be very careful about offering advice to issues that they are not experts about, such as intensive trauma recovery. Often times, our clients have been hurt by well meaning Christian leaders when these boundaries aren’t respected.

Daphne: What advice would you give to cell leaders, coaches and pastors who meet people with problems on a daily basis?

I think pastors ought to go to every training possible because knowing how to minister to hurting people is critical in our society today. This is also a way to reach lost people. I think that these leaders should also receive training and be very careful to follow appropriate boundaries not going beyond their level of expertise. Christian professionals spend years of time learning, practicing and being supervised to do the specialized care that they do. It is really important for Christian leaders to have resources available to give to people who are in crisis and need help beyond what they can provide.

Daphne: Is there anything else you would like to add?

Michele: The numbers of hurting people in our society only increase as time progresses. People are more isolated than ever before. The numbers of our children who are being abused continue to rise. Now, 1 in 3 girls and 1 in 5 boys will be sexually abused by the time they are 18. Cell churches are perfect for helping hurting people heal and recover from life’s hurts, but they also need other resources. We have found in our traumatized community that it has taken many different ministries and ministers working together to help our community recover. We are all on the same team, and each team player is critically important in helping people become who Christ wants them to be. As we help hurting people, we need to seek out as much training as possible to make sure that we do no further harm to those who we minister to and we need to know our own limitations, whether lay, pastoral or professional.

Parte 2: Ministerio de consejera en la iglesia Celebración

Daphne: ¿Qué cree usted que son los diferentes roles de consejera pastoral y la consejera profesional?

Michele: La gran problema es saber las limitaciones. En muchos estados dar consejera fuera del área de especialización es ilegal y se convierte en una cuestión de responsabilidad.

Es muy importante que los pastorales y los consejeros conozcan sus limitaciones. Por lo general, los consejeros pastorales pueden trabajar con temas como el matrimonio y la familia, la paternidad, el dolor, las cuestiones básicas de la vida, y por supuesto, problemas espirituales. Los profesionales trabajan con estos temas que son diagnosticables, tales como la depresión clnica, los trastornos de ansiedad, bi-polar, adicciones, desorden de alimentación, violencia doméstica, estrés post-traumático, y muchos otros. Por lo general, los pastores necesitan trabajar en asuntos que pueden resolverse dentro de 3 a

5 reuniones. Los consejeros profesionales son especialistas. Al igual que los pastores no sirven como los médicos el tratamiento de temas tales como el cáncer, tampoco pueden tratar cánceres emocionales. Ellos pueden proporcionar estmulo espiritual y oración para ambos, pero los pastores tienen que ser muy cuidadosos al ofrecer asesoramiento en cuestiones que no son expertos, por ejemplo la recuperación del trauma intenso. Muchas veces, nuestros clientes se han visto afectados por lderes cristianos con buenas intensiones cuando estos lmites no son respetados.

Daphne: ¿Qué consejo le dara a los lderes celulares, entrenadores y pastores que se encuentran personas con problemas en una base diaria?

Michele: Creo que los pastores deben ir a cada entrenamiento, porque el saber cómo atender a personas heridas es fundamental en nuestra sociedad hoy en da. Esta es también una manera de alcanzar a los perdidos. Creo que estos lderes también deben recibir capacitación y tener mucho cuidado de seguir los lmites apropiados, y no ir más allá de su nivel de experiencia. Profesionales cristianos pasan años en aprender, practicar y ser supervisados para ver la atención especializada en lo que hacen.

Es muy importante para los lderes cristianos tener recursos disponibles para dar a las personas que están en crisis y necesitan ayuda más allá de lo que se pueda proporcionar.

Daphne: ¿Hay algo más que quieras agregar?

Michele: La cantidad de gente dañada en nuestra sociedad aumentará a medida que pasa el tiempo. La gente está más aislada que nunca. El número de nuestros niños que son abusados siguen aumentando. Testimony of Counseling in the Cell Church

During this month, we’ve examined the counseling in the cell church. We’ve looked at the power of group counseling, the supervisor’s role in counseling, and the gift of counseling. But what about professional counseling? Are there any cell churches who have successfully integrated professional counseling into their ministry? One great example is the Celebration Church (pastor Dennis Watson). This church is located in the New Orleans area and after hurricane Katrina pastor Dennis wisely gathered together a group of professional counselors to help those devasted by the disaster. Daphne Kirk knows a lot about this ministry since the Celebration Church is a key supporter of her ministry. Daphne agreed to interview the director of counseling at Celebration Church. This will be a two- part blog. Daphne writes:

Having read with interest the blogs on counseling I interviewed Michele Louviere M.Div., LMFT, Director of Counseling at Celebration Hope Center which is the counseling agency under the umbrella of Celebration (cell) Church’s non-profit, Healing Hearts for Community Development.  She gives timely warnings about and encouragements for the roles that  pastoral and professional counseling can play in bringing healing and wholeness. It is my opinion that this should be read with diligence so that legal, professional and healthy life-giving boundaries can be upheld to bring healing to hurting people both in the church and those outside it.

Part 1: Counseling Ministry at Celebration Church

Daphne: Could you tell us about Celebration Hope Center and your experience there?

Michele: Celebration Hope Center first opened two months before Hurricane Katrina as an outpatient, faith-based, professional addiction recovery center. Katrina literally washed CHC away, because it was located in the Celebration Church campus and had 10 feet of toxic flood waters. After the storm, CHC eventually re-opened but added mental health services, specifically intensive trauma recovery. Trauma experts had successfully predicted that people could not hold the current traumas of Katrina and the secret childhood traumas from the past. CHC received training from professional Christian therapists from across the country and began working with hundreds of childhood trauma survivors. They also added prevention services targeted for local schools and many evidence-based programs. In a fairly short time, God has grown CHC to be an amazing place of healing for thousands of people through addiction, mental health and prevention services. Without advertising, CHC has clients coming from over 10 parishes and cannot keep up with the numbers seeking help. CHC is also a training facility for local masters’ students, including New Orleans Baptist Theological Seminary. Since Katrina, we have had the awesome opportunity of training over 70 professional, Christian therapists, who many are now working all over the country. I have the privilege of being the Clinical Director and being here since Katrina. I have a front row seat watching God work to bring people into a relationship with Him and then recover from the issues that hinder them from healthy abundant living. I also do intensive trauma recovery work with people who have been devastated in unthinkable ways as children. Watching God heal from lifetimes of pain and problems is a great honor.

Daphne: How does Celebration Church (a cell church) and CHC work together?

Michele: Celebration Church and CHC work closely together. Although we see clients from many churches and the non-churched, a large percentage of our clients do go to Celebration. Celebration has a large recovery ministry, Celebrate Recovery, that we also work closely together. We, as Christian therapists, see our role as being part of the intensive discipleship of the church. Often times, when people come to Christ, they have issues that hinder their growth into the leaders that God has designed them to be. Celebration Church has our services listed on their bulletin. Their cell groups know about our services. Pastors refer clients to CHC. When issues go beyond pastor’s qualifications, then we are able to step in and take those clients. Pastors have more time to do other ministry tasks because we work with the intensive crisis issues. Dennis Watson, Lead Pastor, and other staff persons are on our Board of Directors. The staff and church helps with fund raising for our non-profit.

We teach classes and run groups for the congregation, such as a premarital group, parenting and marriage groups. We provide training for their cell groups and ministries, such as Darkness to Light, which is a sexual abuse prevention program. We encourage and even require small group attendance for many of our clients. Becoming part of a small group is a healthy, safe place for people to heal and learn adaptive coping strategies. We provide training for Celebration pastors to help them know how to minister safely and effectively to those in their congregation that are trauma survivors. When needed, release of information forms are signed by clients so that therapists and pastors can work together. We need and support one another.

Testimonio de Consejera en la Iglesia Celular

Durante este mes, hemos examinado la consejera en la iglesia celular. Hemos visto el poder de la terapia de grupo, el papel del supervisor en el asesoramiento, y el don de consejera. Pero ¿qué sucede con el asesoramiento profesional? ¿Hay iglesias celulares que han integrado con éxito el asesoramiento profesional en su ministerio? Un gran ejemplo es la Iglesia Celebración (Pastor Dennis Watson). Esta iglesia se encuentra en el área de Nueva Orleáns después del huracán Katrina el pastor Dennis sabiamente reunió a un grupo de consejeros profesionales para ayudar a las almas devastada por el desastre. Daphne Kirk sabe mucho acerca de este ministerio ya que la Iglesia Celebración es un partidario clave de su ministerio. Parte 1: El ministerio de consejera en la iglesia celebración

Daphne: ¿Podra contarnos sobre el Centro de Celebración Esperanza y su experiencia all?

Michele: Centro de Celebración Esperanza abrió por primera vez dos meses antes del huracán Katrina en forma ambulatoria, basada en la fe, en adición centro profesional de recuperación. El huracán Katrina, literalmente, se llevo todas las instalaciones de CHC, ya que se encontraba en el campus de la Iglesia Celebración la cual tenia mas de 10 pies de aguas tóxicas. Después de la tormenta, CHC finalmente volvió a abrir, pero añadió servicios de salud mental, especficamente la recuperación intensiva de trauma. Expertos en trauma haban predicho acertadamente que la gente no poda contener los traumas actuales de Katrina y los traumas secretos de la infancia en el pasado. CHC recibieron capacitación de profesionales terapeutas cristianos de todo el pas y comenzó a trabajar con cientos de sobrevivientes de traumas en su infancia. También agregaron los servicios de prevención dirigidos a las escuelas locales y muchos programas basados en la evidencia. En un tiempo bastante corto, Dios ha crecido CHC a ser un lugar increble en la sanacion de miles de personas a través de la adicción a la salud, mental y servicios de prevención. The key in Christian counseling lies in the resources God has given to his church. Those great resources are the Word of God and the Holy Spirit.

The problems people face are related to human behavior. Nothing but the Word of God can fully expose, reprove, explain, correct, and encourage human behavior. Human situations are repetitive and there are no problems that can be classified as unique. All conditions have been experienced previously by other people, and the Bible has the answer for each one of those situations.

Sometimes it is not easy to identify the root of the difficulties. Man’s heart is deceitful and often constructs facades and tools to avoid responsibility. That’s where the participation of the Holy Spirit is important to elucidate the truth and expose darkness. Perhaps a person will respond with an evasive, deceitful answer, but the Holy Spirit can guide the Christian discern what is really happening.

The Holy Spirit acts freely, apart from space and time. For this reason, Christian counseling cannot be restricted to the cell meeting. The Holy Spirit doesn’t have boundaries and can act wherever and whenever he chooses. The Christian must remain sensitive to those God-directed counseling moments, resting in the fact that he possesses all the necessary resources for effective counseling in the Word of God and Spirit of God. .

Recursos para la consejera.

La clave de la consejera cristiana se encuentra en los recursos que Dios ha entregado a su iglesia. Esos grandes recursos son la Palabra y el Espritu Santo.

Los problemas que las personas enfrentan tienen que ver con la conducta humana. Nada más que la Palabra de Dios puede dar explicación de las conductas aprobándolas, reprobándolas, corrigiéndolas o animándolas. Las situaciones humanas son repetitivas y no hay problemas que puedan catalogarse como únicos. Todas las condiciones han sido experimentadas previamente por otras personas y la Biblia tiene la respuesta para cada una de esas situaciones.

Algunas veces no es fácil identificar la raz de las dificultades. El corazón del hombre es engañoso y utiliza recursos de negación para evadir la responsabilidad. All es donde la participación del Espritu Santo es importante para poder dilucidar la verdad de algunas situaciones. Posiblemente las personas afirmen algo como evasiva pero el Espritu Santo puede guiar al cristiano sobre la realidad de lo que ocurre.

El Espritu Santo actúa con toda libertad y puede hacerlo en cualquier lugar y hora. Por esa razón no se pude limitar el trabajo de la consejera cristiana a la reunión de célula. El Espritu Santo no tiene fronteras y puede actuar en el lugar y el tiempo que mejor conviene.

El cristiano debe permanecer sensible a esos momentos de Dios y descansar en que posee los recursos que se necesitan para una consejera eficaz: la Palabra y el Espritu Santo.

We are challenged by Scripture in Col 4:5 “Be wise in the way you act toward outsiders; make the most of every opportunity.” This verse refers to the way we live before and interact with non-believers and it encourages us to be wise in these interactions. We can have more influence on people than we tend to imagine.

I want to encourage you to “make the most of every opportunity” as it relates to the edification opportunities found in your cell structure as well. 1 Thess 5:11 “Therefore encourage one another and build each other up, just as in fact you are doing.”

Being part of a functioning cell church gives the average person many opportunities to be built up and encouraged. As people are built up and encouraged they will grow and most of their spiritual needs will be met. This will alleviate the need for formal counseling for most people, for the most part.

Here are some opportunities for edification in the typical cell church structure:

#1 As you gather weekly for worship. Arrive 15 minutes early and stay 15 minutes after with the sole purpose of greeting and encouraging people.

#2 During your cell gathering time. At every point in your evening as you see opportunities to minister to needs, take the time to minister to people on the spot. We always break up into men and women for that portion of our evening so we can minister to each other at a deeper level. But all throughout the evening we stay sensitive to the Holy Spirit as it relates to needs that are being expressed by people.

#3 All throughout the week. Remember in a cell church it is not just about the two formal gatherings of cell and celebration but it is doing life together. The more we edify and care for one another outside the meetings, the more people will be helped and healed at their deepest needs.

#4 One-on-one mentoring/accountability. The greatest change I’ve seen in people and their growth has been through mentoring relationships. There is something about spending time face to face weekly with a person that benefits both parties. This is a great opportunity to speak into each other’s lives and sharpen each other, spiritually speaking. Most people need a listening ear and someone to help process things with.

#5 Encounter God Weekends. So much healing comes from weekend retreats that seek to help the individuals find freedom from bondage and past hurts. I have seen so much healing come from an Encounter God Weekend. As people step into freedom they become so much more productive in the kingdom.

Make the most of every opportunity to edify people and to be edified yourself through the cell church structure. It will give opportunities for all to be made whole and prepared to make a difference themselves in someone else’s life.

Somos desafiados por la Escritura en Col 4:5 “Andad sabiamente para con los de afuera, redimiendo el tiempo.” Este versculo se refiere a la forma en que vivimos antes e interactuamos con los no creyentes, y nos anima a ser prudentes en estas interacciones. Podemos tener más influencia en la gente de la que tendemos a imaginar.

Quiero animarte a “aprovechar al máximo cada oportunidad”, lo que se refiere a las oportunidades de edificación que también se encuentran en la estructura celular. 1 Tesalonicenses 5:11 “Por lo cual, animaos unos a otros, y edificaos unos a otros, as como lo hacéis.”

Ser parte de una iglesia celular en funcionamiento da a las personas promedio muchas oportunidades de ser construidos y animado. Como la gente son construidos y alentados, ellos crecen y la mayor parte de sus necesidades espirituales son  satisfechas. Esto aliviará la necesidad de ayuda de consejera para la mayora de las personas, en su mayor parte.

Estas son algunas de las oportunidades para la tpica edificación de la estructura celular:

# 1. A medida que se reúnen semanalmente para el culto. Llegue 15 minutos antes y permanezca15 minutos después, con el único propósito de saludar y alentar a la gente.

# 2. Durante su tiempo de reunión de la célula. En cualquier punto de la noche a medida que ven oportunidades para ministrar a las necesidades, tome tiempo para ministrar a la gente en el lugar. Siempre separamos los hombres y mujeres por parte de la noche, as podemos ministrar el uno al otro en un nivel más profundo. Pero lo largo de la noche nos quedamos sensibles al Espritu Santo en lo que respecta a las necesidades que se expresan por la gente.

# 3. A lo largo de la semana. Recuerde que en una iglesia celular no es sólo acerca de las dos reuniones formales de la célula y la celebración, es para convivir juntos. Cuanto más edificamos y cuidamos los unos a otros fuera de las reuniones, más gente va a ser ayudada y sanada en sus necesidades más profundas.

# 4. Tutora de uno a uno/responsabilidades. El mayor cambio que he visto en las personas y su crecimiento ha sido a través de las relaciones de tutora. Hay algo en el pasar tiempo cara a cara semanalmente con una persona que beneficia ambas partes. Esta es una gran oportunidad para hablar en la vida del otro y afinarse entre s, hablando espiritualmente. La mayora de la gente necesita un odo que escuche y alguien para ayudar a procesar las cosas con el.

# 5. Encuentros con Dios en los fines de semana. Hay mucha sanidad en los retiros del fin de semana ya que buscan ayudar a las personas a encontrar la libertad de la esclavitud y las heridas del pasado. He visto mucha sanidad por medio de un encuentro con Dios en un fin de semana. Cuando la gente encuentra la libertad llegan a ser mucho más productivos en el reino.

Aproveche al máximo todas las oportunidades para edificar la gente y ser edificado usted mismo a través de la estructura de la iglesia celular. Dará oportunidades para todos los que hacen y prepárate para hacer una diferencia en s en la vida de alguien.
