Persistent Evaluations

At Elim, we review cell ministry each week at every level. It all starts in the cell core when it gathers for its weekly planning meeting. The planning meeting is distinct from the actual cell meeting (all of our cells meet on Saturday). In the planning meeting (normally Tuesday or Wednesday), the core team reviews what happened in the Saturday night cell, who was or was not present, prayer needs, etc. The planning team evaluates the effectiveness in bringing guests, the way in which the assigned roles were performed, the quality of the songs, and even the refreshment time. Everything is covered in prayer and then plans are made for the next cell meeting.

Something very similar happens in the supervisory meetings, which takes place each week. During the supervisory meeting, the zone pastor first gathers with his supervisors and then the supervisors gather with their leaders. The work from the previous week is evaluated, recommendations are given, doubts are discussed, and the people are encouraged to press ahead. Prayer also plays an important role in these meetings.

Yet, evaluation continues at the district level where the district pastors meet with the zone pastors. Again, an evaluation of the previous week is produced. The evaluation is made in relation to the goals established for the quarter. Those results often stir the district pastors to make new projections, enroll new people in the leadership training, and increased the prayer for more conversions. In other words, the evaluations stir new activities and solidify the fruit.

Finally, the evaluation and improvement process ends when the district pastors consolidate their respective data and a weekly report is prepared with information of the whole church. This work is done consistently every week, with no exceptions. Persistence is one of the keys to improving the results.

Team Encouragement

by Angel Manuel Hernádez Gutiérrez

Discouragement is one of the biggest problems that leaders confront. Dr. John Stott in his book “The challenges of Christian leadership,” shows us that the two biggest challenges of leadership are discouragement and physical weakness. Dr. Joel Comiskey, in his book, “How to be a Great Cell Group Coach,” dedicates chapter 3 to teach coaches how encourage their leaders.

I believe God wants us to raise up teams of leaders who know how to encourage others. When leaders minister out of discouragement, at least five negative things happen: mistaken prayers (Numbers 11 : 14-15, 1 kings 19:4), mistaken words (Numbers 21: 4-5), mistaken thoughts (Matthew 11:2-3), mistaken vision (Numbers 13:25-33), mistaken actions (Numbers 20:7-11), and they end up in the wrong, mistaken places (Jonah in a fish, Abraham in Egypt, Peter in front of the fire of Christ’ s enemies).

Encouragement must begin in the leadership meetings. That’s why the Apostle Paul traveled to the churches he started to encourage them (Acts 14:22). Paul did this many time as we see in Acts 15:36, “Let us go back and visit the brothers in all the towns where we preached the word of the Lord and see how they are doing”.

In the Old Testament there is a Hebrew word “Kahah,” that means “loose encouragement.” In Isaiah 61:3 the phrase “spirit of affliction” is used for Kahah. This word is very much related to darkness. And we all know we must fight against darkness to win souls because the god of this world has blinded the minds of unbelievers , so that they cannot see the light of the Gospel shine upon them.(2 Corinthians 4:4). When we fight the evil one, it’s easy to get discouraged and to wear down. This is another reason why we need constant encouragement.

What does encouragement mean? In Philippians 2:19, the word encouragement appears as the Greek word ‘eupsujeo’ which means to be in good spirits, or to have a good attitude . And this is the principal purpose of encouragement: to instill or recover a good attitude.

A good attitude results in a willing leadership spirit. Peter had this in mind when he said, “Be shepherds of God’s flock that is under your care, serving as overseers-not because you must, but because you are willing, as God wants you to be; not greedy for money, but eager to serve” (1 Peter 5:2). The word “encourage” in Spanish means to give life, expression, communicate cheer and enthusiasm, movement , warmth, vigor ,etc. The Holy Spirit must produce this encouragement so it’s the leader’s job to reunite the team with the encouragement of the Holy Spirit, allowing encouragement to overflow to the team.

Donkeys for Jesus

Where is your “carrot”?  Remember the donkey pulling the wagon, while the driver holds a carrot out on a stick just in front of him so the donkey is constantly moving forward to reach it?  That’s US!!  Our leadership teams have a common goal, or set of goals, that become the targets at which we aim, the carrot we constantly pursue.  While goals change to reflect the present situations we are in, we must always have them.

In order to become effective in cell ministry we develop targets at which to aim, such as, how many potential leaders are in the training track, when will they be ready to launch new cells, how many are in the cell groups each week, and what needs to occur for inspiring new growth and evangelism, and more.  Discovering these targets (goals) as a group/team brings a realistic appraisal of where we are, where we want to be, and what it will take to arrive there.  Regular weekly (or at least bi-weekly) meetings of the team are essential for remaining focused, reviewing the targets, and evaluating whether we have moved closer to them.  If the actions we are taking do not move us toward the set targets, we must adjust our activities, prayer and discipline to meet the actual needs.

Sharing the work and the responsibility of a cell church can be a lot of fun.  Getting together to review the individual cells, zones and districts often brings great joy to the team!  Hearing of salvations, baptisms, healings and the restoring of lives stemming from community can be exhilarating.  Of course when the news is not as cheerful and we certainly need each other at those times also.  The point is; meet regularly, don’t postpone this very necessary component of cell ministry.

Bring your carrot to the meeting!

Mending the Nets as a Team

joel

by Joel Comiskey

As a teenager, I would go to Enseñada, Mexico once or twice a year with my family. We would camp right on Estero Beach and sleep in my parent’s tent trailer. My brother Jay and I would walk down the beach to a rock jetty and fish most of the day. I loved the solace of sitting on the rocks, throwing out my line, and bringing in my catch. I remember catching two fish at a time becuase I put two hooks on the line. Great memories.

Mark’s gospel talks about fishing as well. Mark says, “As Jesus was walking beside the Sea of Galilee, he saw two brothers, Simon called Peter and his brother Andrew. They were casting a net into the lake, for they were fishermen. “Come, follow me,” Jesus said, “and I will make you fishers of men.” At once they left their nets and followed him. (Mark 4:18-20)

Jesus called fisherman to be his disciples and told them he would make them fishers of men. The disciples were fishermen by trade. Fishing was their job. I played around with fishing in my youth, but these men fished as a profession–to put food on the table. I fished individually with a pole to catch one or two fish at a time. The disciples of Jesus fished with a net.

The fishing net was the tool of the disciple’s trade. A net full of holes could cost them dearly. I’m sure the disciples took great care and precautions to mend their nets when holes appeared. Did they mend the nets together? Most likely. They fished together and probably mended their nets together.

I’ll never forget one message that pastor Werner Kniessel gave at a cell church conference in his church in Zurich, Switerzland in 2002. He said that every year, his pastoral team came together to mend the cell nets. The pastoral team would examine which cells were unhealthy, which cells were not being supervized, which cells needed to multiply, etc. After mending the nets, they would project new goals for the year. They found that “mending the nets” each year was critical for the ongoing health of their church. And they did it as a team.

Most cell churches and cell groups will need to mend their nets more than once per year. In fact, teams should examine their nets every week–at a cell, coach, and pastoral level. Here’s are the questions for you: What kinds of holes are appearing in your cell net system? What do you need to mend today? Are you doing it as a team?

The Functions of Leadership Teams

mario

by Mario Vega

The cell model functions best through leadership teams at each level. First, the core of the cell is a work team. Second, the supervisors form another team at the “sector” area of the city. Next are the teams of zone pastors and then district pastors.

The functions of these leadership teams are mutual edification, evangelism and training. That is, they put into practice the priesthood of all believers. Leadership teams practice such things as: counseling, prayer for the sick, encouragment, love one to another, exhortation, and confession of sin.

On the level of the cell, the team cares for the cell members (and each other). For example, perhaps a member is going through economic difficulty. The team will try to meet that need. Perhaps a sick person needs to be visited, a mother needs help in caring for her children, or a family is in crisis. The team is aware of these problems and seeks to meet these needs.

At a higher level, the team plans the preaching during the celebration services, the counseling of more complicated situations, the implementation of strategic plans for the church, and the support for the diversity of gifts of each minister.

All of these teams work in a coordinated way. I’m not referring to “human effort” as much as functioning as the body of Christ in which each member is indispensable and accomplishes his or her role in edifying the rest of the body according to the grace given to each one by the Lord.

Las funciones de los equipos de liderazgo.

by Mario Vega
