Fulfilling God’s Relational Mission

randall

by Randall Neighbour

When I blogged for Joel last year, I shared a story of a cell member in my group who invited us to meet in her uncomfortable apartment (dirty floors and no furniture in the living area), located in a dangerous part of town, and with a roommate who constantly smoked marijuana in the next room with her boyfriend. The point I made in that blog was how important it was to meet in the home of new believers in your group so they can take ownership and minister to others in the most familiar place they know … their own home.

As I look back on the meeting in her home and the way Christ was revealed so powerfully, I can clearly see we missed a huge kingdom-extending opportunity. After two weeks of meeting there, we moved back to a more comfortable place for the group members. While I wasn’t the leader of the group, I’m now filled with regret that I didn’t impress on our group leader—who was the lead pastor of the church plant, by the way—to stay there and “tough it out” a little to see how God would continue to work in the new believer’s life and oikos.

This new believer had a dozen unsaved friends we never met. Her roommate was never befriended and reached for Christ. Her roommate’s boyfriend was never befriended and reached for Christ. We should have remained in that home until the Lord told us to move elsewhere!

I recently heard the pastor who understands “don’t move from house to house” challenge his group members and leaders with this: “God has given your group a ministry to other believers in your group and the church body, and a mission to reach the lost world all around you. Do not neglect one for the sake of the other or your group will fail.”

When I travel around the USA to train cell leaders, I know I’ll be asked, “Is it OK for us to meet in one host home that’s centrally located and comfortable for the members, or should we move the meeting around to various members’ homes?”

My answer usually introduces a new paradigm for Western cell group life: “Healthy cell life isn’t always about comfort and convenience for the existing members. It’s also about finding out where God wants you to pray, fellowship, worship, and minister and staying in that home until he tells you you’re done. If you’re always asking the Father, ‘is this the most powerful place we can meet you?’ he will tell you where you should meet for meetings and how long you should remain there.”

If your cell group leaders or members consistently ask or challenge you about the issue of cell group meeting location, you’ve got work to do. Help them see that healthy cell life is about fulfilling the relational mission to which God has called them.

Finding the Person of Peace – Part #2

michael

By Michel Sove

Luke 10:7 (NIV) “Stay in that house, eating and drinking whatever they give you, for the worker deserves his wages. Do not move around from house to house.”

Last week I introduced you to Pete, the man of peace I met as I frequented the local McDonalds. Once I established a relationship with him I continued to go to McDonalds and build on that relationship. I went there daily and one day I noticed Pete was not there and I heard he was in the local hospital.

I went to visit him in the hospital and it was there I shared the Gospel with him and at that time he said, “I don’t believe that stuff.” I was disappointed but I continued to visit him and show care for him. Soon after, he ended up in a nursing home where I continued to visit him.

I sensed he didn’t have long to live. I had the children at church sing a song on tape and dedicate it to Pete. When I played it for him he cried and was deeply touched. The next day when I came to the nursing home he was sitting on the edge of the bed and said, “I wish I could start my life over again.” I told him he could. Jesus wanted to give him a fresh start.

It was then I shared the Gospel again and he opened his life to Christ. I told him as long as I live I would tell his story. Ten days later he died and because I had built this relationship with him, his only living relatives asked if I would preach his funeral. Not only did I preach his funeral, all his friends from McDonalds were there to hear God’s story, which was now Pete’s story. It all began by asking God to guide me to a person of peace and doing what I sensed Him leading me to do. Here are some additional lessons learned:

People are not projects – Stay with them even if they initially reject the Gospel. Show them you care and that you are a friend regardless.

Pray and don’t give up – Continue to pray daily for the person and keep looking for opportunities to give a verbal witness.

Faithfulness leads to greater opportunities – As you faithfully love and serve this person of peace God will give you opportunities to share with others related to this person.

There is something about staying with a person, staying in a neighborhood. We apply this principle to our cell groups as well. We do not move from house to house but establish a presence in the neighborhood. We want to influence the neighborhood and not just one person. Start praying for eyes to see the person of peace and when God shows you, stay with them and expect great things.

House to House

jeff

by Jeff Tunnell

While I do not know what Pastor Mario Vega will write this week, it has always blessed me to hear about the spreading of cells in El Salvador.  The cell gathers in a neighborhood home, sings worship and shares the word so openly that the family next door to, or behind the host home sees and hears what is going on.  Out of curiosity they respond to an invitation to attend and in a short time accept Christ.  As the cell has now increased in size a new host is needed, so the cell multiplies to the house next door, or behind, and so multiplication continues from house to house, block to block.

Households are converted to Christ and the base of the ministry can be traced back to that first host home where it all began.  This is a powerful strategy and method that continues regularly.  Thank you Pastor Mario for sharing your ministry with all of us who read the JCG blog!  I realize that not all of our countries have the same situation as El Salvador, however, the principle is the same; start with the man of peace, work out of that home first, and allow the gospel to penetrate the area surrounding the home.  Your multiplication may not be adjacent to the first home, but it will be from one oikos group to the next.

Friends, please tell your fellow cell leaders how to sign up for this FREE ministry blog.  Thank you for spreading the news, as Joel Comiskey Group continues to resource the worldwide cell movement.

Jesus and the Children

daphne

by Daphne Kirk

www.Gnation2gnation.com

Jesus knew we needed the children, just as they need us. They are our role models (Matthew 18: 3-4). He said the Father takes pleasure in revealing things to them that are hidden from the “wise and learned” (Matthew 11:25) and that they can “silence the foe and avenger” ( Matthew 21). It might take humility, but can we do without these attributes in our cells?

Jesus had very strong words to say about a wrong attitude toward children. I call this a hidden sin as I have never been in a church where people are brought to repentance for inappropriate words, attitudes, and dismissiveness to a child. Yet Jesus said, “If anyone causes one of these little ones who believes in Me to sin it is better for a millstone to be hung around his neck and cast into the sea.” Very strong language!

He went even further saying, “whoever welcomes a child like this welcomes Me.” The implications are far reaching and, in my opinion, rarely considered for it could be said that if we turn away a child, we turn away Jesus. He rebuked those who turned children away from His presence (Matthew 19:13 ). Yet they are turned away from our cells or left playing games and watching videos instead of being welcomed where “Christ is the Center.” If Jesus is at the center, how can we not bring them to His presence?

There are many indications that the disciples were teenagers, since only Jesus and Peter paid taxes (Matthew 17:25). Jesus was the ultimate youth leader, investing His life in the emerging generation. He turned the world upside down by investing in a wild bunch. He believed in them, had vision for them, and worked through the problems they presented instead of tiring of their company. There is a generation of teenagers who need the same, to be present with a generation of fathers who believe in them. Jesus showed us how by sharing life with them. They could be called His cell.

Jesus was moved by the heart cry of parents (Mark 5:22 and Luke 7) and never removed children from the arms of parents. Jairus was present when his daughter was restored to him, the widow was there to take her resurrected son home. He honored and took care of His mother even with His dying breaths. Jesus believed in family. He still does. Surely cells include family just like Jesus did.

If we love Him – we will follow Him. The emerging generation are ours by Sovereign command to be part of our lives, honored in the context of family and included in our cells for their sake, for our sake but most of all for Jesus sake!

Jesús y los niños

Por Daphne Kirk

www.Gnation2gnation.com

Messengers of Peace

mario

by Mario Vega

It doesn’t take long before a cell leader finds people in the cell who pretend to be clever. I’m referring to the type of people who ask questions such as: “Who was Cain’s wife?” “Did Noah get polar bears into the ark?” And so on. The leader will soon learn that these people are not really looking for answers. Rather, they might want to show off their knowledge or raise doubts in others.

Martin Luther made use of irony to answer these types of questions. Once a skeptic asked him: “What did God do before creating the world?” Luther replied: “Surely he was creating a hell for people who ask nonsensical questions like that.”

Not surprisingly Luther was called “The Lion of Wittenberg.” But it is not necessary for leaders to become lions like Luther. Just remember that Jesus was tested with many such questions. He knew how to respond wisely to each one of those questions, often asking another question in reply. Leaders, as children of peace, must know how to wait on the Lord to avoid falling into the trap of the enemy and always leave a message of peace and reconciliation that leads unbelievers to faith in Christ.
